Anyone here use the Sony FE 70-200 f4???

I want a 70-200 and the GM version is too expensive but this version has some reviews questioning the build quality

I've recently started to get into photography/photo editing since I'm a pretty big traveler. I was wondering what you all would recommend to a noob who mostly wants to take pictures of nature and cities as far as camera/lenses go. I don't want to go crazy expensive, because I'm just a hobbyist, but what's reasonable starting point that will allow me to take nice pictures and also not be so expensive that I'll have buyer's remorse if I don't get as into photography as I think I will?

500 bucks? i guess that could be "mid" dslr but also fairly entry level. and thats for the camera body

lenses you can buy used, but they also can get super expensive.. also depends on the camera you buy. dx vs. fx (cropped sensor vs. full framed sensor). full frame is generally what professionals use

you could also go mirrorless but i have no experience with that

i have a nikon d5300 which is entry to mid level dslr. and i was blown away by how good the photos are. taking a picture of my work boots you literally see every speck of dirt/ dust around, blemishes in the leather and literally every single fray in the lacing. all fairly new cameras will blow old cameras out of the water
editing programs can also be expensive. could get photoshop on its own for 20/ month. im sure there are free versions but prob not as good
but adobes creative cloud, which is more than just photoshop is 52/month

i would go entry level dslr because i feel even if you dont take it up ridiculously, youll like the photos when you do decide to use it

this said, check out the used market. You can find some seriously great bodies for dirt cheap these days. (I run a FB resale group with 35k+ in member count, and some great deals float through us almost daily)

Just ordered a new lens! canon 85mm 1.2. Will be here by the weekend, cannot wait! I think I am going to work a lot on portraits moving forward. Also ordered a monolight and already have some ofc strobes to compliment it should I want to do a more elaborate setup. But I am thinking quick/easy/mobile setups is what I need to have dialed in. Still need to find a good portable softbox.

anyways, snagged a pic while walking around between meetings.

agreed. I realized this too late, too.
When I was getting my insurance in order, they asked me to total the investments and i went "eh, maybe 8k", but they needed an itemized list. Needless to say, 8k was not nearly close.
Just hope the wife doesn't sell stuff for the amount I told her I paid for it.

I am in a market for a new tripod head. Nothing super fancy, but would like a ballhead. Any decently priced recommendations?

What's the heaviest lens you'll be using with it?

I'd go for the largest ball diameter you can afford because it'll be smoother which makes a difference when you're trying to make small adjustments with a heavy lens not to mention it will feel more secure.

Just going by gear I've seen you talk about before I'd suggest a load capacity of 40lbs+.

An "Arca compatible" quick release is definitely the way to go instead of some proprietary attachment like Manfrotto uses. Then you can use an L-bracket and conveniently switch from landscape and portrait without having to flop the ball head which forces you to recompose and also throws the weight off center. I also have a Kirk Arca lens foot on my 70-200 2.8 which mounts straight into the Arca clamp on my tripod head. This is really convenient and looks like this.

Anyway Induro looks like a solid brand for the money and the BHD2 (1.3lb / 54mm / 40lbs ) and BHD3 (1.9lb / 64mm / 55lb) would be my picks for around $200.

Spending less than that to support the gear you're using probably wouldn't be the best idea in the long run. I mean it might get the job done initially but then you'll probably want to upgrade to something better and that's money wasted that could have gone toward getting a decent one. Just my 2 cents.

I really don't see myself mounting anything heavier than 200 f2 on it.

Good info, thank you!

Is there a reason you chose to go with a foot replacement instead of the plate?

That f/2 beast + D850 w/ grip would have to be getting close to 10lbs. They say as a rule the load capacity should be 2x what you're putting on it but I'd double that again.

Feels a lot more secure than screwing a little plate onto the stock one. Never have to worry about anything slipping or breaking off.

No regrets when buying US made parts from RRS and Kirk that will probably outlive me. I tried a "Sunwayfoto" panning clamp as a backup once which looked okay but wobbled and flexed when I loaded it up with all my gear. $100 wasted because I never used it again. That stuff is probably fine for a small camera and lens but I'd never trust it with anything heavy/expensive.

This is the one I use . $80 might seem expensive but it's machined much better than the original Nikon part which probably costs just as much. I've been using it for 10 years now with no issues so I'd agree with the 50+ 5 star reviews. Here's what it looks like both up close and in the real world. Cameras come and go but I could be using all that tripod gear 20 years from now.

Spoiler!

Did a little more research for you. Sirui K-30X and K-40X tick all the boxes for $130-160.

My only concern with cheaper ball heads made in China is how compatible the Arca clamp really is. Ideally you'd be able to go into a store and try one out or buy from somewhere that gives you enough time to try it out and return it.

I went the budget route with an aluminium Slik tripod and Manfrotto head for a few years and while the results were fine I found myself struggling with them. I wanted a light tripod over 6ft (CF) with twist locks vs. flip locks that kept getting jammed and be able to strip the whole thing down and clean it at the end of the day. I wanted a ball head with a friction control that was smooth so I could make small adjustments. It's not like you need this stuff to take a great photo, any cheap tripod weighed down will get the job done, but the process becomes less frustrating.

I'd never tell anyone to go out and spend a lot of money on this stuff but it's definitely a good feeling when you only have to spend it once.

I really don't know if I trust chinese stuff with my babies.
I'm ok with spending a few $$ more.

Just snagged a Feisol CT-3402 for 150, so might as well those savings into a head.

now to decide whether I want to get a 35 or 24mm 1.4 prime..decisions decisions.

This. My 1325 gitzo and acratech ballhead isn't really enough to even handle a D800 with 70-200 2.8 @ 200mm.

With tripods, buy cheap buy twice has never been more true. Boring a fuk to buy but you only cry once and they hold their value better than anything else.

It can be tough to pull the trigger at the time when you could spend that money on a new lens but like you said they hold their value and if you buy the right gear you won't need to replace it.

I used a Manfrotto 405 geared head for a while which required a $100 Arca compatible clamp for the Manfrotto RC4 quick release so it could work with my camera's L-bracket. That was easily the worst $550 I ever spent on photography. Had to spend that money all over again on a decent ball head but 7 years on it's still working flawlessly.

No idea what I was thinking when I bought that monstrosity. Gears developed slop after a few months and wouldn't hold their position which defeats the purpose of using a geared head. Took up way too much space in a suitcase, wouldn't fit in any bag, and weighs nearly 5lbs. For all that bulk it has a 16lb load capacity vs. the 110 lbs of the ball head I replaced it with which weighs 1.2 lbs.

Spoiler!

Lol I bought this huge, heavy manfrotto horror trying to save money

A friend bought it off me and it was stolen from his car and used to break into another car used as a battering ram.

Awesome. At least it was good for something.

Foques the main thing I wanted to get across is with cheaper ball heads you typically either have them fully clamped in place or you have to loosen them right off to recompose then lock it back in place. Rinse, repeat until the composition is right, horizon is level, etc. This can be frustrating and difficult with heavier gear. On a good ball head you can set the friction dial for the sweet spot so you can move the camera without it flopping.

Doing it one handed here to illustrate the point.

The hard drive in my 2013 MacBook Pro died last weekend (RIP), sadly lost a lot of edited JPEGs I made into albums but luckily RAWs are safe of course. Gives me a nice chance to revisit my catalog and make some fresh edits on a lot of older work (LR catalog wasn't backed up, I know).

Genius Bar at Apple couldn't fix it and since 2013 is "vintage" they couldn't send it out for service, so I bit the bullet and upgraded to a new 15" Touch Bar MacBook Pro (2.2GHz 6 core i7, 16GB RAM) and **** me this thing is fast. Exporting with my settings from Lightroom to Photoshop takes 3 seconds, I've already power edited through nearly an entire 2000 picture wedding this week.

Also catching up on uploading to Flickr, just reupped my pro subscription because of the new limits going into effect.

I replaced the Hard Drive in my 2012 MacBook Pro with a 2tb SSD. It's worlds difference in terms of speed. I also upgraded the RAM from 4gb to 16gb. So now I'm able to have 100 windows open.

WHOA! ok, definitely want that. Thank you!
