Now that I am going to(hopefully if they dont suck) be posting videos, dealing with negative comments has crossed my mind.

While I like speaking to people with all kinds of opinions and views, I am thinking of taking a Rogan type approach with those who are just trying to flame or troll, and just ignoring them.

Its a fine line though, because I don't mind discussing things with most people and i dont think all opposing views are necessarily a "negative" comment.

I don’t know how it didn’t click until just now that bears should logically be covered in fat. They can pack on enough to survive a whole winter of hibernation but I definitely wasn’t expecting THAT much uniform coverage.

Ya, this one had a solid five gallons of fat on him. 3500 cals per lb. Just like a big ol fuel tank that they wear.

Oh yeah can't give trolls attention, that's all they do it for.

You give them attention and that attracts trolls too because they see that you're easy to get attention from.

What bugs me is why don't they just make their own platform?

No instead they'll be morons and go onto the platform you spent time building, to try and divert attention from you onto them.

It's super weird to think about, but doable. It's the only tanning technique I know of that makes the leather breathable tho.

Pretty interesting if you can get past the brain factor.

Have rendered some into lard, but gave that stuff away.

It certainly used to be, and some countries are stuck in the dark ages when it comes to methods and regulations.

The new methods and regulations here anyway make it way better. No more toothed traps and ineffective kill style traps.

In fact the new foot hold traps are used by biologists to study animals because the animal is able to be released unharmed.

We use mostly a different style trap that renders the animal unconscious in under 120 seconds. Most of the time it's much faster.

In this post, I aware you of what smelt are.

Smelt are small, silvery fish that live in deep, cold water lakes. They are basically a food source for lake trout, rainbow trout and other fish.

Each spring they spawn (lay eggs) in fast moving rivers and large streams for about a week. They arrive by the hundreds of thousands, and in some rivers, millions. They only run up river at night. I take a dip net and catch them as they swim up river. Traditionally, dipping for smelt was a social activity. In years past people would fill pickup truck beds with them. When they were in great abundance they were even used as fertilizer.

After catching them I use scissors to trim off the heads, and gut them. They are fried and eaten whole (minus heads and guts), as the bones dissolve somewhat. They are basically delicious protein filled french fries when battered and fried at 400 degrees for a minute and a half. Cleaning each one takes about ten seconds.

I never catch more than a few gallons at a time because cleaning any more than that takes forever. The ones pictured are from last spring, and were frozen. Trying to clean the freezer out so I can catch more in a month or so.


If you ever get a chance to try smelt, do it! fun to catch, and delicious!

Smelts are awesome. Fried smelts are an Italian Christmas tradition, especially for Italians from the Calabria region (which my Grandmother's family is from).

I think it's partly because of the fat content. When outside in the winter some winter camping friends who haul gear and work in the cold all day have been known to eat butter sticks rolled in brown sugar to get extra cals in.

I prefer chocolate covered almonds
