I've had my debit details stolen somehow, and the thief has spent $1000 of my savings at various places. My mum's card got done at the same time, for around $1500. We told the bank, filled out some paperwork and the money was replaced within a week. There are actually websites to buy peoples bank details, I can't believe how often this happens, and how much the banks are losing or not gaining from credit card theft. Not that I'd ever feel sorry for a bank. Rarely do these people ever get caught.

tldr; Whatever you decide is up to you, but my 2c is that they won't even waste their time calling you for 2k. Like others have said, you could have given the envelope straight to the person you were buying the car from without counting it, unknown to you it contained double the amount withdrawn. Why should you be punished and deducted money from your account for their mistake?

I withdrew 2k and was given 4k you brony. The bank has it recorded as 2k. That's what's on the receipt and that's what's been deducted from my account. And just an update they still haven't contacted me. Figured they'd contact me first thing in the morning. Still gonna sit on this **** for awhile though.

If they contact you about it just pull the "Oh well I just gave the envelope to the guy I bought the car from since I thought it was only 2k inside. How is it my fault you gave me more money than I asked for? I asked for 2k and thought there was 2k in the envelope." Then play hard ball about paying them back since it was also their fault. Try and negotiate paying back half (say you gotta do this in installments if you don't have enough in your account) and profit 1k

Back in the old days before mobile banking was a thing, I opened up my bank statement to see that someone had deposited $80,000 into my checking account. I was 19 at the time and had no idea what to do. Everyone said to keep it, but that didn't sit right with me, so I called the bank and told them. Next month, open my statement up, and the money is still there. I called them again and told them that was the second time I had reported it, there wouldn't be a third. It took them roughly two more weeks before they ever took it out.

And for those questioning my ethics I know that what I did was 100% wrong lol. All I'm saying is that there's a lot worse **** I could do than stealing money from a bank that accepted hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in bailouts that was largely due in the first place to that bank's unethical business practices, and even after that, this particular entity got sued by the U.S. government for fraud. Keep it, and keep original envelope. If they do contact you, say you just never opened the envelope yet over the weekend so you had no idea. Then go and return it, zero culpability.

They can and will debit his account for the $2k if they figure it out. You don't think there are high res cameras aimed right at teller's desks showing how much money/checks/whatever are involved in transactions.. no different than casinos. OP doesn't have 2k to debit?? They don't care. They will overdraw the account so he either 1) has to make his account positive again or 2) get a chexsystems report that he has a hugely overdrawn account and he won't be able to open up any new accounts until that one is satisfied.

I run a business and have A LOT of experience in dealing with banks and how they handle problems. They will do whatever they want, whenever they want. I got a loan at a bank where my dad and I both banked. I had a loan payment come due and the money wasn't in the account, so they took it from my dad's account. Was that legal? No. What were we gonna do about it? Sue a billion dollar corporation?

I'm not saying OP will get caught, but more than likely he will. In banks, Saturdays aren't true business days, so they may not reconcile until today's close. I would keep the money close and return it if they mention it, because I guarantee you they will go into your account and take it, whether it's there or not, and that could cause you problems down the road.

Hide that 2k just incase they do track you down but honestly I would take the risk, fuk the banks. There is a chance you might get away with this and even if you do return the money , you won't be saving the tellers job.
