Yes, but what about the absolute certainty that you eventually will die, and random people will handle your corpse, wrap it in a plastic bag and burry it in a hole in the ground, all your life works left behind for nothing and it will be harvested by others

Both.

Like any non coping human there is nothing I would rather have than eternal life somehow, that's why I study religion so extensively, but it all just seems way too good to be true.

I think deep down, people mourn not because someone dies, but because it reminds them of the fact they are next

I think it is more personal/intimate than just a simple reminder.

Everyone we interact with carries their own unique understanding of who we are as a person.

When someone dies, the story of us that they held dies with them.

The closer we get to someone, the more accurate their understanding of us is.

When someone we know dies, we grieve because a portion of our story is dying.

Most people don't know the date of their death so they live till they kill themselves or die without much care about it.

Life is hard, a lot of people are dying around me, this means the reaper is approaching

My brother in laws driver died a few days ago at age 37 in a motorcycle accident. Got hit by a drunk driver then mangled by oncoming traffic

I lost my son over 10 years ago and I still think about it everyday. And the feeling of sadness disgusts me because I have nothing to complain about, I am not the one who is dead but he is. But if the Bible is true which it could be (not likely but possible based on new dating of the shroud of Turin showing it dates from the first century) then he is going to go to the kingdom of heaven as it belongs to such as him

But overall it gives me no comfort and I fear death tremendously

But how exactly have you been through hell and back? Being sad about people dying ain't even remotely close to what hell is. You shouldn't romanticize yourself, it is vanity

Still thanks for the reps brah

I recently read the book “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl.

He was in a nazi death camp.

In the beginning of the book he talks about the conditions of the camp, including psychological tactics used by the nazis.

One specific thing that stuck out to me was how the guards would use the inmates against each other. He discussed how they knew the inmates would respond to certain things, up to and including killing each other.

The reason why this stuck out to me, is because we did it in Iraq.

There were a number of times we would put out information about detainees which we knew would result in them getting killed.

The information was put out, and then bodies with countless holes started showing up. Just as anticipated.

I mean we would talk about it before making a move. Like “you know if we do this, they are going to try to kill them…”

We did nothing to mitigate it. We put the information out, and bodies showed up.

We got them to murder each other.

I didn’t know it was a tactic employed by the nazis until I read that book

In the end we all want to be immortal and we also don't want to get old and wrinkled and worn down teeth. It's very depressing, I often wonder how other people cope

You are not the body.

The best way to cope is to know yourself. Once you do, the illusion of death is not a terminal concern, it is more of an exciting transition.
