i disagree with figuring out whats important early on and sticking with it

i know my 18 year old self and my current self are nothing alike, so why would i want to get stuck going down the path that an immature 18 year old would choose

Good thread. I agreed with most points. I may add another which is always be positive (to the best of your abilities). It's difficult to be happy when life just took a big sh*t in your mouth and give you Hep A but being a depressed loser won't change anything. Most successful men I know have always been able to make the best out of the sh*ttiest situations. Not to mention stress can have detrimental effects on you both physically and mentally.

Its a matter of perspective. Cancer tied to rake me out and I crushed it. I lost a testicle but I'm fine and cancer lost. Completely cancer free. Everybody is going to face big challenges and we can often do better than we think we could. AKA sometimes big issues are smaller than we thought.

Find a way to win.

I don't mean banal crap that most 18 yos think important. I am talking stuff outside the box. Stuff that is productive or creative. Go after it despite possible opposition.

Sometimes I wondered what was going on, and felt like I couldnt hear God, but never walked away since I got solid in my 20's. Early life was rough including teenage bout with alcoholism.

OP. If you were mid 20's again, and you had a savings of 20k or in that general area. Would you rather spend your youth traveling, or saving? Whats more important at that age from your experiece. Others can chime in too...

im 25, and still in college.. college over here is pretty expensive (32k)..I'm studying a semester, and working another. Starting to feel that I'll never be graduating and that's putting its toll on my feels. Ever had dat feel ?. Is 25 an appropriate age to start feeling that you're running out of time in regards to making something out of yourself ?. In other words, is my concern valid ?

I'll chime in on this. Just celebrated my 31rst wedding anniversary and I agree with a lot of what the OP has said if not all. When my wife and I were first married we had the choice of either taking a 4 week trip with backpacks to the South Pacific or build a garage. We choose the trip to the SP and we never regretted that. Recently I had my own near death experience and as I was riding in the helicopter to the hospital in another county,I was at peace. I looked back on my life and thought wow I have had one helluv an amazing life.

So many times I choose the adventure instead of the practical choice. As I was looking out at the mountains I didn't think wow I wish I had saved a bit more money (I have solid life insurance in place). I didn't think I wish I had stayed at the office more or I wish I had bought one more thing. What I thought was man I have had so much fun and I did everything I ever wanted many times over what I had planned. I will give you an example, in 2008 while the economy was in shambles, my two sons wanted to do one of our biggest adventures ever. To cycle form Anchorage Alaska to Tijuana Mexico. They invited me to go, I actually met up with them in BC and went on the rest of the distance to Mexico. Logically I should have stayed and focused on my business. For Christmas that year they gave me this giant framed map that showed our route and the pictures that matched up with where we were. It is hanging in my office directly across from my desk. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't look up and remember how awesome it felt to be out there with my sons on one of our adventures.

My life lesson is that doing things will always be better than owning things.
You can, and need to find a ground that you know you are suppose to stand on.. hence, stand your ground, this is the place where you know everything is as it should be for you. If you stand in a place where you know in your heart things are wrong, most things around you will never be right.

Rule number one, never work at being what another man defines as being "honorable", Honorable is is being true to what you know and and doing what you know is right for you..

Thanks bro. Yea, I am getting old. Ill be 25 next year, and ill need to make a decision whether I want to spend my money traveling for an extensive time or saving for the future. Mid 20's is a wierd age because you see so many people settling down, getting married, working on careers. Next thing you know, you are mid 30's and haven't done much with your life. At least those are my thoughts.

Ok I won't hijack the thread further just wanted to say, I always felt like that. But use it as a motivating force, not a disabling feel. One of my friends always jokes about how when I was 37 that I was convinced that was going to be it for me regarding making gains. I had heard that you start losing bone mass at 37 so I dug in and worked as hard as I could because I thought this is it. Well you know what that was 20 years ago and I'm not making gains now but my personal bests happened when I was 48 and I still can hold my own in the gym.

That this is it feel has always been something that pushed me to treat the current situation as if it really was it. That is the biggest reason I don't have really anything on my bucket list of things I always wanted to do but didn't do.

It doesn't have to be either or. You can do all of that just because you get married doesn't mean you have to settle down. I got married when I was 26 had the first kid at 27. And I had already traveled to Europe and lived in NZ for two years. But it was so much more fun doing those things with the wife. When we had our kids we just packed them up and took em with us.

As the kids got older it just got even more fun because then they could do even cooler adventures and as my wife was starting to not want to do those things as much the kids were right there to keep pushing ole dad to go for it and they still do.

Part of this is priorities. We had a nice house but we could have put all our money into having a really nice house. We had decent cars but we could have spent so much more than we did.

Thx OP, means a lot (srs). Only thing I'm having trouble with right now is deciding what I truly want to do in life, I have a good career right now that makes good money which allows me to feed myself quality food and live in a decent place but my career isn't all that fulfilling and I feel as if I need to find my true passion that at the same time will keep food on my plate and hot water in my shower. wut do ?

How do I hit the reset button on my mental state. I have such a negative outlook ingrained in my head and really struggle to have any motivation/be happy ever. Other than the gym or getting somewhere with a girl (be it sexually or emotionally) nothing triggers much of a reward response, why?

Don't worry at all. I had to go to school 3 times: (1)gen ed and too much drinking, (2) radio broadcasting degree, (3) AAS in AutoCAD degree. Still not working in any of those industries. sigh
