Take something super common like Afib. It increases your risk of a stroke. So we have a sit down discussion with a patient and go through their risk factors for a stroke and also having a serious bleed from anticoagulation for the Afib. It's a shared-decision making process where you have risks and benefits. You can also choose to just take aspirin for example.
An AI can tell me which anticoagulant I should use and for how long etc (which I already know anyway). But I'm going through a decision making model with the patient so they can make an informed decision.
Are you suggesting that the AI will be communicating as well? Or is someone with less training going to do the talking, then when the patient asks a question - they're going to input that into the AI? No matter how you phrase it, your model is grossly inefficient and logistically absurd.

14 year old girl who wants contraception for example. She wants the pill, the mom wants her to have an injection but the doc knows the implant is the way to go. How would the AI go about doing that? And how does it know the age of consent and and capacity in that specific country its in?

so in your example is this "robot doctor" completely autonomous or is more like programmed with a human companion? it can sift through the information but ultimately it will be the "human doctors" choice?
lets go with completely autonomous ai doctor. what if you get a patient with a very low survival rate. idk.. lets say something just has 99.9% odds of not making it or lets say something with <50% survival rate. is the autonomous robot with no sense of morality going to make the decision to end a human life or, again, will that be handed off to different staff? what about the crazy success stories of people overcoming extremely huge odds?
and then i guess you could introduce problems like.. well, if the human doctors aren't handling that, then how involved could they be regarding their patient's lives . if they aren't the ones doing the action and the
imo, there are very, very steep hurdles. not even broaching the tons of problems i already mentioned within the thread
i would agree though that technology is improving and there are very specific tasks that "ai" could be programmed to perform - however, the human aspect will not be eliminated

As for the question regarding doctors I'm just pointing out that basically all the components exist in at least rudimentary form.
Picture in 100 years of refining technologies, putting technologies together to make new things.

And to the topic of the thread I think that it is possible that what has been described here as AI could be helpful tool I personally can't see it completely replacing human doctors.
Why?
Because the patients themselves are human- imperfect, imprecise, forgetful, dishonest, etc. And because I think that AI isn't likely to have the EQ if you will to read human patients the way that a good human doctor can. There are plenty of humans that are bad at picking up subtle cues. See: many miscers

I read the whole thing.
So far haven't seen anyone ask if it is a good idea to create AI that are expert at treating human physical ailments.
How do we guarantee that these all knowing all remembering medical wizards don't become corrupted in some way to use that knowledge against us?

i think people are largely looking at the results of the computations and everything the brain produces and are looking at that as "not complex" when the real complexity is all the underlying mechanisms which create these results. the brain is massively complexat least you can largely be sure, OK ill give you this may be with the understanding that the doctor is vetted, that (given the doctor has been vetted and passed all restrictions/requirements/ etc.) , that the doctor knows and understands humans. thus he has the humans best interest at heart
you could say that artificial intelligence will at one point develop "morality"; however, right now you have to give credit to its sheer infancy regarding that
that is an interesting conflict within humanity itself, not even introducing a completely separate entity that is a non-sentient species.

if you have nothing that guarantees there is no bias what's the point? It's fine until your AI starts excluding treatment for whatever reason and there is no failsafe on that.

Biology is a beautiful thing, and life itself is much smarter than computers. For example, the brain is both hardware and software, whereas there is an inherent different in computers. The world’s most powerful supercomputer, the K from Fujitsu, computes four times faster and holds 10 times as much data. And of course, many more bits are coursing through the Internet at any moment.
