I used to be consumed by stress and was always angry and chit when I first moved to where I am, but I realized i'm investing in myself getting crazy work exp, saving money so I may as well just make this the best of it and live life how I think it should be done and my quality of life has gone up 300%. Always in a good mood, eating healthy, taking on every obstacle head on and never dodging it (make sure you get rest when ever you burn out obviously). I always see the best in people and constantly try my hardest to be as humble as I can even though I'm successful and have it pretty put together, it's unreal the amount of people that have opened up to me, confide in me, and the network of healthy relationships I have flourishing around me. Whenever you have an off day the people around you that you were there for when they were low jump to your side and get you back on track. Next thing you know you're laughing and working through what's on your plate the same way you helped others and what starts as a miserable day can be turned around in a matter of an hour or two. Positivity, kindness and staying thankful/humble/assertive has been the key to completely turning my life around.

I'm not religious, maybe spiritual a little.. I honestly just look at myself as an avatar of love, positivity and creation (helps a lot in my role as a boss and leader to treat myself as an equal to my men and go to bat with them through thick and thin in the chit we deal with out here).

Just be thankful for what you have, because this damn existence is temporary and if you look back at how much time you spent miserable it will make you wanna kill yourself. It's ok to feel low and process emotion but realize the best thing you can do is just grit and pour it on, tomorrow is another day brahs.
This is what I want to be. How did you do it? Sometime's I'll feel like this, but at most for a couple of hours, than it's back to being grumpy/irritable with a chit attitude.

I read the secret years ago and watched the film. Like op said I'm not sure if it's just the actual positive thinking that changes your life as you see things differently or if it's because you are thinking positive the universe is attracting you to better things. Id say it's more likely the former. However, I have had some very bizarre experiences and it makes me wonder.

In the moments when you are grumpy, you have to have the self realization to see what is happening and change that consciously. It's not easy, it's going to take work and studying books and a lot of time but it'll be worth it.

yep, agreed.

"the soul becomes dyed with the colour of its thoughts" - marcus aurelius

another thing that can influence your life significantly is MUSIC. music stays in your head for hours, even days. listening to sad LDAR songs pushes me just a little bit towards rotting with every passing chorus. i now listen to lamb of god, amon amarth and metallica - songs that make me want to CRUSH chit. i've never felt better. i think the most important thing is the ENERGY of songs, whatever songs make you like FUAAAAARRRRK!!!! you should listen to. think about zyzz, he was the goat, probably because he peaked every day on trance.

songs can help you brainwash yourself into a high energy state, people use them before squats, dls etc so imo it makes sense to apply that psychological arousal to other high test activities like entrepreneurship.

there's a time and place for listening to feels songs, and it's hardly ever srs. i truly believe people should be more selective about the songs they listen to. i understand this is based off an anecdote, so let me know if you brahs have found the same thing. the effect size is probably similar to just plainly thinking positive thoughts

Ayy! PM me, fellow Houston biker brah.

As for books, the OP posted a huge list. I'm reading like 90% of the books on that list this year too. But for starters, read Psycho Cybernetics. It should be pretty cheap on Amazon or at a local library.

I love me some Marcus Aurelius.

I also completely agree with the music. Lately I too have been into Amon Amarth! Twilight of the Thunder God is probably one of my favorite albums and it's my go-to album every day. That and Children of Bodom, Dillinger Escape Plan, Exmortus, Nekrogoblikon, and Dragon Force. Like you said, all have that "energy" that keeps me pumped as fuk.

Going to be completely honest with you, I haven't read it yet. However it will be one of the next 5 books I do read.

Read up on some of his philosophies and quotes, and maybe even his life. He was one of the Good Emperors of Rome, so yeah I imagine it's going to be englightening as most books like this are.

Anyone have any good recommendations for books about people like George Washington or Benjamin Franklin? Maybe an autobiography of some sort. Just any personal recommendations before I turn to Amazon/Google for advice would be nice. Thanks!

Marcus Aurelius x Meditations

is definitely worth the read. 10/10

Stop waiting, start reading.
The model for the application of your principles is the boxer rather than the gladiator. The gladiator puts down or takes up the sword he uses, the boxer always has his hands and needs only to clench them into fists.

I shrugged it off when you first posted this, but I think you're unto something here.

It's a conundrum, because to me depressing music is well … basically superior and more enjoyable.
However it's like candy, great while you listen to it but it breeds self-pity, loneliness & bitterness.

yeah i agree, it's emotional masochism, i don't know why sadness is enjoyable sometimes. it's a pretty toxic source of pleasure though and can be life ruining. it's a bit like wallowing in self pity or being a victim, easy to do but ultimately you're only ****ing up your own life and wasting away moments that could have been enjoyed. you never get back those moments, it's crazy how we are almost happy to spend time feeling anything other than happiness

Eckhart Tolle has a metaphor called 'the pain body', and says that it's an emotional energy within us that wants to be fed by feeling pain (via self hatred, complaints, grudges, etc), and/or helping others to feel pain (physical pain, humiliation, insecurity, fear, etc).

I recommend listening to the audiobook the power of now (I found trying to read the book boring, but came alive when Eckhart was narrating).

I have noticed, practising what Eckhart calls observing the pain body, that it likes to be fed by watching and participating in conflict. Which is something I realized I was compulsively drawn to.

Other spiritual/religious teachers, say similar things using different language/metaphors, like this guy called Geoff Thompson…

He used to be a very violent man, who became a renowned martial arts instructor and writer, who talks about how he realized that violence was within him…

How do you find direction in life? I'm 26 (stats are wrong) and still have no idea what I want to do with my life. People always say follow your passions but the few passions that I do have, don't really have career options. They're all sport / lifting related.

I finally finished it yesterday. Yeah, it's worth a read. Research which translation you're going to buy before you buy it, makes a world of difference. Altogether, great book on the thoughts of stoicism.

What are the best books and why? What have you learned the most from them?
OP posted a huge list of books m8… Go through that list and find ones that SOUND INTERESTING TO YOU. Those are the best books, the ones you're motivated to read and learn from. As always, I recommend Psycho-Cybernetics - I learned the most from this book so far. I learned that if you can change your self-image through self-awareness, then you can take action to correcting it in a direction you want to go. You want to be CEO $10k/day? You gotta act like it and think big. Then break down that goal into daily goals as best you can. And then stick to them.

I have the translation by Martin Hammond, haven't seen the other translations but his is pretty good (penguin classics publisher).

What I like about the meditations is that it was never intended to be a book. Marcus wrote them as a sort of.. reminder/note for himself to reflect on here and there. So when you're reading it, you're getting an honest look into the mind of him and the kinds of thoughts that he tried to hold to because the only audience it was meant for was himself. I don't know the exact details but someone came across them after his death and published it. When reading it, keep in mind he's really talking to himself.
The model for the application of your principles is the boxer rather than the gladiator. The gladiator puts down or takes up the sword he uses, the boxer always has his hands and needs only to clench them into fists.
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

"I didn't know anything about bodybuilding I was just doing this for happiness and I don't want to take the happiness away. For me it is meditation, a ritual between my mind and body" -Victor Richards
