Skip the Ruger, they have an inferior barrel and Ruger cut corners on other things like bolt lugs that are actually in spec.

The DD has probably the best barrel you can buy without it being a stainless match barrel. It also has a full length free float rail and upgraded furniture. DD also comes with an H buffer instead of a carbine buffer.

Basically, the $400 discount removes the brand name premium.

i ended up picking up a stripped palmetto lower from a buddy.

i should be getting the lower parts kits on friday, cant wait to put it all together. it'll end up being $150 for a lower with magul MOE grip and stock. not bad IMO.

i'll take my time to find a complete upper later.

Just a good benchmark, especially with the price of guns through the floor. You can put a quality red dot on an AR for $400, and a much lighter weight one for about $600. (http://shop.opticsplanet.com/aimpoin...RoCOjcQAvD_BwE)

Magnified Optics are pretty affordable right now with Primary Arms and Vortex offering 1-6x scopes at around $275, and 1-8x scopes at around $350. Obviously, Trijicon offerings and the nicer 3gun offerings are going to get into the $1000 range for 1-4/6/8. With higher power magnification the prices are boundless but you can get a quality scope that will do everything the rifle is capable of at around $1000.

Clarity of glass, ruggedness, ability to hold zero, return to zero if adjusting turrets (EDIT).

I'm in the low-end camp. None of my optics are more than $100, but I tend to only buy them on sale. They seem to hold up fine for what I need them to do.

im a fan of lower powered optics and scout type scopes, which are relatively cheaper compared to whats out there. The Vortex 2-7 scout scope is only $~150(i've seen them for $120), a 1-6 Strike Eagle can be had for less than $300. not bad IMO. i'm usually only trying to shoot out to 200-300 yds MAX so these magnifications are perfect for that range.

No license is required, although you'll need to have the lower receiver (or any complete rifle) shipped to an FFL dealer. They'll run a background check on you, and you can go home with your gun. You will need some kind of gov't issued ID, but no "gun license"

Hinterland Outfitters also has some pretty good options for customizing your own AR-15. Good selection of uppers and lowers and pretty decent pricing for a lot of different rifles.
