This video tells the story of John, a 48-year-old divorced IT professional from Tempe, Arizona, who burned through over $50,000 of his $83,000 savings during a 13-month stay in Thailand, ultimately forcing him to return home broke [00:00].The video serves as a cautionary tale for expats, highlighting the major financial mistakes and reality checks John experienced along the way:

1.  Falling for the “Vacation Mode” TrapJohn was inspired by YouTube videos claiming expats could live like kings on $1,500 to $2,000 a month [03:14]. However, instead of budgeting, he immediately fell into “vacation mode” [18:53]. He rented a high-end, modern condo in Bangkok’s expensive Thong Lo district for $1,000 a month [08:16] and ran his air conditioning 24/7, resulting in massive $200+ monthly electricity bills [11:24]. He frequently ate at expat-targeted restaurants, ordered Grab rides to avoid the heat, and bought drinks at upscale rooftop bars [10:05].

2.  The Cost of a RelationshipShortly after arriving, John met a local woman named Melee [06:08]. To impress her and avoid looking like he was on a tight budget, he paid for everything [10:12]. This included expensive weekend getaways (like a $920 trip to Hua Hin) [15:07], a formal family wedding in Chiang Mai [20:01], and eventually funding various financial emergencies for her family members (hospital bills, motorcycle repairs, and rent shortfalls) [16:14].

3.  Hidden and Unexpected ExpensesJohn faced several heavy financial drains that he hadn’t prepared for:Visa Costs: Rather than dealing with immigration directly, he repeatedly paid an agent $430 every two months to handle border runs [12:40].No Health Insurance: John neglected to buy travel or health insurance. When he contracted a severe bacterial infection and spent two nights in an upscale international hospital, he was hit with a massive $5,500 cash medical bill [24:04].Fixed Commitments: He was still legally required to pay $300 a month in child support for his son back in the U.S. [23:23].

4.  The Downward Spiral and Breaking PointBy month 10, John’s savings had severely dwindled. He secretly resorted to eating cheap meals from 7-Eleven just to keep his daily costs down [20:48]. When he finally admitted to Melee that he was running out of money and needed to move somewhere cheaper, the relationship grew cold, and they broke up [25:40].Deeply lonely and facing tighter visa restrictions [21:23], John received a FaceTime call from his 11-year-old son, Kyle, who asked when he was coming home [27:42]. Realizing he had traveled halfway across the world just to become a broker, lonelier version of himself, John decided to cut his losses [28:18]. He sold his laptop and watch [28:44], borrowed money from a friend to afford a plane ticket, and flew back to Arizona [29:11].Final Reflections

His child support for a kid in the US is only 300 a month?

How the hell did he luck out on that low a payment?

so he sucks at budgeting?

got it

could have lived very well renting a private apartment with shared pool for $500 a month, eating out in regular places another $500. even with some hookers $1500 total. so he went through 4 years worth of living on easy mode in 13 months

what a tool

Lol, how the hell do you spend that much money in Thailand? Obviously $80k isn't enough to do that much with, but you can live in Thailand for like $800 per month, which $80k plus interest should give you a solid decade or more of living.

LOL @ this:

"When he finally admitted to Melee that he was running out of money and needed to move somewhere cheaper, the relationship grew cold, and they broke up"

that guy is a fukking idiot. he moved to Thailand and found a gold digger who used him for his money. plus he was already divorced and paying child support to his ex-wife.

imagine making it to the age of 48 and being this naive about the world. this guy is nothing but a beta bux chump who is exploited by everybody.

As an ex-beta buxxer, it’s rarely naivety that makes a man a beta buxxer. It’s mostly ego and needing to feel like the man and control
