I do higher volume with lower intensity to build the main lifts and lower volume high intensity on accesory stuff to build muscle. Can't be doing squats and deadlifts to failure. Bench maybe.

this is just common and effective training for getting strong

rippetoe says older experienced guys should do high intensity low volume e.g. max 5 reps 2-3 sets but i find it's hard to get into the workouts mentally

Yeah they’re great… very heavy duty. I can’t imagine needing anything more than that unless you maybe had Olympic weightlifters/deadlifters dropping weights in the same spot over and over again. Even then, I think it would probably be fine.

Is he recommending doing sets of 5 close to failure? Seems like a bad idea. I was using the term intensity to mean proximity to failure.

yes but low volume 1-2 sets if u do it like that it's safe

in my experience risk of injury is lower with lower say 3-5 reps and ~ 80-90% of 1 rep max because u really focus and assuming u are properly warmed up and not exhausted

I sort of hate a ton of volume. I’ll do sets of 10-12 sometimes, but rarely more unless I’m doing hiit (low weight). Just feels unnecessary for strength training.

That being said, I can jackhammer during sex, but feel like my cardio could be better lmfao

I was able to do that when I was younger, but those low-rep sets destroy my joints. I keep everything in the 8-12 rep range. But it'll sometimes do 6-10 sets. (Super Ded fkn Srs)

u use too much weight this is why 8-12 reps feels better because u use lighter load and keep the tension in the muscle

when u do ur high intensity low rep sets lower weight they should not tax ur joints to the point of pain srs

yea I do a bit of both. 8-12 rep squeezing sets on most days. And maybe once a week or biweekly I get the urge to test strength. 5 rep max OHP, db press etc
