It seems some of you wanted to know more about this place, me, and the history behind it.

First, to clear up some misconceptions: Obnoxiousbrutes is not really new. It’s roughly the same age as the other forum spin-offs. The ability to actually log in was only added in autumn 2024, and very few people joined at first, as expected. In total, I’ve been “working” here a bit on and off for over 18 months. Here is a link to the first announcement I made on miscreformed. Few people took notice.

Another question was about financing. Yes, OB has roughly 10× the content of newmisc, but that doesn’t mean it costs 10× as much to run (thankfully!). OB started as a library/archive and only much later did I decide to make it more forum-like. I decided to open it up relatively late, mainly because some users requested it. Of course, I wanted some users to join too. I even have a post here where I basically say I am “raking this graveyard…”.

On the technical side: There’s zero reason a simple web forum should be slow with modern hardware. A single CPU core today is basically a supercomputer. The reason apps like forums or even Microsoft Teams are slow is usually that developers aren’t given the time to do things properly. I’ve taken my time building this forum, for myself mostly, and it runs smoothly, and cheaply, on very modest hardware.

Some of you asked why I didn’t contribute more to newmisc. I thought I did! I had two multi-page threads about this project, one of which I updated regularly. I also answered questions in PMs. True, I didn’t post much beyond that, but I was never a big poster. I keep my old misc username private, but 99% of you wouldn’t recognize me anyway.

A bit about me: I joined the bb.com forums way back and even got training advice from Ya Boy Dave himself! I’m probably older than most of you, work in IT (shocker right!), and am married with kids.

When newmisc closed, it came as a surprise to me just like anyone else. I was tinkering with code, trying to move away from bbcode parsing. Within a few hours, I received over 60 account requests out of the blue. At the moment, I have 10+ invites pending and 163 (!) account requests.

I still have 100,000+ threads to recover from the so-called “golden age” of Misc. Please don’t tire me out with rule violations, I might just settle with the existing content, which is enough to last me the rest of my life. By the way, it’s not launched and I don’t plan to, but I’ve built a (somewhat buggy) “replay mode” for the forum. I can rewind to any date, for example, 2014-10-12, hit “play,” and watch the posts flow in as if the forum is coming alive in real time. Pretty fun stuff if you ask me.

I don’t want to end on a bad note, but if there’s one thing I ask of you, it’s to please read and follow the forum rules. Lockdev/newmisc had a more liberal approach to content. I however am fine with the content policy from misc circa 2010. OB’s rules are basically the old bb.com forum rules, with a few modifications. Anyways, If you agree with me, you are welcome to join this ride, if not, I wish you well, but you need to take your posts elsewhere.

I didn't post on newmisc that much, but I hope you dont allow multi accounts. Allows too many trolls and takes away authenticity. Dont get me wrong, multi account trolls can be funny, but what took down old misc was the terrible trolls and they migrate where ever 'misc' goes.

Edit: I see the rules are 2010 BB.com Misc rules. That's a good start IMO.

Now we just need to attract new users.

Thanks for the info brother. Old BB rules are fine as long as you have the right group of mods enforcing. I implore you not instate Newmisc mods to moderator status here as they were the reason Newmisc ultimately failed.

Also, think about setting up a GoFundMe, spot fund, or some kind of service for miscers too help you out financially. No need for a patreon, misc plat, sex doll ads, or any of that bullshit.

You going to fix the forum not stretching for wide screen monitors? Some of us prefer to sit huddled in a dark room on a PC wearing no pants when checking out the forum.
