Even though the NFA is unconstitutional, at least it's an actual law passed the way it's supposed to be

Unforutnaly I'll be there again this year.

It's not all you think it is based on the YouTube videos you see…

90% of attendees are neckbeards who are only there to fondle guns they'll never buy and collect free t shirts, stickers, patches, etc. None of which is the reason SHOT exists.

That sucks. Is it still a good place to check out new and innovated products? Do vendors run specials there? I'd have no problem buying directly from vendors or manufacturers if that was the case. I've only been shooting for a little over a year, I always *need* more stuff.

What are recommended hollow point rounds for 5.56? Federal and horny- I mean Hornady still good brands to buy that caliber?

Yes, the show is intended to display manufacturers latest/future offerings to the industry. You can't buy anything then and there. Some manufacturers do run show specials, but they involve putting in PO's, etc. Not buying one's and two's.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on stockpiled/On hand for ammo.

1k rounds per caliber ? (Range:work ratio?)
1k rounds per firearm? (regardless of caliber)

More…or less?

This would apply to your more common calibers ie 9mm, 556, 300blk etc. the more exotics wouldn’t really apply

I'm currently buying all the 9mm and 223/55.6 more 55.6 I can get per pay check before prices go up again if they do or ammo gets sold out.

Academy has a deal where you get 15% off if you get their credit card and buy ammo with that. Equals to more or less to cheaper ammo bought on line.

Just my opinion…

Set yourself the goal of buying a case of your preferred go-to rifle caliber, and pistol caliber, at regular intervals so you can dollar cost average over time. It should be frequent enough that you're stashing more than you're blasting, and you should be shooting pretty frequently (every 2 weeks at a minimum in addition to dry fire).

The truth is, you have no idea when the rug is going to get pulled out from under us with respect to buying ammunition easily, online, for reasonable prices.

2 weeks? I go once a month and dry fire.

That ammo and range time isn't cheap fam. Adds up over time if you're blasting 100-200 rounds per range session.

Personally I'll be stocking 1k rounds of .45 and 5.56 for FMJ, while rotating them out with fresh stuff when I shoot. Probably 300 rounds of soft/hollow points for each caliber that'll be stored with silica packets save for what I EDC or have in my home defense gun.

Per caliber is a useless measure because who knows how many calibers a person has or what they use them for.

Per firearm is extra useless for the reason above.

Duration of time the ammo will last you under normal use is IMO the only real way to measure. Like, "1 year supply of normal shooting, 2 years of restricting round counts"

Now, 'per firearm' is a little useful, a person who owns 15 handguns and 10 rifles should have more ammo than a person who owns 2 handguns and 1 rifle, just because it would be way out of balance and because a person who can only afford so much can only afford so much.

The guy way out on the edge who is barely a gun owner and has a handgun for home defense and a carry permit so they can have it in their car or however people do that, and goes to the range once every 3-4 months, having 1k rounds is pretty good. The guy with a dozen handguns who goes to the range twice a month or more and competes occasionally should probably have like 5-10k

Assuming practical applications and making up arbitrary numbers IMO everybody should have at least 1k FMJ and 200 JHP of their primary semi auto pistol cartridge (9mm) and at least 500 for their primary carbine cartridge (5.56 whatever)

Around 10k defensive rounds per caliber, around 5k training rounds, reload supplies for around 20k more.

As to be expected numbers are all over the map lol.

Can ammo go bad…what’s the best way to preserve when stashing away? Couple Silica packs in metal ammo box?

I’m just trying to gauge in case of “funny things” that could happen or SHTF.

I was thinking at min:

-1k topping off when needed to keep at this level of defensive ammo (1k 9m and 1k 556/300blk).

- 500 range ammo of each topping off when needed to keep at this level.

If more disposable income:

-Bump defensive rounds to 5k for each 9mm and 556/300blk (same top off philosophy as above)
- bump range ammo to 1k for each 9mm and 556/300blk (same top off philosophy as above)

I can’t see how having more than this would be a benefit. Unless you have an underground bunker/armory.

The ammo will be fine. Leave it in factory boxes and put it on a shelf in climate controlled portion of the house away from sources of moisture, like a regular ass closet shelf or a not-humid basement. Or under the bed. Whatever. If you want you can put it in an ammo can with desiccant or something but no matter

What do you mean by SHTF? Regional natural disaster and semi-WROL for a period of time…political turmoil or mostly peaceful protests or maybe those combined resulting in extra chance of being targeted and no availability for the time being due to things being closed/sold out…another covid lockdown that should last two weeks and the control freaks try to turn it into two years and everybody buys everything or the stores are closed…?

1k rounds of defensive ammo? Why? You going to buy multiple new guns and need to prove them with defensive ammo during this time?

That one bruh is a trolltard ignore literally everything he ever posts please

Once you have proven that your defensive round of choice works in your gun, with your magazines, in your hands, you need virtually none. A few mags worth and then a box or two to rotate the carried ammo out after 6-12 months if you want to play it safe.

I mean, I have an unopened case of 1k Federal HST 124gr I honestly don't intend to ever open but yes that's overkill

1k of regular bulk ammo isn’t enough imo. Look at what happened with Covid, ammo was hard to come by for awhile. You could blast 1k in a few months if you train regularly. Agree with nuggz twice a month minimum to keep skills in order.

Keep buying ammo until you're sick of spending money on it. Then you stop.

Or until you run out of secure storage space.

Fortunate that I can shoot all the 9mm I want for free at work and that training translates to my personal guns enough that using my own ammo can be kept to a minimum.

I need to buy more .223/.300 and 20ga. I have .380 stacked but I don't shoot it very much. My .357mag/.38 is a novelty that I don't shoot much. If I end up getting a .357 rifle, that will change.

EDIT: Fuk the ATF
