On the contrary, there are many levels of photography, including those that do it only for fun.

While true I just go out of my way to avoid being associated with 90% of people who buy a Canon Rebel and call themselves a photographer, letting people know to message them for rates.

Had an issue shooting last weekend that I'm trying to figure out what was causing it. Again, most of my shooting is indoor volleyball this time of year, so as you can imagine, the lighting sucks.

In a string a shots, one photo would be washed out with really bad color, and the next would be a lot warmer with good color. This is all .jpg shots and continuous shooting.
Nikon D500
Nikon 70-200 vrii

Examples: Washed out: http://imgur.com/cZ47eac

Next shot in string: http://imgur.com/qSDgA6V

I tried playing with the lighting set ups in the menu, but still got the same results.

Any ideas?

White balance set to auto? My AWB typically does a good job.
2) Dial in the color temperature (if you know it)
3) Set manual WB
4) Shoot RAW

Yes, WB set to auto. I mostly shoot in "S" (shutter priority), set the shutter speed and let the camera do the rest.

I do shoot RAW + .jpg. I like to share quickly so I'll download the .jpg to my phone and text to parents on sight. They like to share on social media in the moment kind of thing so those images will be right out of camera. If there's a shot that's great, I will use the RAW file when I get home.

In that case, you need to do a controlled lighting test for defects in the camera. Also, go to your camera's forum and see if anyone else has experience this issue. That's all I got.

It was kinda funny. On day 2, another dad that shoots a canon T3, was having the same issue and asked me about it. I just said that I noticed it too and had no idea why it was happening.

So, that lead me back to the lighting thing. But, this was in a convention center (Reno), so the lighting appeared to be the good old metal halide warehouse lights. If they had upgraded to LED, would that have affected the shots?

If nothing else this will light a fire up Canon and Nikon ass's to start innovating and producing a lineup that makes sense.
Just fkin LOL at the A9. You can't use a spec sheet.

The electronic shutter has banding problems with lighting that will be at nighttime and indoor sporting events.

How about that buffer clear speed?

How much do Sony's telephoto lenses cost?

I do agree that Canon and Nikon need to step up their game. Unfortunately, I think Fuji is going to end up merking Nikon. The KeyMission cameras are terrible and it's the type of mistake that puts companies out of business. Canon will be able to stay in the high end camera market because of their cinema cameras and cine lenses. If Canon ever needed the money they could release another "5D mark II."

Random reps to posters with good pics and info, you're welcome =)

So I started taking a bit of pics on my Huawei P9 Plus phone, but it's a phone. Pictures are chit compared to a camera.

My GF has an older Canon camera with lenses etc, but is rather old and pics are getting a bit grainy (were talking 8 years ish).

I've done some research myself, but it's a labyrinth for a newbie, especially considering bodies, lenses etc etc.

What are some good choices around 500$? In terms of quality and usability. Mostly thinking selftimer pics as well as random architecture pictures, a bit like Watts ITT (pleasure to see your IG and how it has evolved bro)

Maybe true for the other parts, but not true on this point. The 5D was not due to planning but an anomaly that caught everyone by surprise…including Canon. It's huge popularity are the result of its cinema use and capabilities not its DSLR intent.

Now that the jig is up (and competing manufacturer have joined the game), its not something they would invest in (they really never did), especially now that they have expanded their cinema line.

Is flicker reduction on?

Indoor lighting is always going to be a PITA but that should improve things.

That may do it right there. I remember seeing the "flicker" indicator in the viewfinder, and thinking it was enabled. However, that link says that the flicker indicator blinks when disabled, and I'm pretty sure it was blinking at me. I'll see where it's set when I get home, but I'm pretty sure that's the issue.

hey brahs, apologies if its rude for me to just come in and ask questions but i was hoping you guys could help me out.

pretty interested to getting into photography, absolutely 0 skills and experience. i have been googling but all these opinions everywhere has got me so confused.

What are the top picks of camera and lenses for an absolute beginner to start out with? (i'm still a student with limited budget that is trying to save up)
Is photoshop the best application i should familiarise myself with as a beginner?
What are some reputable webs that have tutorials or guides for beginners to start out with? (I do not mind paying if it is actually helpful)

Thanks in advance brahs.
The world would be a better place if everyone would channel their frustration and anger to better themselves and be nicer to everyone they meet. Everyone has their own fights and stories to tell, you are not more important than another.

- note to self, lessons from 2016.

No one cares if you ask questions, as long as its on topic.

Too many variables to answer this question. Right now its like asking what's a good car? Unless you list your preferences, you'd get answers from minivans to sports cars. You need to do some research first so your answers can be more informed.

For example, you can start by stating what type of photography you're interested in. That can automatically give others some idea of the kind of camera you need to accomplish the task.

If all else fails, you can start with your budget. Just don't forget to include batteries and other peripheral equipment you may need.
Is photoshop the best application i should familiarise myself with as a beginner?
What's great is subjective. But PS is a great tool (if you don't mind paying) for photos and much, much, more.

Lynda.com. But there are a wealthy of free tutorials online that are nearly just as good. They're just no as easily organized.

A $3,300 5D mk iv with the ability to externally record a 4k flat picture profile would destroy the sales of the $13,000 Canon EOS C300 Mark II and $28,000 Canon EOS C700.

The 5D mk ii cannibalized sales of more expensive pro camcorders Canon was selling. Canon has no interest in ever releasing another DSLR that can in any way compete with the more expensive bodies they sell. Canon wants money. The motion JPEG codec has to be transcoded due to the ridiculous file sizes. LOL workflow. That was done on purpose to force people to spend money on higher end camera bodies.

I'm not a Camera Guru like some in this thread, I use a Nikon D7100, and several lenses. What really fed my passion for photography was a Nikon P510 which is just a compact camera, so there is no separate lens, I like their P series because of the magnification, the quality drops the more you zoom in, but I found the quality excellent for standard photo sizes and ********, no need to spend a thousand dollars when you're just getting into things. Their current P series is P900 which looks like a solid choice to me. Maybe look into getting last years model, should be able to pick one up for less than 500 maybe 3-400 bucks, and get plenty of use out of it.

Great Car, nice picture of the car, poor background. Maybe darken/fade the outer edge?

Look at the histogram to get an idea. Usually unless there are huge spikes at the end you can recover most details if you shoot raw.

Having two bodies either on some kind of dual camera harness or with one slung back over the shoulder with the vertical grip at your hip for quick access gives you the best chance of covering the fast paced stuff.

It's also worth mentioning that even though today's sensors offer resolution that is overkill for most of the wedding coverage giving you a lot more freedom to crop, in a church for example you'll often be shooting in crappy light without flash or off-camera lighting and at higher ISO cropping will reveal more noise so it's best to use the right lens for the job.
For me I've never had an issue with memory card failure but I have had a few times where I forgot my memory card in my laptop. Go drive 2 hours to take pictures and am stuck. I keep a couple memory cards in my vehicle now.
