Milla Jovovich action movie: Protector

This one comes out tomorrow -- Basically, the synopsis suggests it's like "Taken" with a female lead. She plays an ex-military woman who must rescue his daughter from sex traffickers.

I have no illusions that there will be something original here. But I like these popcorn action movies, and I think Milla is a credible action heroine. I think I'll go tomorrow.

I normally can't but I like her and the type of roles she's played in the past. I think she's a good fit for this role.

The movie plot itself makes sense. I'm a mom and if anyone ever hurt my girls, I'd kill them with my bare hands...you get the idea.

I showed my girl Die Hard for the very first time last Christmas Eve - she's 37 - and after, being the good feminist she is, she asked why a woman couldn't play the McClane character.

Now I can show her this I guess. I like Milla, gf wants to see more movies with hot women main characters (we've seen every Margot Robbie movie ever made lmao) and despite forgetting it initially I had to remind her she showed me Tank Girl (strong female lead in a comedy action flick) - she'll appreciate this one

I like Milla too, ever since Dazed & Confused. I just watched the trailer. It looked alright. If I see it on streaming, maybe I'll try check it out if the reviews are good.

I saw “Protector” on 03/06/2026 … I had the lowest expectations possible. All I expected was some popcorn flick with good action. The movie fails.

The main positive is Milla Jovovich. She’s charismatic, likeable, and (most of all) very much credible as an action-movie heroine … The latter is important because a lot of people recoil at female-led action movies; the sight of tiny women overpowering 200-pound muscular men doesn’t work for a lot of people. But Milla pulls it off. She’s able to appear believably mean and tough through her demeanor, voice-tone, and other characteristics.

Some of the action scenes are OK. I like the shootout that occurs on the road (it's the part in the previews where she tells the bad guy, “I don’t need your help”). The sequence in which she infiltrates the Syndicate’s compound reminded me of the finale in Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning.

The movie trips in some huge ways. The big one is that there’s a twist which is so silly (to say why would be to spoil).

The pacing falters a few times. There’s a police subplot that doesn’t offer a good payoff. The unnecessary military flashbacks annoyingly break up the flow. There’s a character named Colonel LaValle who appears: I couldn’t believe the movie would rip off Rambo so blatantly.

Some of the dialogue is corny. Characters repeatedly shout “Are you crazy?” at Milla. The police say, “She’s like a walking slaughterhouse.” The knockoff Colonel Sam Trautman says, “I don’t think she’s the one who needs protecting.” Honestly, they couldn't spend some time to write something more original?

Visually, the movie is too dark. There are some scenes where we can barely see what happens. The butcher sequence is a big example … Now I get that the movie is low budget. They likely didn’t have the resources to do realistic gore. The darkness might’ve been a way to get around that hurdle. Still – I found the darkness to be frustrating. Cool stuff happens during some action scenes, but it’s buried in the shadows.

The acting is so bad from everyone, from Milla Jovovich and Isabel May to the police officers and Syndicate members. Early, there’s a scene where Milla and Isabel May have an argument; and later, there’s a dream/hallucination where Milla sobs at the sight of Isabel May. In those scenes, their acting is so bad that it’s unintentionally funny. The way Milla screams “Chloe” at various points also sounds so fake.

4.0/10.
