If you don't have a bear hide in front of your power cage, what are you even doing with your life?

Hide off last night and in the freezer. Fur is very nice. Will scrape and finish it in a few weeks. I am going to tan this myself I think.

Got 4.5 gallons of fat off it. HTC bear.. Might give it to friends of mine who make it into lard, or make lard myself. Makes the best pie crusts and pastries. Far better than pork lard.

Butchering and into the freezer tonight.

inb4 dusty shop. It also functions as a wood shop.

Sorry for this dumb question, but what species of bear is it?

Is there any parasite danger in utilizing the lard like there is with the meat?

Black bear.

Lard needs to be rendered from fat, meaning you basically cook it and skim off what turns liquid. All parasites are will be killed during the rendering process.

Trichinosis cysts are in the animals muscle and are surrounded by calcium deposits protecting them until something eats the meat, so I don't think they occur in fat.

Freezing kills most types of trichinosis, but not all. Cooking it through just like pork is the safest bet.

Thanks for responding. 6 feet seemed really big for a black bear, but I'm on the east coast and black bears here are cuddly like dogs.

Also, I know fuk all!

Huge head. So bears in trap, presumably moving around. You just line up a shot with a pistol and pop it in the head?

In Ontario trappers are the only non law enforcement citizens legally allowed to carry side arms in public. I generally don't however. A long gun is more useful to me all around

I don't like to rile them all up, so a scoped .22 magnum from about 30 yards does the job instantly. A bear doesn't fight the snare hard until people walk up. While there is no damage, no sense in walking right up to it and making it go bananas.

Long way from grizz country. Not sure but I think polar bears might be the next closest up north. I played around in the arctic but didn't see any of those fellas

Thanks brah! I have been considering trying for another bear, but bow season might get in the way. Fishing is getting good too, so might be time to catch some fish before it freezes.

never will hunt, but i respect your position more than most actual hunters. If an animal threatened my life, i would kill it too. I wouldn't make a floormat out of it though lol. although like you said, if you had a way to relocate it that would have been preferable.

that guy doesn't even live there full time though, it's just a leisure summer getaway out in "nature" for some rich dude right? It would be one thing if it was his permanent residence. btw, i'm not really blaming you for doing your job.
