S'up,
Thought I would post something that might help out some of the people learning harder languages like Japanese, Mandarin and Russian...
This guy has created a course called the FLR method.
Basically you learn high frequency phrases of that language, questions that you are likely to be asked by any native speaker you encounter online or IRL.
This video shows how the course is laid out...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt7JWfYXcvY
He provides audio and text, in the course.
Japanese...
https://flrmethod.com/learn/japanese/
Mandarin...
https://flrmethod.com/learn/mandarin-chinese-level1/
Russian...
https://flrmethod.com/learn/russian/
It's designed so that the text and audio can be put into ANKI or Memrise for daily review.
This dude in action(though he has a very ethically questionable way of making youtube videos, which is filming people secretly. I'm not sure if he asks their permission after recording to upload or not)...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNkPgRu3zd8
Basically, the course is rote memorization of high frequency phrases, to get you conversational quickly.

FLOTD:
Pimsleur Russian 1 Lessons 24&25- 25 was the last lesson i did 2 days ago. but i completed it with only 60% confidence. I had noticed 23, 24, and 25 all had me feeling like i was behind the curve and struggling. Not thinking of the responses quickly enough. Fuking up the pronunciation when I did. Instead of enduring another half hour of being dragged unconfident, I repeated lessons 24 and 25 while i cleaned my living room and easily completed it with 90 to 95% confidence.
Just a reminder to everyone in their language journeys, if you find yourself advancing through lessons and feeling "behind" for 2 or 3 lessons in a row... might be time to just replay the last few and cement the skills learned. Also scheduled an italki skype session later this week with a french speaker. $15 for a 45 minute chat. Hope it goes well
Anyways, the biggest thing that slowed me down with learning french was constantly hopping from one method to another. Constantly searching for "the golden key" program, when in actuality the best key is consistency and use of the language. Kind of like workout programs.

Here are the questions and answers covered in his course...
"STEP#1

- Who is your teacher?
*And any other questions using ''who''

- What time is it?
- What is today's date?
- What are your hobbies?
*And any other questions using ''what''
-----------------------------------------
(When)

- How much time do you spend studying the language?
- How do you say(......)
- How do you write (......)

--------------------------------------------------
(What kind)

- What kind of books are you using?
- What kind of audio are you using for the language?

http://how-to-learn-any-language.com....asp?TID=18808
In the above link, he gives the method away for free.
You basically pay for him doing the work for you, to compile question and answer templates and audio.
I've heard Japanese and Mandarin are really hard to get a point where you can have a basic conversation, so might be a good way of hitting the ground running.

I don't know why but i seem to witness this 8 to 10 times a year at random. Someone learns how to say "My name is mike", "I really like this food", and literally like 2 other phrases and then they go around telling people "Yeah i speak German" or yeah "I speak french" then without fail someone within earshot.... "ah bon!? tu parles français???" and then it's just *deer in the headlights face* i cringe everytime. il parle fukall, Pierre.
but yeah, the draw for me is being in the target country conversing with locals in their language, running errands in their language, absorbing the culture. it seems a lot of people on language forums get to like A2 in 4 or 5 language just for the sake of being familiar with them but not being able to actively use them. this route doesn't appeal to me.

I learned some very basic Polish with a coworker, and thought I would get Pimsleur Polish to surprise her... My brain was like "WTF?!", trying to construct phrases.
When I went back to her and used some of the language, she looked at me like an Alien and told me the terms I was using was a formal way of addressing old people. However, Pimsleur was teaching it as a way of addressing an average person in the street, when you ask them for directions.
The gist of Pimsleur level 1, as far as I can tell, is learning basic tourist survival questions and answers. (Can you give me directions?, How much does this cost?, Do you want to go for a drink?, etc.) Am I wrong?
I don't know anything about the guy so i can't speak to him specifically, but on a separate note, is there anything more cringe than someone claiming to speak a languge and then getting exposed on the spot?
Laoshu kind of falls into that, depending on the language.Mandarin and Cantonese he seems to be at an intermediate level, but every other language he seems to only know a beginner or upper beginner level.
He has (IMO a very cleverly devised trick) of learning high frequency phrases, which (as witnessed in his videos) people pretty much are guaranteed to ask you, if they know you are not of their ethnicity and you are learning their language.

Checked out the flr method discs and book
Book is 7 pages long and cd has about 50 phrases on it. So not worth the money - pretty much just memorizing catch phrases to say the basic stuff. Pretty much just say A expecting B answer then follow it up with another A phrase. Works great to impress people for the first time meeting them and that’s it.

To be fair, Pimsleur level 1 is about $100, for about the same amount of phrases, but it doesn't include a transcript though.
A big difference however is that Pimsleur is available from most libraries for free.

FLOTD: Was unmotivated but managed to plop down and get a half hour of Pimsleur in.
Pimsleur French 3 Lesson 7.
first bolded point - like many languages, polish has Masculine/feminine as well as familiar and formal. If a new English speaker from Brazil moved to the USA and I wanted to teach them survival English. I'd definitely teach him "Excuse me, do you know where Red Square is?" as opposed to "Ay, where's Red Square?". I can't fault pimsleur for wanting to prevent me and other learners from getting their ass kicked abroad by talking informally to the wrong person. I was dating a girl in Paris for almost a year and occasionally I would use the formal-vous instead of familiar-tu. She would just chuckle and say "TU mon chér". If this lady is "looking at you like an alien" and not encouraging your studies simply because you used the formal form, tell her to go fuk herself.
second bolded point - you're right about this 100%. it also introduces numbers. but I guess I'm a little confused as to what you're expecting from pimsleurone. Even if you substitute Pimsleur with FLR, okay you'll initially fool people with the particular phrase you used and the ease at which it came out but once they ask anything not scripted by the FLRprogram, you're fuked because you didn't take the time to learn the basics of sentence construction. I know being fluent in a new language is an exciting proposition and we all want to obtain this level as quickly as possible but there's no program that will replace consistent practice, basic grammar knowledge, and regular use of the language.
Giving a West Side Barbell powerlifting program to a person that never lifted isn't going to make them bench 400lbs in two months simply because they started adding chains and other exotic chit to their routine. Gotta put the work and calories in.

The gist of Pimsleur level 1, as far as I can tell,is learning basic tourist survival questions and answers. (Can you give me directions?, How much does this cost?, Do you want to go for a drink?, etc.) Am I wrong?

In on thread. Will report back with what I decide on.
What's the consensus on reading a book written in the language you are learning? Beneficial? Or potentially a roadblock?

From what I can gather (from the course creator himself), it's just a way of hitting the ground running, so you get into speaking quickly. He also openly recommends picking up courses like Teach Yourself and Assimil alongside the FLR Method...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK9cX9QFnJ0

To be fair, Pimsleur level 1 is about $100, for about the same amount of phrases, but it doesn't include a transcript though.
A big difference however is that Pimsleur is available from most libraries for free.

I don't know if I mentioned this in an earlier post, but there's a lot of chatter online about practicing your language learning by playing games in your target language.
A mod for the game Pillars of Eternity takes it one step further.
Using the language mixer, you can add a "new" language script which is just compiled lines of two other languages. So each line of written dialogue will be in both English and one of the other languages, next to each other.

Works in French, Spanish, Italian, German, Russian and Polish.
Here's the thread on it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/projecteter...arn_languages/
If any of the links don't work, let me know. I have the mod file and can toss it on mega-upload or something.
Edit: I should add - stuff like this is for reviewing and practicing what you've learned and to help with retention. Not for actual learning (more or less). You should be a B1 at least if you are going to play games in the target language, else you're more likely to get discouraged

I remember reading Benny's review (the first link), and my experience of Polish Pimsleur lead me to agree with his assessment.
Honestly, (and no judgement, I named Pimsleur in the OP) I'm surprised that Pimsleur is so popular ITT. I thought that Teach Yourself and Assimil would be more popular.
Like you say though, if someone gets Pimsleur for free then IMO it's great.
