Recently I was thinking about asking my mom to check for some old silver dollars and commemorative dollar bills from like 70 years ago that I abandoned and left with the junk I didn't want when I moved out as a teenager. I thought perhaps they're worth something now, but a fucking Roman coin from 1700 years ago is only selling for $68. There goes that idea

I thought about it when I first started getting into numismatics about 4 years ago. There are websites where you can buy authentic Pontius Pilate coins that, in theory, could've been handled by Jesus or his Disciples. Pretty cool to think about. Tons of other ancient Roman currency too.

I ended up passing on it because bullion is a far better investment than ancients and the hobby is so expensive in general it just didn't seem worth it.

I went through my coin collection that I've had as a kid a few months ago. Nothing worth more than $20. Feelsbadman. Had silver dollars and a coin from 1902, but they ain't worth much apparently

I remember watching those commercials in the early 2000s that had the quarters and what not. I bought so many and they honestly are pretty much worthless besides silver scrap price now lol

I did collect coins as a kid. Not a hobby now, but interested in history so appreciate it. 15 yrs ago or so I bought a whole bunch of roman ones that were found in some eastern euro country - in the ground.

So had to clean them all up and try and identify each one. Seemed to be 2nd century ones for the most part - mostly in bad condition, but some you could still see which emperor etc.



Then maybe 5 yrs ago, I got a really old one (500 bc) with a lion's head (tiny coin.)

Got it when had some weird inspiration to try and make my own pendant/necklace thing - relating to being a leo. Used some silver materials, and epoxy I already had.

But think if ever got into collecting, it wouldn't be normal coins, but rather these large medallions marking certain events in local history.

Big fat pieces that are not worn down as weren't in circulation as regular coins. And can usually pair with finding old newspaper accounts of the events etc. Or even items like cups etc. Plus usually very cheap.

Look into it still. Age has nothing to with value really. So many millions of those older coins available that only rare and "prisitine" ones are worth anything.

Pretty much yeah. All the crypto bros and sneakers heads have invaded the hobby. Glad I got back into Pokemon 3 years ago when product was available and cheaper
