I've already explained briefly how James Gilligan relates a philosophy of masculinity as dominance/superiority and it's relationship to violence.

I'll repost it here...

"... a philosophy/worldview that says to be a 'real man' is to be dominant or superior to others. He said that men who hold that philosophy about masculinity, take any perceived challenge to their sense of dominance or superiority as something that needs to be dealt with by any means necessary (from verbal aggression, to outright violence)."
Watching the Saints lose to a non-call probably made 100s of people angry, upset, probably more aggressive. Doesn't mean that watching sports is a bad thing because it can increase aggression. Feelings of aggression are unavoidable. It's about how you deal with your aggression and hostile feelings is what matters here. And most people aren't going to resort to crime, if they do, they have other problems
In the book I recommended, they spoke about the difference between anger that is frustration and anger that is aggression.

In a nutshell, a bunch of research has concluded that simply being frustrated does not lead to violence, what is needed is a perceived insult (to one's sense of self or status)... Which is why the philosophy of masculinity as superiority/dominance can be dangerous - any time they don't perceive themselves as superior to another (an insult to their sense of status), they feel compelled to 'knock the other person down' to reaffirm their sense of superiority.
I'm curious as to how narcissism is being defined here and based on that definition, under what criteria are we labelling music narcissistic?
Perceiving oneself to be superior to others.
Because narcissism is a very strong word and there is an actual diagnosis for it.
I understand why you misinterpreted, but didn't write Narcissitic Personality Disorder (the diagnosis), I wrote the word Narcissism.
People might be overly concerned with materialism, appearance and wealth but I would hesitate to call it narcissism necessarily. I'm not saying that certain hip-hop music doesn't promote that mentality and has certain elements that MAY be indicative of a narcissistic personality. But this seems to be a very subjective grey area between just trying to look out, take care and do for yourself, simple bragging which let's be honest everyone has probably done at some point. At what point does the scale tip to narcissistic levels from just simple "Look at me, I got money!". I mean, me personally I would just consider that funny and attention-whoring rather than being narcissist.
Self aggrandizement/arrogance is a backbone of hip hop. Gangta rappers constantly talk (and show) how tough they are, how much money they have, how many women they ****... Constantly.

Humility is definitely not (IMO) a value in hip hop culture, IMO.

Again in my previous post, I have acknowledged that music can influence your mind-state. Setting a PR as an example. It can increase aggression say by listening to aggressive music. And maybe that little bit of irritability and heightened sense of bravado may push you slightly over the tipping point as to where you would commit assault. However, I think you are missing the bigger picture here.

How is this at all exclusive to rap music? If we are going to apply the same standards here then any aggressive music is bad because it could possibly lead to somebody to commit a crime. Anything that increases aggression in general would be considered bad. Different things elicit aggression in people too so I don't think we want to go down that rabbit hole. But what I'm saying is just because something increases aggression doesn't make it inherently bad. Music that increases aggression isn't inherently bad.
It increases aggression and (arguably) it promotes a philosophy of masculinity as superiority/dominance. It's not just about the aggression, it's both.

A 'real nikka' is superior and dominant over others in regards to; how tough they are, their willingness to be violent, how much money they have, and how many women they sleep with. According to hip hop.
A million other things can increase aggression and these aren't necessarily huge factors as to why crime statistics as they are and nor are they even necessarily bad things inherently. Nor are many solutions including the one proposed here to reduce "things that reduce aggression" really practical or feasible.
Encouraging men to challenge a philosophy of masculinity as superiority and dominance over others is practical, and can be done.

Hip hop (IMO) encourages men to adopt the above philosophy of masculinity.

(I'm not talking about encouraging men to become wimps. I'll show you want I mean, by man still being masculine, but not having a belief that masculinity means being superior or dominate over others - in regards to status...

Martial Artists Matt Thornton who said that he subscribes to this perspective; A beggar will bow down to any man who they see as having higher status than them, but at the same time if they get some status they expect people to bow to them. A warrior won't bow down to any man, but at the same time doesn't want any man to bow to them.

Matt Thornton founded an international school that teaches MMA. He's not a wimp, but he actively discourages the 'other people need to bow/be scare of me/do what I want' mentality.
I think we are digressing a little bit here from the main point I was really trying to make. If we were to get rid of rap music today, do you think crime statistics would decrease significantly in any way? I say no because I don't think it's a significant factor in terms of crime abundancy.
I think there would be a noticeable decrease, because IMO rap music has a lot of influence in certain social environments.

If rappers generally began rapping about introspection, therapy, spirituality, etc, (instead of violence, money and promiscuity), I think we could see certain social environments begin to turn around in a generation.

I really like this rapper for example, and I think if more rappers were like him things would be a bit better (I'm not even saying they would need to be Christian, just willing to make introspective albums with songs like this...)

In the song the brah talks about wanting to go out and committing violence, but instead prayed and introspected, and realized that it wouldn't heal his pain and anger...

(It's based on his actual life.)

Kind of. Gansgta rap is a subgenre where rappers talk about gang life and its subsequent effects on them. Trap is the most popular genre now, which isn't considered gangsta rap. Hood/trap life =/= gang life

1) 21 Savage WAS a gangsta rapper with his first few tapes, but he's moving towards a more commercial/trap sound.

2) 6ix9ine is more or less a "gangsta" rapper

3) Kodak Black is not considered a gangsta rapper because he doesn't talk about gang stuff. A lot of hood guys have guns, but aren't part of a gang. His group is called Sniper Gang, but is a collective, not a gang.

4) Lil Wayne has rarely rapped about guns or gang life. He does rap about drugs, but that's a different subgenre all together.

5) ***** Mane is a trap artist who talks about selling drugs and **** like that. He was in a gang, but isn't considered a gangsta rapper.

6) Meek Mill is also a trap artist. Wasn't part of a gang afaik.

7) NBA is or was considered a gangsta rapper. Also a trap artist too.

It's more or less a matter of labels vs. content of rap. Not many people are rapping about murder as much anymore because of the implications behind it.

in what way? as the statement as it is isn't necessarily a bad thing although it can lead a person down a dangerous road.

I understand why you misinterpreted, but didn't write Narcissitic Personality Disorder (the diagnosis), I wrote the word Narcissism.
I didn't. I know the difference between narcissistic personality disorder and narcissism. NPD has criteria which is pretty much the definition of what narcissism is.

Self aggrandizement/arrogance is a backbone of hip hop. Gangta rappers constantly talk (and show) how tough they are, how much money they have, how many women they ****... Constantly.
We can argue this but it'll be digression from the main point.

You didn't answer my question. You seemed to have made the link that aggression=bad and that rap is bad partially because it causes aggression which increases likelihood of assault. You can't use that argument to say that music causes criminal behaviour as I've explained. Aggression can be used for something productive or for evil/harm. The only part of that that makes sense is the so called negative values that hip-hop music promotes. Which I never denied, I only denied how influential it is in the grander scheme. And it seems like you just made up a definition (real nikka) to suit your argument lol, many people will disagree with you there. And apparently it is according to hip-hop. I'm not sure how to respond to this honestly because I feel like you are just making up stuff. I don't even think hip-hop as a whole can even come to a consensus as to what a "real nikka" is.
Encouraging men to challenge a philosophy of masculinity as superiority and dominance over others is practical, and can be done.
Sure, depending on a whole host of factors, whether it will help, and whether it is needed.
Hip hop (IMO) encourages men to adopt the above philosophy of masculinity.

(I'm not talking about encouraging men to become wimps. I'll show you want I mean, by man still being masculine, but not having a belief that masculinity means being superior or dominate over others - in regards to status...

Matt Thornton founded an international school that teaches MMA. It also isn't necessarily the views of the rappers themselves. And I've said before, specific themes or lyrics have much influence to the listeners to go and do these things.
I think there would be a noticeable decrease, because IMO rap music has a lot of influence in certain social environments.

If rappers generally began rapping about introspection, therapy, spirituality, etc, (instead of violence, money and promiscuity), I think we could see certain social environments begin to turn around in a generation.
I guess we can agree to disagree then.

Hip hop is for those without the work ethic or talent to learn how to sing or play an instrument. It's that simple.

Nothing against poetry but poetry isn't music...and I don't think these rappers will be competing with any of the GOAT poets of history LMAO

Again (in case you haven't), I strongly advise reading theology and psychology works, regarding arrogance/narcissism.

Christianity, Buddhism, Hare Krishna, etc, all have things to say about arrogance/narcissism, and it's antithesis... Humility.
I didn't. I know the difference between narcissistic personality disorder and narcissism. NPD has criteria which is pretty much the definition of what narcissism is.
No.

When people talk about Narcissism they aren't talking about NPD, necessarily. Narcissism as a term has a history and use beyond the diagnosed personality disorder.
You didn't answer my question. You seemed to have made the link that aggression=bad and that rap is bad partially because it causes aggression which increases likelihood of assault.
I explained that I don't see things in reductionist way, ie. one issue alone causes something.

I already linked it to a wider view of problems of hip hop, (it's view on masculinity, it reinforcing negative values and behaviour in a social context).

I think the issue is, that you keep examining things I'm bringing up in isolation from one another. (That applies to the paragraph that you wrote, after the above sentence.)
Again it is a lot of generalities, I know plenty of hip-hop, a lot of songs that don't promote the specific values of "superiority" and "domination".
The majority of rap that I've known is about self-aggrandizment, bragging about how tough they are, how many women they've slept with, how much drugs they take, how much money they are, how willing they are to kill.
And there are plenty of songs like this, to say hip-hop as a genre itself is based on "superiority" and "domination" is not true.
Gangsta rap seems to be the majority of rap, and so I believe it does.

I'm skeptical that there are plenty of hip hop songs where people talk about having a desire to commit violence, and then coming to the conclusion that revenge or violence doesn't heal pain and destroys people spiritually.

I don't think that is the mainstream.

Again, I'm asking for a list of popular songs that explicitly have an anti-violence message.

Nothing against poetry but poetry isn't music...and I don't think these rappers will be competing with any of the GOAT poets of history LMAO

When the standards of intellectualism and musicality reach all time lows stuff like this thrives.

amazing a greek mythology concept album impresses you so much btw LMAO
A hip hop producer is not constricted by the limited sounds that can be produced by a guitar, bass and drum kit. A talented producer has every sound ever recorded at his disposal to chop up, distort and create something completely new with. That’s a huge reason why electronic music pushes forward whilst rock (which I also enjoy) is dying!

Read your original post idiot. I’m not saying that album specifically is the greatest music ever made. It’s an example hip hop that has artistic value. Clearly you are tool a narrow minded troll I don’t know why I waste my time.

Tell you what OP, how about you post your favorite jazz albums and show us what a musical connoisseur you are? I bet you couldn’t name 5 jazz albums without google.

Hip hop is a derivative of jazz by the way.

Based on your posts in R/P, I think I know who you are referring to when you say 'the people'.
