Gonna go through all the pages on this thread, but wanted to add my two cents real quick (might be already mentioned), you guys need to stop focusing on the "thinking positive" aspect. That's like saying "think positive" when you just snapped your leg. You really can't to an extent. Focus more on the actions that will bring you positive thoughts.
So if you want to be successful in life and get a degree, instead of just thinking of yourself with the degree, think of steps that will get you closer to it. Even if it's something as simple as calling the registration office and setting up an appointment. Those steps will bring positivity.
I know this sounds extremely obvious, but I'm seeing tons of "How do I think more positive in a negative environment."
That's why it's important to complete these actions and then reflect (Meditate) on them once you've completed your day. It will bring you happiness and a sense of purpose.

Good thread OP. I feel like you did at the beginning of last year: depressed, hopeless, etc, the only difference is that I am a husband and a father, and it's affecting my family. I will try your method. Thanks brah. This is the kind of thread that I want to see more often on the misc.

Negativity is important to acknowledge, for changes to happen. (e.g. stepping on ****)
Another thing is I thought "things you're grateful for", means stuff like "not being crippled".
That's totally not it, that's basically negativity, and fear/negativity is poor longterm motivator.
Instead it's about acknowledging positive things that happened in the last 24h, so many years I've completely ignored them.
And with that I'm starting to see some other good things come, it's almost like a muscle I haven't used since I was 9.

repped OP. i love threads like this srs.
The world would be a better place if everyone would channel their frustration and anger to better themselves and be nicer to everyone they meet. Everyone has their own fights and stories to tell, you are not more important than another.

Updating you brah.
I am mid way through the program, I brought the whole package for $29.
Requires approx 3 - 5 hours per module (depending on how fast you type).
It's well structured.
Hopefully this will help me along the journey, but only hindsight can tell me if this is worthwhile for psychological change. (For example: I read a book called growth mindset by Carol Dweck which profoundly changed my outlook regarding personal development, but I had no idea it had such an influence until years later. And I have done some self help exercises that gave me a 'psychological high' that I thought would lead to change, but had no long term effect.)

Also, great thread. I just bought the book Psycho-cybernetics. The gf and I are on board to read it and implement into our lives (she read the whole thread too).
The journaling thing is going to be a challenge for me, but I'm going to also give it a shot.

Great sentiment, one that needs to be spread through this forum more often. Seeing some of the topics on the front page daily can be a downer for even rational people like myself, let alone the members on here who are already disenfranchised with how their lives are going. I don't care who you are, or where you currently are in life, there is certain propitiousness in this thread for everyone to take away; please use this resource to it's fullest potential. I know I will. I'm really glad to be contributing to something as constructive as this discussion.
I'm going to start implementing some of your routine into my day, some of this seems like it's effortless and effective; it just takes a little thought. I've already been meditating to good music for the past few weeks when I'm feeling stressed; my stress and anxiety over a lingering girl situation has had me a little off balance lately. It's something silly that shouldn't affect me the way it has, but I can't help it. Sometimes we allow the little things in our day to change the rationality with which we're thinking…I tend to overthink little arbitrary details to the point that it makes me sick. Relaxing with my headphones most nights while thinking about the root of why I'm feeling stressed really helps me boil down to the idea that my situation is really not so bad. I have a lot to be thankful for, and I really cannot lose sight of that. Basically, I have found solitude in cherishing what I do have, while trying to form a plan to obtain what I want to have. I'm hoping this extra meditation will help me bridge that gap….It's already helping.
I could go on for ages about where my anxieties lie, but I just wanted to bump the thread for now. I will return with a comprehensive analysis for no other purpose than catharsis. Keep it up brahs, this is a great resource.

Great thread. Subbed for later
I find myself doing many things really well, but I tend to lose momentum quite quickly even when I get rewarded really well.
For example, what I do for a living (you could say i'm doing online marketing, even though I have a B.Sc in Engineering) pays really well, and when I put a little effort into it, I make quite a lot of money.
I have my own business, and I spend around 8-10 hours every day in my office, working only about %20 of that time. That is ridiculous.
If I increase that to %40 (say 4 hours of real work every day), I can pretty much double my income. I rarely do that and can't really explain why
At 31, I thought being productive and focused would be much easier, but now I realize that's probably not true.
Taken a lot of tips from this thread, and we'll see how they improve my performance and overall feeling
Repped.

Still a great thread and should be stickied IMO.
I've been making some good forward steps since the start of the year, partly due to this thread but if anyone could offer some wisdom about something that'd be great.
How does one deal with a chronic injury that inhibits you from lifting (which i love) and just enjoying everyday life although being in pain 50% of the time. I've been extremely positive this year but its getting to me and if some miscers could offer some advice, opinions on this subject that'd be awesome

It's also important to catch negative thoughts in their tracks and push them out of your mind. A lot of people don't realize it but they have a very bad habit of thinking negatively. In any given situation, their first reaction is to apply a negative filter on it (ex. that sucks, this suck, I suck, what's the point, there's no hope, etc…).
The first step is to learn how to recognize those negative thoughts. Then immediately stop them. You have to put a hard stop to those negative thoughts while they are happening and tell your mind to STFU. It's very hard to do at first, and you will find yourself going through this process many, many times throughout the day. But eventually, you will break this habit and clear your mind for more positive, productive thoughts. You'll even find you have more energy throughout the day and go to bed less mentally drained.

First quarter of 2017 update!
I really took this thread to heart and I read psycho cybernetics. I've completely changed my mindset/perspective about so many things and I've set some really awesome goals for myself that I'm working towards every single day.
Thank you OP for making this thread. Not only did you motivate me, but my gf as well, and a few of my close friends.
My biggest issues have always been persistence and consistency in my hobbies and ventures. So only being at this for 3 months sounds like nothing but it's huge for me. I've been lifting more, I picked up Muay Thai, I read a lot more, I'm working on a business venture (my girlfriend is working on two, while she works and goes to Uni), I've been meal prepping every Sunday, etc. Another cool thing I'm striving for is financial independence, so that way I can focus on my hobbies and business ventures that I truly enjoy. I have to play it safer than some of you, as I have a son and a monthly child support payment (for now).
In contrast , some things I've stopped doing: drinking every single day, being super lazy, waking up late, going into work late, eating foods with artificial ingredients and sugars, going out and spending money all the time.
Overall life is just so much more enjoyable. Any time I don't think I am doing something to my full potential I stop and ask myself, "why not?" and then I figure out what I can be doing better. It's also helped a lot with anxiety, but my anxiety isn't nearly as bad as OP was describing so I won't complain about that at all.
Best of luck to anyone working towards betterment and optimization.

Sometimes I have negative thoughts at work too, or I dread doing something. I just really have to stop and think about why I am doing something or why someone said something to me, etc.

Honestly man, if you're a good looking remotely funny guy and just walk around joking, out going, treating people with respect and being there for people regardless of how they initially appear and treat them like equals from the start a whole new world of human interaction opens up.
I used to be consumed by stress and was always angry and chit when I first moved to where I am, but I realized i'm investing in myself getting crazy work exp, saving money so I may as well just make this the best of it and live life how I think it should be done and my quality of life has gone up 300%. Always in a good mood, eating healthy, taking on every obstacle head on and never dodging it (make sure you get rest when ever you burn out obviously). I always see the best in people and constantly try my hardest to be as humble as I can even though I'm successful and have it pretty put together, it's unreal the amount of people that have opened up to me, confide in me, and the network of healthy relationships I have flourishing around me. Whenever you have an off day the people around you that you were there for when they were low jump to your side and get you back on track. Next thing you know you're laughing and working through what's on your plate the same way you helped others and what starts as a miserable day can be turned around in a matter of an hour or two. Positivity, kindness and staying thankful/humble/assertive has been the key to completely turning my life around.
I'm not religious, maybe spiritual a little.. I honestly just look at myself as an avatar of love, positivity and creation (helps a lot in my role as a boss and leader to treat myself as an equal to my men and go to bat with them through thick and thin in the chit we deal with out here).
Just be thankful for what you have, because this damn existence is temporary and if you look back at how much time you spent miserable it will make you wanna kill yourself. It's ok to feel low and process emotion but realize the best thing you can do is just grit and pour it on, tomorrow is another day brahs.
