This is why I don't like living in multistory buildings. Doesn't matter how smart and careful you are, some retard a few stories below can fuk up and kill you.

Do live in one though but on the second floor. Ground level is the lobby and storage, so only 1 person living below me. And if chit goes down I just jump and aim for the bushes.

Been following the updates on TV all afternoon, apparently 6 confirmed dead & 20 in critical care. Stay safe London brahs, a lot been happening in that city in the past couple of months.

I can't even catch a glazed donut from 2ft away when someone tosses it me, this mf'er caught a baby under life or death pressure from a 10 story height. Give that man the lifetime achievement award right now, genuinely amazed.

Seems like an electrical/structural issue imo. Building was built in 1974 but was recently renovated. Reminds me of those outdated dorms I use to live in at college though.

Went on Amazon and bought a firemask/respirator for my girlfriend and myself for only 90 dollars.

Basically it's a mask and visor you put over your head to protect you from the heat /smoke and it gives you fresh air for an hour.

Had no idea there things were this cheap. Strongly recommend it to my misc brahs. Dying in a fire has to be one of the worst ways to go.

But seriously..imagine watching how big the fire really is on TV while youre on the top floor. How do you even put out a fire that big?

I've been inside these types of tower blocks several times. They're a left over from the old Thatcher era where most of them were built starting from the 50s right through to the 70s and they're a symbol of sink estates and council areas on any town and city skyline.

They are still associated with Local Authority but managed through private firms who act as the landlord and look after it. If the council needs to shove someone in somewhere they call these guys.

Cheap, quickly built and updated since the early 2000s with external cladding and updating of entry areas - to make it nicer.

What they couldn't do is change the claustophobic feel of them because they're built on the cheap and any additional space needed would have meant more steel, concrete and man hours to build them. Might seem stingy but over an entire block you're talking many metres of steel and cubic metres of concrete so they said "**** it, that'll do!"

This translates to absolute carnage if the corridors and stairswells are used as evacuation points. Remember, the most vulnerable people in a town and city can live here which include the elderly, single mothers, old people and disabled. To get around this they made sure to have dry risers on every point at both ends of the building and adequate fire evacuation measures.

Looks like the fire evac was useless and this caused the carnage. Imagine a corridor 1.5metres wide. Push 20 people down it in a hurry and you'll see some hurt or frustrated and then you have the stair wells.

Now imagine those corridors full of black, choking smoke which can knock you unconcious if you breath in too much. Some residents were saying the plastic cladding was producing horrific smoke which could be toxic - an even bigger killer. The cladding is fire resistant, not fire proof I'm betting because the concrete external surface is all thats left.

The lifts for these buildings are claustophobic too. Lift cars are no bigger than 1.5m in depth and around that in width. heightwise they're around 2m. They are slow and won't work during a fire.

The smoke and fire raced through the building as a result of the ducting and old gas pipes installed when first built. Not sure about the gas pipes but they were probably removing them as flats in the UK are not allowed gas due to safety measures and a major incident in the 80s which resulted in several flats collapsing.

These ducts and vents would have decades worth of dust, rubbish and other crap along with the rubbish and flammable items installed or placed around. Which in itself is against Health & Safety guidelines.

This management company will get pulled up on criminal negligence and people need to see prison time.


Also these buildings were loaded with asbestos so expect the city of London to get hit with big law suits.

Just want to add two details to the already shocking description you gave: there is a single stairwell for the entire building and some witnesses reported fire escape doors, which are supposed to be fire doors, on fire.

The second point is hearsay, but the first point is of crucial importance because it shows how the authorities thought a fire could be managed in such a building. Basically, the reason there's only one stairwell is because in the event of a fire, they prefer for people to stay in their apartments, assuming that a fire can be contained in a single apartment and by the time fire crews arrive, they can evacuate as necessary. Sadly, this unprecedented disaster threw all those (badly assessed) plans to the wind.

The bottom line here is that even if the management company met the minimum health/safety/fire requirements as required by law, which they stated following this incident, clearly those minimum requirements are a far cry from what they should be.

That says only 6 dead so far, I was expecting the number to be more like 200-300 considering the building has 600+ and the fire procedure was for everyone to stay in their apartments.

Which the irony is strong today. Most of the people that live there are muslim. Which has more irony. Muslims on twitter are laughing at the fire happening. I guess assuming it's full of a non-muslims.

Someone needs to go to jail over this, but 0% chance that any person/company will state "we are ultimately responsible for the safety and well being of the residents".
