They've been doing this for years now. Since 2024, nearly every new product release has had people camping out overnight. The funniest shit was that lots of them were comparing it to midnight releases of video games at first, completely ignoring that the old midnight releases were annual events where thousands of people would attend and stores would put on events, contests, etc. Whereas these overnight queues is just 30 smelly balding fat millennials waiting for a box of cards they're going to throw in their garages for a few years as an investment, or to flip for a quick 3x profit.

Even better is all the fights you get from it, like this:

Just make it so that people can only buy one pack per day. Solves that problem.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

I heard the street resale value gives them like a five dollar profit, and the mechanisms to prevent scalping make it so they get less than a pack an hour.

They are making less than 5 bucks an hour lol.

It isn’t money, right?

It’s a psychological condition?

It's just the cards. Nobody actually gives the fuck about the video games any more. You can play with the cards, but that's like 1% of people that do. Most people collect as an investment. It's a serious money maker at the moment.

Cliffs:

- 2019- onwards, lots of millennials in established careers started to regain interest in Pokémon cards, and were spending big money to rebuild their old/lost collections.

- Covid lockdowns brings more people inside and back to old family homes, people find their 'valuable' collections and start selling them; other start seeing it as an opportunity to invest, and then big content creators like Logan Paul paid literal millions for some cards.

- Pokémon cards become a small, but established trade and investment economy, with people collecting unopened sealed boxes or PSA graded 'grail' cards and this bubbles along for years. Lots of content on Youtube, IG, and TikTok of people talking about Pokémon as an investment stock or unboxing videos where middle-aged dudes soyface when they get a popular card.

- Pokémon release a new card game, brings it back into the spotlight as the most downloaded game of 2024 and the highest grossing mobile game of all time. People get bored of digital cards and move onto physical ones.

- Huge boom of interest, and lots more millennials turn their attention back towards Pokémon cards and get the buzz again. This time it's an active trade economy and that's how people think you're supposed to collect/trade

You can buy almost any product from a store and sell it for 2-3x retail price, instantly. Lots of new cards are selling for >$1000 because the belief is that if you get a perfect PSA 10 graded card, it'll be worth millions one day. Items like this box of 11 packs of cards have gone from $50 retail to $1200 in less than three years.

It's basically the same as the baseball cards, comic books, and beanie baby bubbles of the 80s and 90s, but even more retarded. For some of these items, the market rate is already 2-3x retail before they're even released. So you can buy $1000 of some products, knowing that you can instantly resell it for $3000. It's easy money.

Yes the packs are basically like IRL “loot boxes” you see in video games.

People buy packs and open and are just trying to pull rare cards. You can find cards that are worth hundreds of dollars, even worth thousands. I’ve seen my nephew open packs and throw all the cards away and keep one. I would joke with him “let’s play like Pokémon cards (the actual card game) because he doesn’t know how to even play it. All they do is use it to feed a gambling addiction.

It's also because kids watch content creators who only care about opening packs for expensive cards. It's not like the 90s and 00s where kids who liked Pokémon watched the TV show, played the games, then collected the cards. Kids now only watch massive loot box opening videos where the content creator only covets cards that make them money. This is what Pokémon is to kids, and nothing more. Same with a lot of middle aged adults who are following the money at the moment. They impart this onto their kids.

And it's telling for a hobby when there's been a huge uptick in cosplaying OF sloots moving into the social media space because they know the hobby is filled with lots of lonely, and desperate, men who will send these women money to buy more packs and produce more content for them.

Either buying it for their gfs/children, or emotionally stunted manchildren who need an emotional support plush toy.
