Whoa, I just came across this thread I think I am going to like this…
I'm a Sony shooter, hopefully that's OK around here (lol) A7Rii here I like to shoot photos and videos but haven't really done much with video yet… I haven't been on the forums in a long time but I used to love it here, I am sure I will be able to waste all sorts of time now that I found this thread though.
Here's some outdated and limited selection of photos before I start finding ones to post here or there: https://500px.com/pooshda … I have profiles on most photo sites I just don't update enough.
Here's some random black & whites from Michigan Peace Festival 2016 I just had around.

Is the forum broken, seems like no one's IMG tag images are showing up, I posted 5 and they show up fine in preview but now they're just broken links it seems.

Question for you photography bros.
How did you learn? On your own? Classes?
For someone looking to learn photography as a hobby what do you recommend the best way to go about it? Thanks all
The only use for a degree is if you prefer to teach or became a critic. Otherwise, your portfolio speaks for itself and trumps all. Photography is one of the few professions left where talent and creativity far overshadows an education.

Don't rush into buying any gear. What type of traveling are you going to be doing? What are you going to want to photograph?
I would never buy a D5500. A used D7000 or D7100 offer far greater value as they have screw drives and AI/AIS indexing tabs. This means that you would get auto focus on D series lenses and get metering information from AI/AIS lenses.
I'd rather have a Fuji XT-1 than a Sony A6000. Fuji is the king of jpegs, if you're not interested in post processing.
If you're doing travel where weight is an issue, don't overlook micro 4/3 cameras from Panasonic and Olympus.

@Dominik, what are your thoughts on the new 28mm Nikon just announced?
I always wanted the 24 1.4 for night photography (24mm is my favorite focal length for landscapes) but in the end decided it would be 24mm overkill since I already had the 24 PC-E and 24-70.
Given how much resolution we have these days I'd probably still opt for the 24 over the 28. I mean if you have the 28 and suddenly need a little more FOV in a single frame you'll wish you had the 24. As a wider portrait lens the 35 1.4 seems like a better choice than 28. 1.2x crop mode with 24 is like a 28 @ f/1.8 and you get 25mp files on a D800/D810. Only issue is in low light where you'll see more noise cropping with 24 vs. 28. Other than that I'd still go 24.

Stand there and visualize the kind of shot you want to take, think about composition, study the light, etc. It's easy for beginners to get into the spray and pray habit and hope by shooting a metric f-ton of stuff you'll hit the jackpot.

Has anyone got a good travel tripod to reccomend? My carbon manfrotto took quite a battering in China I'm not quite sure if that was due to its quality or my lack of care for it (lol) so looking to replace

Does anyone in here enjoy shooting video as well? I was originally more into video than photography until I got my latest camera… I feel like I've leaned more toward photography but still enjoy shooting some video since it does so well with it. I've shot a lot just haven't really edited anything together yet (something I used to love doing) I even had this "2 Hour Cinematic Recap" of Breaking Bad tearing up YouTube a few years back until it got removed, I miss editing videos like that but it's too hard to keep them up that it's just a waste of time these days.
If anyone likes editing video post up some edits, I haven't gone through this thread yet maybe it's been done.

My only comment would be to take out the time to edit out tiny details such as the dots of white around the central figure, it just leads your eye off where you don't want it to in the image. Sounds like a pretty anal comment I know but (for me) it just lifts the image.

Little cameras are better for street photography. Small cameras draw less attention and are easier to carry around. This is where mirrorless DX cameras do well. For example, the Fuji X100S, is a great camera for street photography. The 23mm lens is a 35mm equivalent. Plus it's small so you'd never have a second thought about taking it with you.
The D5500 crosses the line on what's annoying to carry around. The size/weight is going to be a deterrent for casual shooting. You're not going to want to carry that camera around to shoot a few shots during your day to day activities. You'll do more photography with a smaller camera.

I've been putting together a cheap desktop to try DaVinci Resolve 14 in Linux. I'm waiting for a SSD to show up and then I should be good to go. I have no interest in ever using Windows 10, so I'm going to checkout what Linux has to offer.
I'm hoping I get the added bonus of being able to dump Adobe. I'm not getting $50 worth of value per month. Premiere Pro is a bug ridden pile of crap. Photoshop and Lightroom have reached a point where there aren't any updates that will ever add any additional functionality. My experience has been the updates just break stuff. I had to downgrade Premiere Pro after the last update because all my exports were filled with dropped frames.

I would return the D5500. Spend a week or two learning about what you actually want to do. The people that rush into purchases are the ones that end up selling their barely used gear a couple years later for significantly less than they paid for it.
Considerable amounts of money can be saved by being patient. If you don't have an unlimited budget, money saved can go to boring essential gear. Do you need a tripod? Ball/video/gear heads? A gimbal? Filters? Bags? More lenses? Audio equipment? Lighting? Diffusers/reflectors? Extra batteries? Rechargeable AA/AAAs? Extra memory cards? Hotel room, campground fees, gas money, event tickets? Books?
Video requires additional considerations when compared to photography. System hardware requirements for editing video are higher than photos. If your system sucks for editing video, you're not going to want to edit video. Depending on what you're trying to produce, you'll spend more time editing than shooting.
The next thing to keep in mind is that audio ranges from extremely important to more important than video. It isn't difficult to meet the requirements for acceptable audio, but it does cost money. The integrated mic in a camera isn't going to cut it.
Finally, what program(s) are you going to use to edit video? Are you willing to put in the time required to learn how to use it?

I agree… a camera is a camera, they all function in the same basic ways (with the exception of not having a mirror in a mirrorless) if you can use one digital camera very well you can use them all once you find your way around the controls and their subtle differences. Your main focus should be on quality glass, that's a very important place to put your thought and money, you could have the highest tech body and have budget glass on it and your photos will only be as good as that glass can deliver to the sensor. This is not to say that you need to spend a fortune on lenses either but you do get what you pay for, I've actually had luck with some vintage lenses pre-digital era on my A7Rii using a $15 lens adapter (obviously it only allows manual focusing). In the long run lenses end up costing quite a bit more than the body itself, my body wasn't cheap but I've surpassed it's cost on lenses and I have a long ways to go.

I'm most interested in the fast wide angle for the wedding and concert work; something to think about.

I also really enjoy shooting my doggos… maybe later I'll dig up some macro shots, creepy crawlies make awesome subjects too.
This one below was shot with an 1980's Minolta AF50 1.7 lens, works quite nicely on my modern body.

Thoughts on hanging your own prints in your home? I'd prefer to only hang pictures that I took, rather than hanging pictures other people have taken. Don't really give a **** about what other people think but curious how many miscers do the same? Or is it pretentious to hang your own work?

I would absolutely have some of my stuff hanging in my house if I could afford it, I could always just get paper prints and a cheap frame but that still costs quite a bit of money to my broke ass lol.
I have always been interesting and trying to sell items like this at "Art In The Park" type art fairs that happen throughout the year where I live but I worry I'd invest a bunch on prints and no one would buy any of them, especially expensive ones like metal/acrylic, if miraculously they did sell I'd love doing that though.
