WFH vs. Hybrid - What do you prefer?

When I started my career in Chicago, I was going into an office 5 days a week. After about 8 years I started going in for only 5-6 hours a day. Felt like a relief.

Once the pandemic hit, I went fully remote. 2020 to 2025. I didn't have a lot of work and for a couple years there I was pretty much retired.

Last year I joined a company where it was fully remote and required webcams for meetings. I could make my own start/end time. In the end I left the company after 2 months because it felt like torture. I realized I was waking up at 7:30, sitting at my desk by 8:00, having a quick 30 minute lunch, and clocking out at 4:30. From then I would get to the gym by 5:15, get home by 6:30, finish showering and eating dinner by 8:00, and then the rest of the day was mine. What I realized was that had I done this for 5 years, I would've spent 12 hours a day completely ALONE. Like, solitary confinement.

So after leaving that company I moved back to Chicago to a job with a hybrid role. Monday/Friday are at home, and in between is in the office. It feels nice working in a nice office in a highrise building with fun coworkers, but there are days where I look out the window and I ask myself is this it? Is this the rest of my life?

And then I ask myself if I were married, would I still want to come into work, or just work remotely.. because the prospect of being in a major city forever isn't what I want.

Thoughts?

Key is to remember that when you poop in the office toilet you’re leaving part of yourself there. That’s alpha.

I am at home M/F and in the office T/W/Th

no real difference in production, but I do enjoy being in the office around other people.

I started hybrid but went full wfh. If I go into the office nothing changes, just the inconvenience of going in. All meetings happen on teams anyway.

I make 160K/yr as a finance manager WFH and barely do any work. I feel kind of guilty about it.

Hybrid. Work from home 3 days a week is ideal. But I like coming in the office a few times a week to keep up appearances, to socialize with colleagues, and to just get out of the house with business attire on

(with my job, I used to get 2 WFH days a week. Now I get just one. I wish I still had 2 per week)

If you have friends, GF/wife, family around, social life etc then I think full WFH is the best because you can take care of chores etc while working and talk to your friends and stuff throughout the day as you work.

office/ hybrid might be best for you since you don't have any friends/GF/ social life so at least you can get some sort of social contact at work. Even if that's the lowest form of human interaction it's better than nothing for someone in your situation.

Do they offer any perks at the office like free lunch if you come in or take you guys out to happy hour after?

I despise my job either way but much less when WFH. I prefer full remote.

I’ve never had a job.

Why would you want to wake up early and go to some random building everyday in the morning just because some guy told you so? It’s like no thanks, I don’t think so
Oh Wow!

WFH and it's not even kinda close. Wasted enough of my life commuting, dealing with sloots and office politics/drama.

For my last job it was good, as whilst it was remote working you had the option of going into the office if you were fed up of being alone at home all the time and needed a change of scenery.

Nice plush modern offices too; ice cold water on tap, nice lunches, coffee stand. Plus I could listen to YT and play on phone for most of day as office almost empty and no-one watching me.

I run a business where I have an office to meet people in person and also work from home. I find it's a good mix because some days I enjoy going to the office, seeing people face to face. Plus, my office is super cheap and in a great location for my business.

Working from home all the time during COVID wasn't ideal.

I fully admit I couldn't WFH. One, my job doesn't lend itself to it very much (commercial construction). But also, I'm very compartmentalized. Work is work, home is home, and I really don't like to mix the two. It's also kind of like that tip I've heard where, even if you have a phone interview for a job, you should but on some business attire to get your mind in the right place. Same for me with working from home. My ass would be on the couch drinking beer and playing video games, not working my ass off. When I'm in the office, with the office environment, mentally I'm much more "at work".

I have a NYC job that's mostly remote. I just have to be in the office 5 days per quarter.

I live with my wife in Colombia. She's also fully remote, so sometimes we work in another poor latin america country for a month.

Orange turd said no more dirty Latinos so I'm stuck down here till that changes.

I've been working mostly at home for about 10 years now, and it's pretty enjoyable. I only go into the office to pick up my checks and for Zoom meetings, which is hilarious.

I do my wfh from one of the spare bedrooms. Have a sit stand desk. I can't do my job from a small laptop so I can't sit on couch and do it even if I wanted to.
