Shot on a hasselblad h2 100mm lens with kodak vision 3 500t film. Developed at littlefilmlab. I dont know why but i love film more than digital. Just really like what it does to the highlights and the dynamic range.
guess im one of those people who cant understand why people still shoot film *shrugs*

That is some serious glass. The look of it can't be duplicated with anything else. Sharpness and bokeh are incredible. If you don't mind lugging around 7lbs go for it.

You'll be able to throw out practically any distracting background.

You're not alone. Digital is utter garbage in the highlights. There is no smooth highlight rolloff, just harsh clipping. Go even 1/3 of a stop too far and suddenly it all goes to sh*t.

Shoot a middle gray target with the best DSLR sensor and see how much headroom you have in the highlights. Probably less than 3EV. It's a joke.

Fuji was the last manufacturer to address the problem with "Super CCD" a decade ago but sadly it didn't take off. Here we are in 2015 and if you want even 4 stops above middle gray, something your eye takes in comfortably, you've got to underexpose and then screw around with curves adjustments and a bunch of sliders to put the shadows and mid-tones back where they should be. With negative film you don't have that problem. Not to mention film has a lot more character. Digital is boring and sterile without manipulation.

For images like that, I won't mind carrying the weight at all. "No ragrets." Thanks for your help.

More details on this for anyone who's interested. Big deal we get more shadow detail with the latest technology — highlight latitude is pure garbage.

Here's a test comparing the D800E and the old Fuji S5 Pro with Super CCD. I left out the Canon which is just as bad as the Nikon.

D800E overexposed shot and the attempt to pull back detail in the highlights.

Hail the incredible dynamic range beast from Sony!

You see a lot of people talking up dynamic range in reviews and then you've got DXO telling us these cameras are good for 13-14EV. Good luck trying to pull anywhere near that kind of contrast range from a single RAW without a ton of noise. For practical purposes under ideal conditions you're limited to a little over half of that and 2/3 of it is in the shadows.

I think Fuji was on to something special there and it's a shame they couldn't continue developing it. The way it handled highlights and rendered skin tones is vastly superior to today's CMOS sensors. CMOS has the edge in power consumption and more importantly low noise at high ISO for shooting black cats in the dark and Milky Way fappery so it was goodnight sweet Super CCD prince.

I for one would love a full frame version of that sensor for landscapes, portraits, and studio work. I could always use another body with CMOS chit for high ISO.

A friend of mine is starting up a candy business and she asked me if i would take some shots of her product. Quickly realized that making stuff look appetizing was a lot harder than i expected, especially with rigging everything up on the fly. These were the only shots that i thought were halfway decent. any tips/criticisms?

That is pretty impressive. Exposing for the highlights would no longer be a thing if sensor makers could implement something like this (10 years later). That being said, for what I shoot, being able to pull out details in the shadows is mainly what I use. But every now and then it would be great to have that much detail in over exposed areas.

Took a photo of my dads arm. 35 years of hard labor and he's for sure got a story to tell from his scars. One of them near his wrist is where an artery got slit and he had to pinch it in order to stop the blood loss.

What about the new medium format iq250 back form phase one? I heard the dynamic range came out to around 14.5 stops no? Ill never be able to afford it but it looks like cmos is the new thing. When i shoot digital I just use my 5d m2. I was considering switching and upgrading to the D810 from nikon but it doesnt look like it shows that much of a improvement in highlights.

I know what you mean about the shadows but I think that's because we're forced to underexpose a lot to accommodate more than 2-3 stops of highlights (and that's nothing really). If you had more headroom in the highlights then you might not need to underexpose much at all.

I mean it only takes one stray streak of direct sunlight coming through some trees, window blinds, or falling onto the background when you're exposing for a subject in the shade or indoors to fire up the blinkies. Ditto for an overcast sky creeping into the frame ruining what would otherwise be a perfect exposure. Of course as a photographer you're supposed to be looking for that when you compose but it's always going to happen.

What Fuji seemed to have a handle on was a smooth roll-off of those highlights like negative film rather than harsh clipping. That's what really impressed me.

I can't see any manufacturer improving on what Fuji did with Super CCD 10 years ago. That crop sensor has a stop more DR than any new FF sensor from Canon. Quite remarkable. Not everyone needs high ISO. I would love a full frame sensor with that technology.

some recent bird shots

although first time wearing camo clothes and using flash extender. Was able to get closer than I normally would and the flash helped fill in the shadows pretty good.

Picked up a 6d 24-105 kit today. Guy at the photo store recommended the EF 50mm 1.8 STM over the 50mm 1.4 I was planning on getting so I grabbed that instead.

What a beast of a camera… I'm glad I held on to my 650d for so many years so I could really appreciate what this body has to offer. Can't wait to get it out into the field.

@obmas - figured i'd ask you since you own both the 70-200mm and 150-600 tamron.

Have you ever used the 150-600 from tamron for portraits? Ofcourse it's never gonna be as sharp as the 200mm 2.8, but that aside, how do you feel of using it on a FF(which i assume you use) for portraits? Does the range seem to huge.

Innn. Don't care for the VC but I love the new stuff Tamron is releasing. If they put out a good f/2.8 fisheye and wide angle zoom that accepts a front filter, my entire lens setup is going Tamron.

VC is definitely a bonus for my indoor weddings, especially with fast primes. I've been impressed by any Tamron stuff I have owned (especially now that I have the ability to microadjust if needed on my camera for 3rd party stuff). The look of these lenses seems a lot like the Sigma ART. I can see Tamron running away with it here.

Have you ever used the 150-600 from tamron for portraits? Ofcourse it's never gonna be as sharp as the 200mm 2.8, but that aside, how do you feel of using it on a FF(which i assume you use) for portraits? Does the range seem to huge.
you can get some pretty crazy background separation at 600mm, even at f/6.3. In good lighting conditions and on a tripod, i can get very sharp images on animals. But most my subjects are small animals. With people, you need to be pretty damn far lol.

I have a friend that wants to do a couples shoot soon. I will give it a shot.
