Well, the 62gr green tip stuff has a poor track record due to its only real wounding mechanism is yaw. But most of the other stuff will f’ck your sh*t up.

55gr FMJ traveling at 3,200+ FPS does an excellent job on soft target exotic game. For most hunting applications, tho, 62gr bonded soft points are superior. Heavy OTM is good, too, but loses some advantages due to being less barrier blind.

.223 is less forgiving than any heavier rifle round when it comes to poor shot placement, like penetrating a scapula or other large bones, but is a very capable deer round. Contrary to fudd lore.

Blaming the bullet is classic hunter denial.

I don’t pay much attention to fudd lore, YouTubers, or chat room edge lords. I only speak for my own personal observations. If I don’t know anything about a topic, I keep my damn mouth shut.

Lol @ .556 for deer round. Muh shot placement. Yea I could kill a deer with a .22LR to the head too…from 50yrds…maybe too. Imagine passing up a trophy bc you need to worry about shot placement and can’t take a proper lung/heart shot . The mental gymnastics

Still haven’t heard an advantage from <300m over 300 blk but I can (and have) name several where 10.3” 300blk it’s a better option. And has more than one use. Don’t be poor

I don’t believe that shot placement is mental gymnastics, I simply believe it just depends on how you choose to hunt a deer.

Here in Missouri, there is multiple seasons that will definitely require you to get inside of 100 yards and maximize your shot placement. For example, slug season, bow season, and black powder season. Arguably, a dedicated 5.56 hunting round inside of 100 yards would be a superior killing mechanism to those just mentioned.

We’ve had a guy in here take deer with 5.56, and during the dressing process take pics to show that the vitals were absolutely pulverized.

I’ve taken a deer at +/- 20 yards with a .357 Magnum using 120gr HP State Patrol loads. The shot placement had to be perfect on that one.

Yes, you can still own any mags and can easily buy "mag kits" from literally any gun store in the state.

Also yes, they are drafting all sorts of AWB's. Not looking forward to it.

cucked Canada firearm owner here and I agree. The best case scenario for us is the current anti-gun laws trying to get passed get thrown out if the Conservative's win and we get to go back to 2019 cucked levels where I can buy/sell handguns again and finally get an AR15.

Although I always wonder why America has so many gun laws when they have the second amendment. How has the ATF's ability to just make up whatever they want not been challenged and banned by the supreme court?

I follow some hunting specific forums and it has been interesting to me watching the debates on using 223 for deer sized game over the last 10 to 15 years. I started out as a skeptic, but I've seen too many field reports from guys taking pictures during the field dressing to think a 223 is not a viable option. Just about everyone that tries them with good bullets says they work and the only detractors seem to be those that haven't tried. This year I packed a 223 for the first time, because I wanted to see for myself. Unfortunately, we had a lot going on with the family during the deer season and I only got out once and only saw does. Maybe next year. I wouldn't limit my shots to 100 yards either. As an example, 77 TMK are reported to reliably expand down to around 1,900 fps. That will get me to 450 yards with my atmospherics (+-4,500 ft). If I had some safety factor and want to keep impact velocity above 2,000 fps, I can still get to 350 yards - a pretty long shot for most people.

Damn that is some hardcore registration that sucks

Move to murica man

And it used to be the PPU 75gr BTHP Match .223 was some of the most accurate for your dollar on the market (and decent likely for defense too) but prices have gone up

PPU is decent ammo. They've been making it a long time and I especially trust the reliability of their stuff in standard NATO cartridges like 5.56 and 9x19

Nothing super about it but it works
