I empathize with the kid. I’d be fucking pissed too if I had to study chemical engineering for 4 years and couldn’t get a job in my field.

Gen Z did this to themselves with their out-of-control entitled attitudes, poor work ethics, poor social skills.

Not saying all of Gen Z are like this, but so many of them are like this that employers no longer want to take a chance on some kid that can't contribute and can't be molded into a decent employee.

Why bother? AI is only about 5 years away from mass adoption at entry-level jobs. It's wiser for employers to just retain their current staff for as long as possible and then fire them all once AI becomes a financially viable option for the average corporation.

I think we hired something like 40 or so engineers in the last 12 months, 4 of which were for my team. There are a bunch of real smart and motivated gen Z. I have one on my team who is super chill, works very smarter not harder and is super reliable. This kid will do well for himself. I also get a lot of recruiters reaching out for other positions as well, all senior/managerial. For engineering, liquidity in the job market still exists for experienced and talented engineers.

People tend to work jobs to get money, so they can afford accommodation, food, transport, clothing, pay bills, occasional holidays. I think that's the general idea.

There are loads of youngsters with good qualifications now competing for jobs. Its often WHO you know, not WHAT you know. The person with connections and leads stands a better chance than the clueless guy who has a fancy degree but nowhere to put it.

I could believe a Computer Science having issues, but Engineering is still in super high demand, provided he did internships in college and such.

I think his parents advice might actually be worthwhile here. He should walk unto some manufacturing places nearby, and they will likely give him a shot.

Just add a year or two of fast food experience while he was in college. It's not like they are going to check and he'd be guaranteed a job.

I learned many years ago that lying on a resume is pretty standard and if it gets you to the interview, that's where you land the job. Or you know somebody in the company. They never check, especially with entry level stuff.
