EV's are actually far worse than most ICE cars when it comes to reliability, repairability, and longevity. It's like sure, electric motors are very reliable, but the problem with EV's is always how everything that makes them work isn't, and an electric motor is useless without all the electronics and batteries that power and control them.

I always have to laugh when people think replacing mechanical parts with electronics will result in improved reliability, that's how you know someone has absolutely no clue or experience with electronic hardware in general. Just about everyone who works with electronics knows how notoriously unreliable they are as well as what a pain in the ass it is to work on and how hopeless it can be to try to repair.

In fact by far the most unreliable and problematic parts on any modern ICE vehicle are the electronics. It's always some electronic bullshit that fucks with modern cars, that ends up costing a lot of money and being a total pain in the ass to fix. That's also why basic cars from the 80's and 90's tend to be more reliable than modern cars, far less electronics, more of a focus on simple mechanical reliability, and they last forever with basic maintenance as a result.

That and EV's are notorious for getting totaled very easily. Like a basic fender bender that's no big deal for an ICE vehicle can total them out. To top it off the batteries, which you are completely reliant upon as your power source, have an expiration date no matter how you drive, which can go down dramatically if you fast-charge often. That and the nature of how batteries lose battery life over time means your range is constantly being reduced the longer you own the car.

There is a good reason why EV's are so cheap on the second hand market, nobody really wants a used EV for the same reason nobody really wants a used laptop or smartphone. You don't know how it was used and what the battery is like, and it's just a technological appliance at the end of the day so the newer tech tends to always be better and more desirable. It's not like there is anything to an EV that can make them a desired classic, they simply become antiquated technology with bad batteries.

I recently replaced the battery in my Mustang with a high capacity battery - $500 installed. In Australia, a replacement starter battery for a Model 3 is roughly $300 - replacement battery between $15k and $25k. The long range AWD Model 3 is $65k to buy. Nearly 40% of the cost of the car to replace a battery, vs roughly $15k to completely overhaul the Coyote engine lmao

Yup trying to sell EV's on their reliability is retarded. It only works on the clueless and uninformed.

Not only that but you have to take into consideration the fact that the cost of replacing the batteries for an EV just keeps going up while the value of any used EV keeps dropping dramatically. This means that by the time a battery needs to be replaced it will basically total out the car because it will cost more than the car is worth. End result is most EV's basically being disposable cars.
