Another benefit to RRS is their customer service. Gitzo makes quality products but if you ever have a problem, I've heard horror stories about trying to get in touch with them. And if you pay that much money for a product, you are certainly paying for peace of mind that customer service will take good care of you.

I also like having spikes when shooting on rocks which are hidden under rubber feet when not needed. It's also easy to strip the whole thing down and quickly clean it so it always feels like new.
I have the gigantic 5 series (5543) combined with the RRS BH-55 head. It is ROCK SOLID, and great when conditions call for it, however the combo weighs in at around 9-10 pounds so it can certainly be a bit of an issue for long backpacking trips. And it isn't even so much the weight as its the size/angle of the platform where the ballhead attaches. Although it is largely what helps with overall tripod stability, it also makes it a bit awkward when it is in your pack and you are scrambling off-trail.

I've heard the same and agree. There's a Gitzo parts site which has everything I need if something fails — I'd never waste my time contacting them. I don't think RRS made a tall tripod when I got mine otherwise I would have seriously considered one. I use their pano gear, clamps, etc. Great company.

Haha, that is a great way to describe it actually. I mean, when it is planted, your camera just doesn't move - which is absolutely fantastic for inclement weather and seascapes.

However, since I purchased my Really Right Stuff combo (TVC-24L + BH-40), I really haven't found a scenario that it hasn't been able to handle. So, in some ways, I wish I would have gone with it first…

For example, will you be shooting often in stormy high wind scenarios? If not, then you can very likely get away with a lighter travel tripod. If you will be shooting in windy conditions regularly then you may want/need to invest in a more professional grade / heavier tripod.

I actually own three different tripods and they each have their own unique use cases. When I shoot seascapes (where I'll potentially be in the waves) or high wind situations, I will use my Gitzo Systematic (which is a monster). The problem is, it is very heavy so when we are backpacking for long trips it can get kind of heavy. In longer hiking situations, I use my RRS TVC-24L which is about half the weight but still very sturdy. For my lighter gear, I have a Benro travel tripod which is very light but not ideal for supporting my heavier Nikon D850.

Also factor into the equation that you'll want a good ballhead to go with your leg setup. I'm a very big fan of RRS, although they are quite spendy - but easily the best I've ever used.

Oh, one last point - even if you have a lower quality tripod and head, you can still get away with it if you plan accordingly. For example, using things exposure delay timers in combination with hands free shutter releases can really help keep things stable while the exposure is being taken. I've successfully shot my D850 and huge 70-200mm lens on my travel Benro tripod this way before. You have to be more careful, but it can work on calm days…
I probably won't be using a tripod in high winds. Just something that is light, packable and dependable. I'd probably only use it for landscapes on uneven terrain, shooting in low light situations in urban settings, and general usage in my house. So nothing crazy.

With that budget it makes sense to go with aluminum. This combination for just over $200 looks solid. The first thing I'm looking at is the load capacity and then max height, etc. Personally I wouldn't be loading up a tripod with $3500 of gear if it's not good for at least 20lbs.
Thanks for providing the links. I'll look into all of them and compare. I don't mind buying the ball head separately if needed. Half the reason I want a new tripod is to protect my gear, insurance in a way. Doesn't make sense to have expensive gear but mount it on a cheap tripod.

QUESTION:

I wanna get a fullframe camera, but dont wanna spend more than 2k as i dont make a living with photography anymore.

I stumbled upon the Sony alpha 7 mark 1 which i can get for crazy cheap, 700$ with the kit 28-70

Is the alpha 7 mark 1 still worth buying in 2019 or is the tech just outdated. This would be my first mirrorless, i used to shoot on the 5D mark 1 and i loved it.

AF on the a7 is pretty slow but would still be a perfectly capable camera.
Why full frame outta curiosity?

If you are up to it there is a small tweak that could go a long way imo.
On the right side the red and white race track element is perfect. It leaves some breathing space with the car, and goes off frame at the bottom which creates a very nice perspective dynamic line.

One the left side however, it aligns perfectly with the car with no breathing space which kills the impression of perspective and makes the image less readable. Also at the bottom it does not go off frame and the pointy part is distracting.

The simple yet dramatic tweak:

- make sure your car is perfectly straight using guides (it seems to me it already is)
- duplicate your layer
- flip your layer horizontally to have the perfect side on the left
- mask everything aside the good side on the left on the new layer
- crop the bottom of the image concrete part a bit (slightly too much of it)

Feel like giving it a shot? I can do it for you to illustrate my point if you wish

all very nice shots!
Too bad that the drone overall image quality is a little lacking though, because the point of views are awesome.
The camera limitations are showing in the dynamic range and the details are a bit splotchy, but then I bet the ones with good cameras are extremely expensive…

I went on a 2,200+ mile road trip from CT to Daytona for the Rolex 24 a couple of weeks ago. I stayed up for the entire 24 hour long race lol. It rained sooo much at the end (first time they ever had 2 red flags in one race). My feet were soaked and cold for hours, I was sleep deprived, over caffeinated, etc. but still had such an amazing time. 10/10 trip, I hope I can go again next year.

I have tons of shots, but these are some of my favorite ones.

This is when the content aware fill tool can come in very handy.
Especially since the latest update where you can paint over the car and tell photoshop not to use the car to fill up the desired area.
It can help avoid repeating patterns that come with the clone stamp tool.
The stamp tool can be the only solution in some cases but for a lot of work the content aware fill tool is much faster and much less work.

There is a cord that hooks to your remote shutter release. It's not hooked up in the image I posted.

The season is finally back! The winter was quiet, but the work is starting to roll back in! A few shots from some recent listings.

For those that are looking to photography for a career, I would definitely suggest you consider real estate work as part of that path.
