I would explain some very real/plausible scenarios in which they might find deadly force necessary. If they don't find any of the scenarios necessary, then I just stop there.

But you wanting to legislate gun-control laws forceseveryoneto have that same recourse." Then I'd have them clarify if they just personally feel that they couldn't kill, or if they think that literally no one should be able to defend themselves.Yes. I had a coworker that straight up said a woman locked in her home, when her violent abusive ex-husband for whom she has a restraining order, kicks in the front door and rushes her with a butcher knife saying "I'm going to rape and kill you bitch" is not justified in using a firearm or any other lethal force because "everybody has options and killing somebody is never justified". Some people are just hopeless, worthless excuses for human beings
I'd also ask:
"So you think that when Nazi Germany invades Poland in 1939, the Polish people have no recourse. They should just let Nazis kill them?"
I've had these conversations with people that I care about and also with work acquaintances. The ones that I have a good rapport with to where I could get more "real" with them and talk about some more macabre topics...
I explain to them that there is no physical law of the universe which prevents me from taking what belongs to you. I have free will to make that decision if I choose to. I then point at their cell phone and say "Okay, that belongs to me now. What are you going to do about it?"
I make the point that real life isn't a video game where it's impossible to shoot/kill certain non player characters, where there are (coded) laws that prevent people from doing something or force others to do something. Humans have free will.
Then I go on to explain that our society has decided that "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness" is an important thing. The concept of "property" is also an important thing. There are no laws of the universe which guarantee this, so we establish a government and set of ideas to protect it. The use, or implied threat, of deadly force is necessary to uphold this.
EDIT:
I think that the people who think that lethal force is never justified, in fact just do not feel that they are capable of using lethal force and therefore no one should be able to. By "capable", that could mean whether they're emotionally/mentally capable, or physically capable.

I had a pretty in depth conversation with my friend about gun laws and ARs specifically on our road trip. Brought up all the points about how low rifle deaths really are, rifles are more effective for defense, etc, etc...
He still just keeps saying "they aren't necessary, I don't see why you can't just use a pistol" SMH
We get to talking about confiscation and banning them altogether. I try saying that won't happen but he's convinced it will and "even if it takes 100+ years" things will change and they will get all the rifles eventually. I talk about the fact that there are people who will die to keep their guns.. "they are stupid and wrong, the gov. will just kill them."
I mention that they will come after other things once they get the rifles... "the slippery slope argument is invalid, we learned that in (insert random college course)"
I just dropped it after that.

Only then, when both my concealed permit and drivers license match my permanent address, can I pick up the fukking gun.
May be the same in other states, I just think it sucks. And I've got two more guns coming in the next week.

Strong friend logic. Is he from OR or CA?
That's "it's true because I learned it in college" reminds me of a 'conversation' I had in a class with a liberal arts professor who told the class that the single most efficient and effective form of government is the benevolent dictator...this in response to the idea that 'democracy' is overrated.

People generally have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that there are people out there that are looking to hurt them. Maybe or maybe not them in particular, but anyone. They don't understand that criminals are simply a different breed of people that are more than okay with causing the victim mental and/or physical pain or death to get what they want. It's just a hard truth to accept that we live in such a world - you can either adapt to it or perish, up to you.

Funny story:
At work we're having a big department meeting. We're going over tedious things that shouldn't have to be said. The director of our department is reminding people to be mindful of how long and when they take breaks.
Someone asks, "Well what if we have to use the restroom?"
Director, "You guys can govern yourselves, use the restroom when you need to. We don't want anyone to have any accidents on the carpet."
Small laughter from the department.
My buddy whom is notorious for asking cheeky questions raises his hand and asks, "What if they're not accidents?"
I started laughing so hard at that, no one else is laughing. LMAO at the thought of someone intentionally ****ting on the carpet.
Director bert stares him then moves on.

Welp . . . 2 out of 2 insurance-recommended roofers spent about the same amount of time looking and the roof needs to be replaced after that hail storm from hell we had. Was pretty sure that was going to be the case, but you never know. The last guy went up for about 5 mins today and came back down, said, "most of the roofs I've been on in this area had the standard shingles and they were trashed, but yours is the worst I've have seen with the impact resistant ones". Said it's not in danger of leaking, but it's bad enough to where it needs to be redone. I'm going to go with a different brand of shingle this time, I think.
Guess I'll be shelling out another deductible 3 years into it.
