My Neighbor picked up an old Fender Acoustic at a yard sale and asked me to restring and tune it. Ten bucks he paid for the guitar. I grabbed a beer and headed over with a new set of strings within the hour, I always have extra strings on hand as you probably do.

He brings it out, broken low E of course. It's black and pretty but the saddle had been glued back on at some point, with quite a bit of epoxy or something. I didn't have much hope, so I just stuck a low e on and tried to tune it, strings were too far gone. He kept bringing me beers with the idea I was going to resurect this thing.

I completely restrung it, played and stretched, played and stretched and after an hour it held a tune. Whoever glued the saddle back on did a nice job. Still in tune now.

I wouldn't even have typed the story but the fender acoustic had all the the tuning pegs on the north side of the headstock, like there electrics. I'm not a Fender expert but I think that guitar is over 40 years old?
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

Likewise. The only issues with it would be it's prone to cracking in very dry climates so in that case you'd want to be oiling it once or twice a year to be safe and when refretting it can chip more pulling frets so it requires more care but if you go stainless it's a non issue. Other than that the cork sniffing tonewood crew would say it's a lot brighter than rosewood but in any guitar with humbuckers I can't see that being a negative.

While you can still get it for custom builds the reason you don't see it being used much in production guitars these days is it's more expensive and harder to find dark, uniform pieces of it without streaking. Each to their own but I'm a big fan of ebony with no inlays. I'll take it every time. Inlays are probably still an important visual aid for those who do a lot of tapping high up the neck but otherwise I love that clean look like a classical guitar.

Ebony> Rosewood.

I think my older guitar had a rosewood fretboard and I remember it was a magnet for gunk and grime. I remember it was always getting peanut butter traces all over it (I ate fair bit of peanut butter as a kid).

Ebony has a tighter grain and I think feels better on the fingers. Easier to keep clean, and rosewood has some horizontal striations you can sort of feel with your fingers.

If you want to shred and squeal, I think ebony is best and it works great for any canonical shredder like Ibanez or Jackson or ESP. But rosewood might still be the option for a creamy and full Les Paul style sound.
Back off, Warchild.

Seriously.

Good point about the feel with the tight grain and rosewood being a gunk magnet.

I'd rather Rocklite/Ebanol than rosewood if ebony was no longer an option.

I have a few cheaper guitar that I bought to mod. They have that newer lighter colored rosewood that look dull and dry. I think I'm going try a few light coats of thinned out tru oil on one of them and see what happens. Should darken them up to some extent and give them a little sheen. It should also get some wear through divots that would give it a reliced look over time

I only like Rosewood if it's that rich dark chocolate type of color. I prefer Ebony mainly because of the tight grain, color, and smoother feel under my fingers. Idk how much influence it has on the sound of the guitar if any at all. Guitar players are a hive minded bunch when it comes to tone woods and generally accepted schools of thought.

Got my first guitar around '87. Can't really sing and play. Every time I've ever tried it, my brain went into shutdown mode and everything stopped LOL

I got my first guitar when I was 10 but I was self taught and didn't know what the fukk I was doing until about 20/21 when I started taking private lessons. I'm much more adept and have a deeper understanding of theory now but still not at a level I'm satisfied with. Been playing the instrument almost 20 years now.

Howdy bhicks….

I started playing drums in high school.
I started on guitar during my last year in the military which was 1969 and played live for about a decade..
I can play lead but I don't feel proficient at it so I have a lead guitarist collaborator that I've worked with for about 5 years.
So…I'm more of a song writer/rhythm guitar player. (links in my sig)

"Four months ago"….you should be developing your callouses pretty well by now.
My recommendation?…. play a little bit every day .

Stick with it and good luck on your quest to improve.

Carry on….

I figured you'd post that solo and I will acknowledge he sounds pretty good there. I always liked that part where he pulls his left thumb from around the neck to fret the pedal note.

But that's it. That's literally the apotheosis of Jake E Lee.

Interesting name choice in "Simplifier." I wonder how it stacks up to a clean amp modeling pedal like the Iridium and Walrus ACS1 when you run some kind of drive pedal into it.

I use an ACS1 and it sounds exactly like what it's modeling. No latency or weird feel to it but then I don't crank the gain on it — it's super clean. If I have a real Princeton or Deluxe to plug into then I'd simply switch the pedal off. I've got it all wired up for stereo so I can run two different amps (e.g. Fender and Vox) if I want but I just sum to mono into a 1x12 at home.

I saw a video of him at NAMM maybe 3 years ago and he looked like he'd dropped a few pounds or at least plateaued. I'd imagine sitting in a workshop hunched over amp chassis all day working late into the night testing stuff only stopping for takeaway wouldn't be great for the waistline.

What he doesn't know about Marshall circuits isn't worth knowing.

It wouldn't appeal to today's tiktok crowd with the attention span of a goldfish hence the low subscriber count but Tone Talk is a goldmine of great information if you're a seasoned gear nerd tone chaser. I've been on board since day one when they interviewed Grover Jackson. Most of the interviews run for 2 hours. You've got to soak this stuff up slowly for it to sink in anyway. Even your boy Schmoe Satriale chewed the fat about gear.
