Many people argue an AR effective range is really more like 300 yards. Anything beyond that I’d rather have .308 or better. Of course you can get hits easily beyond 300, but effective ?! It’s up for debate.
In real life you don't get to call time out while you swap to another rifle though, soo…

When you need to go beyond 300, you kinda want an optic that can do that as good as possible.

BTW - forces around the globe have been putting people in the dirt with 5.56 well beyond 300 yards for a loong time now lol.

My Gen 2 Strike Eagle 5-25 is as clear as lots of optics I've looked through that cost 50+% more. It's an incredibly good 5-25 optic for the price.

I'm just browsing some of the scopes that you guys are talking about, and some of these guys are porkers. My AR will feel like an LMG if I put a scope and mount on it.

I have two LPVOs that are around 21 oz including mount which is pretty damn good for a variable power scope.

An Eotech HHS II is going to be at about 22 oz and isn't exactly variable power.

Only LPVO I have experience with is the SWFA 1x4 so I'm not much help. The first one I had I couldn't focus the diopter no matter what I tried. Sent it back and got another. On the second one the power ring froze up out of the blue one day, for no reason I could ascertain. The next replacement has been fine through several hundred rounds. I have another on a 10/22 that has also been fine. My bad luck seems to be out of the norm, but it's not a ringing endorsement. Other SWFA branded optics have been rock solid for me, which is why I kept giving 1x4 another chance. Dialing with the scope has been spot on, but the illumination is week compared to what someone coming from a red dot would be used to. I don't use illumination in the daytime for what I do with the guns, so I can't remember for sure, but I don't remember it being daylight visible.

My son is getting older, almost a year. Time to get serious about gun safety in the house. They used to be everywhere but last weekend I collected everything and got it organized in the safe.

This bring me to my last hurdle. Bedside safes/deterrents. I did a bunch of research and came up with the V Line XD Top Draw. Inside dimensions will allow me to get my EDC in the holster in the safe, along with my mag and flash light holster. Then I think I'll combo that with those Stopbox's which are plastic deterrents. Mainly as something I can put the gun in and store it in the truck when I can't CC in a certain place like his school or whatever.

V Line XD Top Draw https://www.amazon.com/V-Line-Ind-XD...s%2C155&sr=8-3

Stopbox https://stopboxusa.com/products/stopbox

Curious on opinions from other dads trying to keep guns out of the hands of children and while complying with the law just in case something happens. Seems like they are throwing the book at parents these days. Doing my do diligence

My problem is I have a literal genius young son who is very curious about everything. I'm pretty sure anything with a key he will be able to get into. Anything requiring a combo leaves it up to chance.

I've sat him down a few times and told him about guns in the house, and to not mess with them/what they're capable of. I think I'm going to take him to the range to the point across then look at bedside solutions.

lock picking lawyer has heavily changed how I look at these boxes.

My guess is he will be able to figure out the stopbox. There is only like 6 combination options. There is a side button that has to be pressed and you have to press down on the lid which does make it harder to figure out. Its not a safe but apparently approved by the DOJ, I didn't see the CDOJ which seems like people hold as the bible. Its over priced for sure, currently $130 for buy one get one free. I have a few handguns so if I do like it, I would want 2. Camping, road trips, in-laws house, etc. It might be perfect honestly.

The V Line is has like 1089 combination options. 10ga steel and Its labeled as a safe. The XD has a metal housing for the lock inside so it can't be punched out in 15 seconds like a lot of them. I would bolt it to my end table so if someone wants to steal it, they need to take the whole table. The safe isn't for thieves though. My EDC would really only be in there when I'm sleeping or just took the gun off the belt for the evening.

I wanted no electronics, no batteries, no complicated locks. This combo is the best I can come up with. Sucks together its around $400, I would rather have another AR kit to play with LOL

What I have seen is there is no perfect answer. At the end of the day, if anyone wants in any of these devices, they will get in.

I'm all ears from real life users of these kinds of safes though.

Get some dummy rounds and use them to teach him, make it routine to learn to clear a weapon, load the magazine and definitely take him to the range anytime you can

Repetition is how the information gets burned into their brains.

The constant barrage of safety information over time should bring the point home.

agreed so far. Got it for around $650…which is a pretty good deal. But man is it tiny….going to love the lightweight but going to take some getting used to finding the dot on quick shouldering.

Feel like I need it on setting 9 of 12. 12 is nuclear blindingly bright…like looking into a laser. 11 is too bright to really use too. 10 same. 9 seems the sweet spot. Anything lower than 8 is wasted. Then from 4-1 is for nods.

The Industrial Revolution to me is just like a story I know called The Puppy Who Lost His Way. The world was changing, and the puppy was getting bigger.
So, you see, the puppy was like industry, in that they were both lost in the woods. And nobody, especially the little boy - society - knew where to find him. Except that the puppy was a dog. But the industry, my friends, that was a revolution.
