So im guessing your looking at a 16613 then, the blue dial imo is the best looking 2 tone watch on the market and one of my all time favourite Rolex models. If the black/gold combo is something you are set on then look elsewhere , lots of examples if nice 16613's all over the place for the same money. I wouldn't buy from a jeweler that is so willing to swap out dials etc.

jqnmartinez, sorry I don't have any specific info for you, but I would advise you not to settle for something that you don't want. It might take a little longer than you anticipate, but you should get the exact model you want. No ragrets.

Law enforcement bases its investigation and prosecution of this type of thing on trademark infringement which is codified in 15 U.S.C. 1114. It states:

(1) Any person who shall, without the consent of the registrant

(a) use in commerce any reproduction, counterfeit, copy, or colorable imitation of a registered mark in connection with the sale, offering for sale, distribution, or advertising of any goods or services on or in connection with which such use is likely to cause confusion, or to cause mistake, or to deceive; or

(b) reproduce, counterfeit, copy, or colorably imitate a registered mark and apply such reproduction, counterfeit, copy, or colorable imitation to labels, signs, prints, packages, wrappers, receptacles or advertisements intended to be used in commerce upon or in connection with the sale, offering for sale, distribution, or advertising of goods or services on or in connection with which such use is likely to cause confusion, or to cause mistake, or to deceive.

So paragraph (a) talks about using a counterfeit in commerce, meaning a business or trade scenario, not a private person to private person exchange. It also talks about using the brand logos to cause confusion or mistake, which is why I said that he must disclose that it is a replica.

Paragraph (b) again talks about how it is illegal to use trademarked brand logos in the manufacture of goods, etc. So therefore the crime is being committed by the producer/manufacturer, not the end user. The essential element is "intended to be used in commerce." This means you can take an Invicta that looks like a Rolex and switch out the logos at home all you want, as long as you don't set up shop and pass it off as a real Rolex.

Please provide a source where anyone has been arrested for possessing a fake watch. It's more effective to hit the companies/manufacturers because they're the only ones actually committing a crime.

Not trying to be chitty, but the guy needs to know he won't be in any trouble for merely possessing a replica Patek.
Thank you for clearing this up for me. Rep'd

As far as time keeping goes it should be good if it's been serviced. Obviously all depends on age, model and overall condition/wear but generally they wont be much more maintenance than a modern piece. Just ensure it's had a recent service when purchasing or factor it in the price, also don't trust the depth rating, would definitely get them tested if you plan on exposing to water

He told me he'd be willing to make it black & gold but I wasn't sure how it would effect anything later if I went to sell it or trade up? Is the serial linked to its original blue/gold combo? Also the watch is a 1989 circ if that matters at all. $7k price

For a $6k I could get a Stainless and black sub and it would be a 2006. Because of the year and it being newer I am weighing this option heavily.

Just wanted to get some seasoned insight
I wouldn't buy the blue and swap the dial/bezel, I personally would advise to just hold off and pick up an original of the black if thats the one you want. However I would prefer the 2006 SS Sub over the 1989 2-tone Sub.

Also not entirely sure on that periods paperwork but I know there has been various iterations of warranty certificates with the model number on i.e 16613LB (blue), 16613LN (black). Like I say not sure if this will feature on this pieces documents but something to consider.

Spoiler!
On par with the cheapest DJ from chrono24, so I guess this isn't a bad deal if everything checks out.

$2250 for a full set DJ is definitely a good buy, though you can always offer him $2k and with some luck you'll have an even better deal!

After heavy thought I pulled the trigger on a 16610 (2005). A 11610 would have cost me $1300 more from the AD and didn't feel the ceramic was worth that at this time. He told me I could always trade up later. Very happy with my purchase. Dropping it off to them next week to get the band high polished.

what are some other better quality brands that I should look at under $1,000.00. Currently checking out Tissot and Hamilton in chronograph design, something silver or greyish/black.

any suggestions?

I agree with everything BigRangs said. Go for Tissot, Hamilton, Oris and Seiko on your budget.

Have a look at this Hamilton selection:

Maybe a Hamilton Jazzmaster Chrono?
