The revelation of the Church did not occur until after Pentecost, but Abraham is the root and starting point of the blessed race. Adam was the head of a fallen race; from Abel onward, we find saints as individuals; then, in the flood, we see the judgment of wickedness, and subsequently, in what was entrusted to Noah, the government established to suppress evil. But Abraham, first and foremost, is the head of a race that belongs to God on earth, whether according to the flesh or according to the Spirit; he is the root of God’s olive tree (Rom. 11).

Many important lessons are connected with this, but I cannot dwell on them now. Jehovah, the God of Israel, was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This was his name forever, his memorial throughout all generations (Ex. 3:15). God as God, the Being who is, not a creature that begins (esti, non ginetai), but the One who exists by himself—the Almighty who unconditionally called forth the vessel of the promise; and finally, Jehovah, the God of Israel, under whom the Jews received the promises with the condition of obedience (*), are identically the same God. Therefore, while it was of utmost importance to preserve for God the essential name of God, God existing by himself, in contrast to every creature, and to maintain in the minds of the Jews this essential character, it was also important to show that Jehovah was this same God, and not merely a national god, like those of the pagans. This, together with the difference between conditional and unconditional promises, is found throughout the Old Testament, from the Pentateuch to Nehemiah (**), and this distinction is the basis of Paul's reasoning in the New Testament.
