Deffinitly say you owed someone 2k and you just gave him the envelope. Then get a buddy to play along when they ask him and say he just thought you were being nice because it took you a year to pay him back. Worse comes to worse they will take 2k back and you'll be where you would have been anyway.

$2k would be a huge, huge come up for me. I'm also a broke college student looking to buy a car. Wouldn't know what to do.

I just read a story the other day of a teenage girl getting millions of dollars from a banks messup.
She obviously spent it all on cars and party girl mentality crap. Then she got caught and has to pay it back.

This bank will see the error when his numbers don't match up. They will then go to the cameras for evidence. Since the receipt was incorrect. You could get charged with fraud. Since you knowingly and willingly kept the money.

OP do whatever, you can play dumb if they ever contact you, but it's not difficult to find where $2k has gone over the course of an 8 hour shift.. just searching through transactions with common denominators will narrow it down and they'll find the descrep pretty quickly. At most they'll contact you telling you what's happened and ask for it to be paid back / debited from your account, but if you deny it they're not going to go through legal avenues to recover it, but they may put sanctions on your account

It's quite simple.
Bank will debit your account for 2k Extra.
They don't give a chit that you told the teller 2k and he gave you 4.
There is probably some line in the terms and conditions you signed at account opening that says that any error is to be refunded to them etc. And they'll have it on video that you received the cash.

I would just set it aside for the week and see what happens. Better to be patient and see if the bank takes any actions. $2k isnt much but if the tellers bin is off by even $1 they would say something to him. Steps get retraced easily so just wait to do anything OP.
After a week Id walk back in and deposit that $2k into my account.
On a side note, when all your receipts state you withdrew $2000, Im not exactly sure how the bank can hold you accountable and take an additional $2000 out. If you saw that happen you could go in and just put that receipt down and tell them to re-credit your account.

Karma works in horrible ways. Return the cash if you feel you should. Your choice, your morals.. It'll be you who has to decide if you want to live with the thought of someone losing their job for your benefit or not

It's perfectly fine that you have an employee giving out $2K.
In fact it should be mandatory that businesses have some moron working for them that can't do his job. There's absolutely no difference in keeping $2K from the bank or from Moe at his corner grocery store.

I've been in the banking industry for over 10 years. The bank has no recourse to force you to return the money based purely on speculation. They may call you and say we believe we gave you an extra $2000. Just say that they're mistaken and that you counted the money in the envelope several times and that it only had $2000.
They will eat the loss.
Depending on the teller's prior over/short record and their policies on large "Outages", he may get fired. He will not have to repay the outage. Not your problem.

Probably a troll thread, but to all the people talking about karma, maybe OP has done one or multiple really good things in his life and this money he received is for all the good karma. That being said I don't even believe in karma.
OP just keep the money. No way they're going to find out its you. They can strongly believe it was but unless they have video of the guy counting money and handing it to you I think you're fine.

Also OP, chuck it in another bank account (different bank) with interest. Keep it in there for as long as possible and make small amounts of money as you go - if the call comes, you've got 2k to give back to save your ass (well, at least you won't be going negative) but possibly an extra couple of hundred $$$.

I did LP for Target and I had to investigate similar scenarios every day. Cashiers giving too much cash back... With decent technology, which I bet the bank has, finding out the transaction and customer would be a cake walk... I have no clue why people think this would be a hard thing?

Probably a troll thread but still interesting to see that the monetary threshold for people to compromise their ethics is so low, assuming they have any to start with.

Everyone saying they are going to be able to track it and debit OP's account is a full retard. There's no way they are able to track a teller handing someone $2k in cash. When the teller shows a $2k difference at the end of the day when he counts his box, the back office will research it. It could be recovered only if the teller took in, for example, a $2k check and accidentally deposited it as cash.
The teller may call some of the customers he thinks he could've given extra cash to and ask them to double count it and return it if there's an error. OP is in the clear here but he's scum for keeping the cash. Strong justifications with the bailout money, etc. It's the same thing as stealing IMO.
