lmao this was literally a thought in my head too. I'd be stupid to bank on this being the case. If this happened I would still be content with the decision I made.

The teller's drawer came up short and the bank security team is reviewing the tapes which may or may not be good enough to catch the denomination of currency placed into an envelope over an 8 hour shift. Chances are that your transaction is missed over the entirety of the day. That aside, this was probably not that tellers first mistake. Either way the teller is done in banking.

At this point it's all about you and karma. The right thing to do is to take the money back, just understand that it's not saving the teller's ass it's only saving your own ass for future karma.

Here's what you do. You say "**** it" and keep the money. When the bank finds out that the money was given to you they will contact you. You simply tell them that you gave the envolope the way it was to a friend that you owed $2k to. The bank won't go looking for that friend over $2k.

Now you have to understand, that bank teller is getting fired no matter what. So the only reason you should take it back would be if you believe in karma.

Hell no was planning on telling nobody, but I couldn't keep it in and ended up telling my best friend. None of my bitch ass roommates know. If I told them I'd have to worry about them stealing it, or holding it over my head by acting like I have money to blow all the time. I kind of like having some deep dark secret that barely anybody will ever find out about.

I'd only be worried if I made that withdrawal from the ATM. It could've been a bank mistake but they could definitely track it and come after you for it.

Most banks require tellers to perform multiple cash counts before providing a customer their withdrawal. And for amounts over a few hundred dollars, most tellers will simply run the cash through a machine just to be safe. It's a pretty rare occurrence that a teller will provide a cash surplus to a client withdrawing, but if it was as "busy as hell" as you say then it was likely the teller simply made a mistake; they are human after all. Two hundred over, two thousand over can be in indiscernible to a teller who handles hundreds of thousands of dollars or more of cash during a high traffic business day. The shortage is absolutely traceable to the teller and I can gurantee you with certainty that upon discovery the branches' management team immediately began an investigation to determine which transaction likely initiated the short. It will probably take them all of two seconds to find the two thousand dollar cash withdrawal you made on that teller's transaction list and put two and two together.

If the funds aren't reclaimed, it's very likely the teller will simply be terminated. Regardless of your opinion of your banks culpability with the financial collapse, perhaps YOU should do the right thing and just return it.

Yeah I knew they definitely would count the drawers, but I feel like it might be hard as **** to track the transaction because it was crowded af in there and he literally had me come to the side of the counter because all the other tellers were full and we did the transaction then. Pretty sure if they questioned him he would definitely know it was me he ****ed up on because it was near the end of the day. And karma isn't real so fukk it. Morality isn't black and white. Would they really go for that though? Feel like they'd still be able to sue me for the money even if I told them that. If they call me I'll probably just give it back.

100% real with you. If the cameras in the bank are good enough they show your face, the transaction, and you leaving the bank 'enriched' through process error. Could you get away with it? Probably. Will you get away with it? Maybe. It's only $2,000. $2,000 wont even cover the legal fees for you to fight something you *could* win in court. That amount of money is too short to risk for anything if you've got food in your stomach and internet access. So in my opinion return the money. The teller is screwed, no point in you being screwed as well.

why do you phucks think that if he gives it back it has any impact on whether or not the teller loses his job???

he's either lost it already or the even is gone and the guy is still employed.

if the story is true and the dude got up and gave him an envelope with cash in it without counting it in front of him, there is no way to confirm that they gave him the wrong amount.

it's just his word against theirs and banks can't just say "we gave you too much, we're debiting your account now". it's not the same as an ATM or if there was VIDEO EVIDENCE of the wrong amount being given to him.

They'd only take me to court if I didn't agree to give the money back. Fairly certain they would do everything in their power to resolve this matter outside of the courts for the benefit of both parties. If they call me asking about it I'll give it back. There's no way I would be able to give it back until tomorrow anyways because the bank was closed by the time I found out about it so I could just say I was planning on giving it back all along.

Rest assured that just because he didn't count it in front of you it doesn't mean he didn't count it once on a camera prior. He didn't just grab a huge wad of cash and stuff it in an envelope. The bank won't give you a damn thing if you return it on your own free will but I'd return it.

Bro, most places will just subtract 2000 extra from ur account once they see the mistake if you already didnt give it back. That chit is counted, logged, and tracked for every customer.

Give it back. They didnt give you the money for free, its not yours. Also i bet most banks make you sign big paperwork contracts covering chit like that.

The bank isn't taking you to court, the state is taking you to court. You live in Georgia, anything over $500 is considered felony theft. There is no both parties situation in the news here, it's some guy got arrested and here is his court date.

They're gonna find their mistake. They always do.

And it'll be fixed.

However...this one time, the ATM machine at Bank of America gave me double. I only withdrew $40 but got $80. They never found it!
