My father was a pro photographer and he passed away a few weeks ago, I was able to keep his personal camera that he would just take on fam trips and not use for work. It's a FujiFilm x100 and I have no clue how to use it fully. Yes I can point and shoot but that's about all I know. Are there any good websites or videos on how to use different cameras for different shots? I tried YouTube but it's all just camera reviews or blogs. I guess this really isn't a beginners camera and most people who buy it already know the basics of how to shoot properly.

If its an old/vintage camera look for the genre or general area rather than the specific unit. There are videos and sites devoted totally to specific types of cameras and/or formats, i.e. film only cameras. Also, link the camera.

Perfect! That's what the camera was designed to do. It's best suited for travel, street, and candid photography. All things that would be done with a family. The small size makes it easy to always have. The camera line is popular with street photographers.

The notable design choices of the camera are that it is a range finder styled camera (rather than SLR), has a fixed equivalent focal length of 35mm (no zooming), and has a leaf shutter. The leaf shutter is the most interesting thing because it allows the shutter to sync at any speed with any flash. Did your father have a flash he used with the camera?

Download the manual from Fuji, so you have it as a reference for understanding certain settings/functions.

Fuji is know for their great jpeg output. One of the reasons for this is the film simulation picture profiles that are available in the camera. This is something I would suggest looking into. I would also check to see what file type the camera is set to record and pick fine jpeg so you don't end up with massive RAW files you don't know how to deal with.

Next, figure out how to select 'auto ISO' and 'aperture priority.' Aperture priority will change settings based on the aperture of the lens. An overly simplistic explanation of what the aperture does is to control the 'depth of field.' A wide aperture (low number) will give a smaller depth of field, meaning things out of focus will be blurry. Obviously, there is more to it than that. Watching some videos about aperture, depth of field, and aperture priority will expose you to some fundamentals. With the basic understanding of a few concepts, you'll be able to figure out what you want to learn next.

As for books, maybe Michael Freeman's Photo School Fundamentals? It really depends on how much and what you want to learn.

Was in between going with the sigma 10-20 f/3.8

(Currently was using a canon 10-18mm for my vlogging rig and needed to upgrade)

Just got in my new glass today!

Canon 10-22mm f/3.5 wide angle!

Hoping for some quality increases!

My condolences.

Well first of all (as you already noticed) the x100 is a fixed lens camera so you won't have to spend more money on lenses (Yours is a 35mm equivalent). Using it is actually very simple. You control the aperture on the lens (from f/2.0 to f/16) and the shutter speed with the dial on top of the camera. If you leave your lens on "A" but choose your speed that means you are shooting in "shutter priority" mode. If you leave the shutter dial on "A" but chhose the aperture on the ring then you are shooting on "aperture priority" mode. If you choose your shutter and apperture then you are shooting in manual mode. If you want to just point and shoot then leave both on "A". If you want to use the OVF instead of the EVF then just pull the lever on the front of the camera.
Fuji has some pretty amazing jpegs (the original x100 more so than most of the newer cameras). I suggest you play with the film simulations to see which one you like best and with which parameters.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Not sure what I am doing with my beginner set up misc (Nikon D3300 with 35mm 1.8) but I am doing my best to learn portrait photography on my Aperture priority setting (for now). Minimal editing, because I am struggling with an old version of photoshop with 0 tutorial videos out there.

You can do everything right technically and someone might still not like the photo. Some people just hate the way they look and the more tightly you frame them with a portrait the less they will like it.

Experiment with camera position and perspective. You'll notice a lot of people taking selfies which they're happy with will usually position their phone above their eyes and shoot down at an angle. Sometimes the trick is to get your subject to sit down somewhere with nice light so you can shoot from a higher position.

And if you're stuck with dud backgrounds (ugly, distracting, people, etc.) using a longer lens gives you more freedom there. Cliff Mautner is one of my favorite wedding photographers. Watch how he takes harsh light and positions his subject against a darker background with the sun behind them and gets professional looking results.

Getting back to your image, the first thing I noticed is her dark hair kind of gets lost in the dark leaves. That's where using the sun as a backlight or rim light can work well to create some tonal separation (like the video above shows). If you can't work with the sun to get the composition you want then a CTO gelled flash coming in at a similar angle to simulate sunlight can work well.

Don't use white, its too difficult to deal with. Also, the composition: I can't tell what she's doing with her hand? Lots of detail lost in the shadows.

I'm leaning towards 11x17 size roughly, of gator-board type work, so no need for a frame as they get expensive and are usually ugly, would also make cycling through a handful of prints every few months easy. Have thought about canvas or metal but not everything printed on them looks nice, also a good deal more expensive.

You do alot of pictures with that girl, photos are nice, but something about her just looks goofy to me. Seems like the difference between a normal girl and a 'model' is confidence and a good photographer.

Anyone use an action camera like a go-pro or a knockoff version? Have thought about getting one, but go-pros are pretty expensive for something I wouldn't use all that often. A friend and I did a climb of sawtooth ridge in Colorado, and the go-pro footage turned out awesome, figure it'd be rare to really utilize something like that, but for kayaking or any other water based hobby it would be preferred over an actual large bulky and not waterproof camera.

For prints on the wall the best look and cost are prints mounted on Foamalite PVC (with no lamination). Then hang them slightly offset from the wall art gallery style which makes them really jump off the wall due to the drop shadow you get. Framed prints looked dated and crappy.

I wouldn't mind but don't have any since I'd rather have stuff on the wall by better photogs than me lol. It does depend on what it is though, I have heard comments from non-photogs about photogs that have pics of random women they have photographed on the wall and though it was weird (and kinda is tbh).

With a bit of patience, You can get a Samsung HMX-W200 or HMX-W300 off of eBay for less than $30 or $40. They're rated for up to 3 meters of water, shoot 1080p, and are a bit larger than a cell phone. You won't have access to all the Go-Pro mounts, but they would be easier to carry in a pocket. Just make sure to check how well the battery holds a charge as they are a few years old.

Another option is to buy a Hero2 or Hero3 off of eBay. They'll shoot 1080p. You can find listings with extra batteries and accessories for less than $100 or $130.

The secret for eBay is to bid on auctions and to be patient. Browse the completed listing to get an idea of what's the bottom of the market. Once you know that, bid accordingly and expect to spend a couple weeks losing auctions until you finally win one at a good price.

Keep any original packaging, paperwork, and unwanted accessories around. I would even suggest keeping the box it was shipped to you in to save your futureself the time to replace it. Having those things will help you get a higher price when you decide to sell the camera.

Best time to sell is in November/December as prices will slightly rise. Best time to upgrade to a newer, but still used piece of gear is January/February.

I don't have a specific recommendation off hand but that's a nice budget, you'll have a lot of good options with that much to spend… I usually look at Manfrotto stuff but I most recently bought a Sirui monopod w/ fold out 3 legged base that I like a lot, actually bought it for use with my gimbal so It would have feet and could be sat down but I'm impressed with the quality so I'd imagine they have some nice tripods as well… with $350 you'll definitely have no issues finding a nice one though.

Anyone on here try selling prints of their work (not necessarily client work, just general photos) I sold a few prints I shot of some kids on Smugmug so it finally provoked me to buy a years subscription and now I have the itch to try selling "fine art" prints and curious if anyone else has had any luck, I think the main trick would just be getting traffic to my albums or specific photos I think have a chance at selling which is a whole issue in itself. I wasn't necessarily set on Smugmug but since someone ordered $150 worth of prints through that trial I was running I had no choice if I wanted to get paid for it lol.

I was hoping this thread would be a little more active too, I enjoy seeing people post photos… don't be shy, or maybe I just caught it way too late lol.

It is very oversaturated and most people will never find your work in the first place. The trick is to stick to local interest shots, they sell to people.

I'm planning on selling at Art Fairs like Art In The Park where I live but when I mention Smugmug I mean I'd sell through a website or a place that has views… not just hope people stumble upon them, it's worked well selling to clients I shot which has doubled my money from one shot and I didn't expect that. If I had any particular pieces I really thought had a chance to sell I would try paid advertising on them and posting them in places where I have a stronger social media presence not just hope they get discovered on their own. I do think the local galleries/art fairs would be my best bet like you said, was just curious if anyone had any luck yet but while putting forth effort not just hoping someone stumbled upon them.

Here's an album I shot yesterday at a Euro car meet where I live called "Euro Hangar" it was the 6th year but first I actually bothered to go… Not totally my thing but there were some decent cars there, I got one of my favorite shots of a buddy's Aventador too but are going to do a full shoot next week that I'm really looking forward to.

Hopefully a few of these will show up, I don't feel like the IMG tags are going to work well directly through ********.

I would have like to have seen a bit more illumination on the eyes, but still nice. I really need to do more with flash myself. That said, also would appreciate camera/flash setting, time of day and angle of flash. Did you use a diffuser?

I used a photek softlighter 46 inch softbox with diffusion cover on the front. I had my friend hold it on a light stand and angle it in a way that the sun was sort of coming in to give it a natural polish. The flash power was probably a stop below the natural light (aperture I had in my camera). Time of day was during Sunset. She had a nice orange/yellow glow on her face but the sun was dropping fast. So i had to adjust the power of my flash to compensate without blowing out the beautiful glow I was getting. I was shooting at f9 1/100 ISO 100. So the power of the flash itself was probably a stop or 2 below f9. Hope that somewhat helps.
