From CES show at the Nikon stand. All the cries of 'should only be a simple firmware update' may be answered and more as Nikon clearly plan to upgrade the new bodies through life. If eye af is as good as Sony it might well just push me over the edge…

Feels like standing there. Don't know if it's changed but when I was there they only announced what platform the train was on after it arrived. Lots of fun when you're carrying a pair of 70lb suitcases.

I got my eyes on the Sony 24-105 f4 and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8

Should I just get the 24-105 since it covers the Tamrons range? I'm not sure if the lower aperture would be worth it. My main use is landscapes and I think the f4 would be enough since I usually keep it around f8-11. I do want to try night shooting soon so maybe the 2.8 would be useful then. Any thoughts?

What type of “night shooting?” If you’re thinking still life or architecture landscapes etc you won’t really worry about FStop, just longer exposure while using a tripod.

Sony 24-105 f4 is my main lens.

I'd say go with the Tamron. The 24-105mm is a great lens, all of my recent pics in this thread is with it, but I'm craving a little more bokeh, and it's heavy.

If I could go back, I'd get the Tamron 28-75mm, and the new G-Master 24mm 1.4

Just general night shooting in cities or towns where a lower aperture would be useful. As far as landscapes go I'm talking about mountains and stuff

Interesting. The 24-105 seems like the perfect single lens to bring on backpacking trips, which is why I'm eyeing it. I might just end up getting both. I have a 24-70 kit lens but I'm selling it

Which 24-70 lens do you have now, and why would you sell that to buy the Tamron 28-75? If you do landscape, you may want to consider going wider instead of longer. I personally use the Tamron 15-30 F2.8 G Series. I also have the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 and love them both.

Here are some of the homes I've done recently with the 15-30

Hmmm yeah it might be better to have the lower aperture available if you're looking at more than just landscapes etc. I have a 17-40mm f4 that I use for landscape and hoped to be able to use it in more settings than just that, but the f4 can be a pain in the dink unless you're focusing on still life and can have a long exposure. I use my 24-70 f2.8 a whole lot more for walking around because of low light situations.

That said, I might start walking with a prime with a 1.2 or 1.4, and sacrifice the zoom aspect.

Mainly just to upgrade to a better lens.

I think 24 would be wide enough for me. Did a lot of backpacking last summer with my 16-35 and I usually shot in the twenties. I could've gotten better pics if I had more zoom which is why I'm looking at the 105.

I had the sigma 24-105 for a while and liked it.

The F4 should be enough especially outdoors. I rarely shoot wide open unless I'm doing astro, which you would want something faster that f2.8 (ideally) and wider.

Hasn’t changed much, they still tell you which platform about 10 minutes before it leaves in typical Italian fashion. Luckily the train to the airport has always been at the same one.

Nisi is very good but expensive. I havent used their circular ND's but i have owned their square filter system which was terrific, i did later sell them cos i cbfd setting them up.

Ive been using Hoya Pro ND (4 and 10 stop) for a few years now and ive got no complaints. Quite affordable which makes replacing them easy cos i always seem to scratch them.

I would just avoid the cheap $10ish ND's you get on ebay.
Certain brands of ND's have colour casting but it can be easily fixed in post.

Another question.. Dom, what is your opinion on 24mm vs 35mm 1.4 nikkors?

Everything I read seems that 35mm would be a logical choice.. but the performance of the 24 keeps my ears perked up.

Depends on what you want to do…

I picked up a 28mm when I had a crop body to help with tighter shooting situations. With FF, I get a **** ton in with that lens. I would see with one is the tightest, most crisp, least distortion and go with that one.

It depends on what you'll be shooting with it.

For landscapes a fast wide opens up possibilities for Milky Way and aurora photography but for people I'd go with the 35 1.4. I'd say 90% of my landscape shots were taken @ 24mm but I never pulled the trigger on the 1.4 because I already had the 24-70 and PC-E. It was really tempting and still is.

With how good software is these days how it'd be so easy to shoot handheld 3 shot panos in portrait with a 35 in a pinch to get a wider FOV of a 24mm when you need it. Get the subject in the frame then fire a frame either side or two to the left/right depending on the composition, eyeballing around 40-50% overlap (this is easy with gridlines enabled in the VF) then let the stitching software work its magic in post. The more I think about it for portraits, commercial work, weddings, 35mm would be my pick for a fast prime to go with the 85.

It'll be on my d850.. maybe sometimes, on my d750.

I was contemplating going the 24 1.4, and 35 f2, instead.

Landscapes shooting is definitely one of the things i'm looking to do, but I also shoot bands and a wide angle faster than 24-70 would be neat.
but you do make a compelling argument. I suppose i'll pick up the 35 1.4, and get the 24 some time in the future.

@Dominik,

the head has arrived yesterday. Holy ****, it is way bigger than I imagined! works great, i'm not a huge fan of the mounting style, but I think it is because I am used to my older head (the plate slides into the mount, and locks there). I'm not very good with changes.
35 arrives next week.

Awesome news. The next step is an L-bracket and if you use a grip one that is made for the grip. You'll wonder how you lived without one. Quickly switch from landscape to portrait just sliding it in and locking it — no flopping the ball head to the side.

Jump to around 5 mins in.

Go into the Custom Setting menu and under "g Movie" there should be an option (g4?) to assign video recording to the shutter button.

Once that is enabled any compatible remote should be able to trigger it.
