I've recently started tutoring 1st year architecture students and it's been a learning curve on how to give feedback on peoples work. Say the wrong thing and they'll just implode / start to cry

Personally with $300 I wouldn't bother, saving up a little extra and having a budget of ~$500 you could get quite a decent entry level camera + lens. (Nikon D3400)
My first camera was a Lumix G2, god what a terrible camera.

Picked up my first xplor last night. Will be modifying the mounting plates to fit my PB reflectors, and, hopefully, experimenting with HSS portraiture on Sunday. fingers crossed.

So as LieutenantGains and I were in Chicago, I created an Instagram account called TheNectarCentral…
Basically I am going to repost the trendy film wannabe photos and troll. It will be all fun and if you could all give it a follow, that would be much appreciated.

Hey Misc bros. So theres a look im trying to go for. Backlit using the sun, fill flash in front. Tried it out today and it looks alright. Its a look where the highlights are intentionally pushed or overexposed.
inspired from this shot
http://assets.teenvogue.com/photos/5...kowska-cov.jpg
for my shot I metered for the shadows, adjusted my flash to that meter reading. I think I also turned it down a stop because i didnt want it to look "overlit" or to flashy in the face. I also feathered my softbox across the face for a softer light. I am trying to find a formula how to do this look so I can reproduce it no matter the situation I am in.
Also did a shot of a friend balancing ******t light (yellow hallway light) with flash. Slow shutter, low aperture, Higher ISO and tripod. Finding perfect balance.

At this point its a good idea to do more research and decide on what type of photography you like. After that, look into camera body/type/manufacturer/etc.
If you do a little planning now, it will help you better expand your equipment while minimizing the expense later. That doesn't mean you have to limit yourself (the sky is the limit), just that you have something in mind once you make your purchase.
You can also offer to help a photographer (friend, family member, etc.) in exchange for some knowledge. That's a great way to determine if you even like photography before you spend any of your hard earned cash on it.
Just be reliable, show up on time and don't make any promises you can't keep. Having a good reputation from the start can help you a lot should you decide to move forward with more advanced and/or paid work.

What im hoping for is an A9R that blows the D810 (and its still unannounced successor) out of the water and a few more solid landscapes lenses and Ill make the jump to Sony.
If nothing else this will light a fire up Canon and Nikon ass's to start innovating and producing a lineup that makes sense.

Had a good time today but I'm a hardcore noob, 90% of my pics today were unrecoverable due to being overexposed.

With landscapes you typically want everything in the shot to be in focus from front to back and that requires stopping down. Unlike the old days you have live view now to make it easy or just take a few test shots experimenting with focus and then examine them.
Sometimes you'll need to experiment with camera height to avoid focus issues where you simply don't have enough depth of field. Some people will say "use a wider lens" but it's a myth that wider lenses have more DOF โ they simply magnify the subject less. If you enlarge to the same size areas out of focus will look the same.
Another thing that can help with waterfall shots is an ND filter. You might find after you stop down in overcast conditions you're still at 1/30 or faster and it doesn't produce the look you want with the moving water. That's where an ND filter helps. How many stops depends on how fast the water is moving. I typically only use a 3 stop.

Thanks I appreciate the tips. I'll definitely go back under different conditions.
And the DoF something I edited in Lightroom, I watched a vid where Chelsea Northrup did something similar on a waterfall pic and I was interested in trying it out. The raw image is all in focus like you said.

Actually I really like it when it's taken a step further with the "bokeh pano" technique to simulate a much larger format as if it was shot with an extremely fast wide lens (that physically doesn't exist). Here's an example with a link back to the photographer. Shot with an 85mm lens on a DSLR.
