I'm taking a trip to Europe next month and I want to get a DSLR camera. I was thinking of the Nikon D3300, but I'm just a novice, so I'm not sure if that's right for me. Do you guys have recommendations on what a newbie should get to start in on photography?

I wonder what portion of the lens rental business is dedicated to idiots wanting to flash expensive gear and how much comes back full of sand.

Buy used. In the price range you're looking at one of two things will happen. You'll either not like photography or want to upgrade. In both cases you don't want to eat the depreciation on new gear. There are piles of low shutter count cameras and minty fresh lenses out there. You'll be able to save ~1/3 of the price by buying used instead of new.

In the price range you're looking at, there's the Nikon D3200 & D3300 and Canon T5 (1200D) & T6 (1300D). There are plenty of good deals on eBay. The best deals are auctions. Use the 'completed listings' , 'used' and 'auction' filters to get an idea of the price ranges auctions end at. Look for listing that include the 18-55mm kit lens. Extra batteries, a bag, the other kit zoom (55mm-200mm or 75mm-300mm), and memory cards are going to be cheaper if you buy them in a bundle.

D3200/T5 w/ kit lens, battery, charger, & strap should be around $200. D3300/T6 should be under $300.

This is sound advice. No idea why people buy their first cheap camera new when there is no way you'll hold onto it if they like photography. Digital is evolving much more slowly now anyway.

Awesome! That's exactly the type of advice that I was looking for. I always get a bit sketched out on ebay on whether the gear will be legit or not, but the price isn't too bad.

A point and shoot. Although you can set your DSLR to full auto, it's really not the best occasion to invest in expensive (and unfamiliar) camera gear.

Total pain in the arse to carry too

Look for gear that is clean and has large enough pictures so the zoom feature is enabled. The idea is to look for gear that looks like it has barely been used, because it has barely been used. The majority of entry level DSLRs are used maybe half a dozen times. They are used for the day the person got it (Christmas or birthday) and then a few events such as holidays, weddings, vacations, birthdays, graduations, and family gatherings. As long as there are no signs of sand, you'll be fine.

It's also easy to file cases for things not showing up as described on eBay. You're not going to be on the hook for anything. If you pay through PayPal, you've got 60 days to get your money back if something shady happened.

I agree with this. Cameras can be a pain to carry around.

A Sony RX100 or RX100 mk II are in the $200-$300 range. Small enough to easily carry, has a good lens, and has controls that allow for using the camera in manual/aperture priority/shutter priority.

With any of the cameras I've listed, you won't have a problem reselling them on eBay. You'll end up losing ~15-20% if you sell the gear in the next 6 months. Most of that will be fees from eBay. The other portion will be depreciation. You can avoid the eBay fees by selling locally. If you sell in late November/early December, you might break even.

I have a Canon M3 w/ Adapter and a 40mm pancake lens combo I am going to put on ebay soon. I took this to Japan while I backpacked and it was perfect.

The cheap ones are the previous generation Vi DC. The current generation G2's are going for around $1k. I haven't used either. I do own a Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 and have been happy with it.

I haven't used either of the 1.4's. I was under the impression the 1.8G was preferred over the 1.4G. The 1.4G has a reputation for slow autofocus. I haven't had any problems with the autofocus speed of my 1.8G.

I love the heck out of my 85 1.8D. It's not a speed demon with focusing, but it's very manageable. It's a real joy to use, too. It gives you perfect separation when shooting portraits so the subject doesn't feel like you're completely up in their grill when shooting head shots, too.

I would even argue the 35 f1.8 is better for street stuff, moderately smaller in size, and a tad bit wider but both are excellent.

broke my tamron 24-70 2.8 while in ireland evidently. Fell and the lens took a brunt of it. Doesn't autofocus atm. Sent it in to tamron for repairs. Lets see what they return with :/

Foques, going by memory here but when I looked at it around the time it was launched reviews suggested it wasn't faster but AF was supposed to be more accurate than the 1.4D.

I never replaced mine because I preferred the 70-200 2.8 for anything that moved. An 85 was never going to match that for AF speed/accuracy. When I could pose the subject or they weren't moving much then I'd use the 85.

A step up budget wise but did you consider the 105 1.4E? Requires another 5ft or so of working distance but it's supposedly Nikon's best lens in the <200mm range .

The lens is unusable for portraits at 1.4. The DoF is not large enough to get the tip of the nose and eyes in focus. No one shoots that lens wide open. The DC-Nikkor 105mm f/2 is ~$1450 cheaper than the 1.4E. Though I'm not sure how the auto-focus speed compares between the lenses.

yeah, at that price range it bites. I'd love to consider it, but after splurging on the 200mm a few months ago, wife will kill me if I get another high end glass… for now.
I used my D version shooting concerts with quite a great success; so far G has been great for portraits (and holy cow is it quieter), but not as agile as D.

Update: They have resent me back the lens and it feels like they sent me a totally new one! Thing looks pristine guys!

I think i definitely lucked out with tamron here…really happy to go out and shoot with it again.

My old lens had scratches all over the body and two big ones on the front element…both gone:

They told me weeks the other day and now all the sudden a shipment came in and mine will be here tomorrow.

Need some purchase decision advice.

I paired back my photo equip 5 or more years ago. I only kept my Canon 5d, 50/1.8, 85/1.8, 200/2.8 primes since they weren't worth selling. I also have a Sigma 70mm macro and some old Leica manual focus lenses. I've been shooting more recently and want to get better equipment. Back then Nikon was really pulling ahead of Canon with what their cameras offered particularly in resolution and dynamic range. Not sure if that's still the case anymore. Sony also looked promising with in body IS but I think it was only good for 2 stops. But they did share sensors with Nikon since they were the manufacturer.

So with maybe $1000-1500 worth of Canon equip should I jump ship? I'm looking for more DR and better high ISO performance. Frame rate and AF aren't that big of a deal since I have mostly been using my manual focus Leica lenses. Can these be converted to Nikon with adapters? Likewise I don't shoot vid but it would be nice to have that option. I'd like to stick with full frame but if aps-c has advanced then I may consider it. I've briefly look at Canon offerings and I see the 5d2 and 6d are quite cheap at $600 used. Going that route I could see if I can find a decent $1k L glass zoom like a 24-70 or 24-105. It'll give me vid capabilities and better high ISO performance but I'm wondering if it's enough of an upgrade. Should I jump to the $1500-2000 range and get a 6d2 or 5d3? Do Sigma and Tamron zoom lenses compare to Canon L glass? Do they still have AF issues since they have to reverse engineer the focus algo? I remember canon used to offer microfocus adjustment that could help compensate for this issue. Seems like that's not the case anymore.
wait wut

Canon has one claim to fame that trumps all other by a mile: lens. Sony builds camera for the masses. So unless you're full-time, money making camera guy, there's not much reason not to switch to something with more convenience and technology.
Canons are obsolete. Until they decide to update, go with Sigma.

That used to be the case. Not these days. Nikon has filled the gaps and for a while there actually had a clear advantage in some areas before the 200-400 and 11-24 showed up. I'd say across the board it's pretty even, right up to the super teles.

So Sigma has resolved focusing issues with Canon cameras? I know Sigma had some nice primes that could rival L glass at much cheaper prices. Their zoom lenses weren't on par though. But to be quite honest I most use primes ans use my feet to zoom in or out. So with say a 28mm, 50 or 85mm and a 200mm lens I can cover most of the scenarios I'll shoot in.

Nikons used to cost quite a bit more and the used market was smaller further given Canon the advantage at least value wise. Is that still the case?

Looking at various cameras I'm kinda disappointed that DR hasn't been improved much in 5 years. Was also hoping they'd have max sync speed greater than 1/250 but it appears you have to use strobes to trick the camera because shutter curtains are just too slow. No real technological advancements but just incremental upgrades. As such I'm thinking of just going the cheaper route and spend $600-700 or so on a DLSR and use the rest for a lens or better strobes. What Nikon would compare to say a 6d or would be available used for $600-700?
wait wut

I need some advice.

I'm still new. I bought a d750 last year with a 85mm 1.8…I ended up selling the gear two months later

Fast forward to a month ago. I bought another d750 and I bought the 24-70mm G2 2.8 VR lens.
The lens showed up a few days ago.

I'm trying to learn to shoot in manual mode for a change. It seems like I can't get any pictures in focus.

I understand ISO for the most part. Lower the light the higher you want it. I guess I am having a hard time understand the f stop and the shutter speed.

I have been manually playing with both. Just seems like I can't get anything in focus or anything to really turn out. I've been practicing on my puppy as far as taking pictures.

There's a car show this Sunday. Over 400 cars will be attending. I really want to go out and take some nice shots of the cars during the day and do some night photography downtown.

So the higher the F stop the 'wider' the picture will be?

Seeking advice….

Again, I guess its the shutter speed and the f stop i'm not understanding. I really want to learn manual mode.
