My family is just distant and always has been, even when we lived in the same city. Like if I don't talk to them for a month or see them once a year it's totally normal. We get along, but we don't prioritize family at all. It's just always been that way.

Meanwhile, my wife's family is European, super close and see each other constantly. Her parents actually have an apartment next to her sister's house and her nephew and his family live a few blocks away. Her brother in law owns a company where two nephews work and one of their wives helps run it as well. Even though we are a three hour drive away we see them once a quarter and it's a priority to my wife.

I prefer my wife's family model. Support and community.

From half siblings and extended family

Have u seen the old ppl these days. My parents were pretty bad but dam some of these old fks are real pieces of shit. And this is what I get to see. I couldn't imagine what goes on behind closed doors.

I'm not but my sister currently is. My brother was for a few years.

I'm fairly close to immediate family, including sisters-in-law. I see my parents at least once a fortnight and speak to one of them weekly. I keep in touch with siblings in terms of whatsapp, but sometimes don't physically see them for months at a time.

When it comes to cousins though, very different story. Haven't spoken to one of my cousins since 2011 (they live in Aus), and have not been in touch with another two since 2013 (they live in Gran Canaria). I have an uncle I see every 4 or 5 years maybe.

Not anymore. However in the 11 years I’ve been an adult, I didn’t speak to my mom for about 9 of them due to her mental health issues and resentment from my childhood. She’s bipolar and left me when I was young to move with her husband 500 miles away. I always felt abandoned and carried that with me. As I grew older, I learned to forgive her and understand that she had me when she was 20 years old, just a fuckin kid herself.

I feel bad for parents of estranged children now. I have a half-sister (my dad’s daughter) who cut off our entire side of the family. My dad is emotionally fucking TORTURED by it (ded fkin srs). He doesn’t say much, but I see how heavy it weighs on him that his daughter wants nothing to do with him. He literally texts her every single day. She never responds. When he was in the hospital for a stroke (could’ve been his death bed) he let her know what happened and it took her 3 weeks to reply with some dismissive bullshit. The irony is she looks and acts more like our father than I do. Maybe that’s why she hates him, because she hates herself.

I have an aunt I've never met because back in the day she tried to pull strings to sabotage my parents' relationship to get with my dad because apparently he was a Chad version of my uncle [her boyfriend at the time, his brother]

My mom beat her ass, parents got married and my aunt and uncle got married and even decades later my aunt refuses to admit what she did
