McDonald's USA CEO: $35K Robots Cheaper Than Hiring at $15 Per Hour

As fast-food workers across the country vie for $15 per hour wages, many business owners have already begun to take humans out of the picture.

I was at the National Restaurant Show yesterday and if you look at the robotic devices that are coming into the restaurant industry -- its cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee whos inefficient making $15 an hour bagging French fries -- its nonsense and its very destructive and its inflationary and its going to cause a job loss across this country like youre not going to believe, said former McDonalds (MCD) USA CEO Ed Rensi during an interview on the FOX Business Networks Mornings with Maria.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1.3 million people earned the current minimum wage of $7.25 per hour with about 1.7 million having wages below the federal minimum in 2014. These three million workers combined made up 3.9 percent of all hourly paid workers.

Its not just going to be in the fast food business. Franchising is the best business model in the United States. Its dependent on people that have low job skills that have to grow. Well if you cant get people a reasonable wage, youre going to get machines to do the work. Its just common sense. Its going to happen whether you like it or not. And the more you push this its going to happen faster, Rensi added.

Rensi also said that we should do away with the federal minimum wage and leave it up to the states.

I think we ought to have a multi-faceted wage program in this country. If youre a high school kid, you ought to have a student wage. If youre an entry level worker you ought to have a separate wage. The states ought to manage this because they know more [about] whats going on the ground than anybody in Washington D.C., he said.

Can't even blame them. Of course something like this would happen. A 15$ minimum wage is death to businesses in California. As a California resident, I simply cannot believe how this law was passed

Because the lower class often wants hand-outs and free money. They want to make as much money as the person who went to college/worked to get their position.

The people in office (politicians) know the lower class is a huge voter base as long as you promise free money or wage increases.

Any job that doesn't require critical thinking can be replaced by robots. If $15 is too high, think about all other jobs. 99% of them don't require critical thinking.

I think we can all agree that 12 or 13 would be fair?

Businesses should just straight move out of California. I love California, but it's the most spoiled entitled state in the nation. No one wants to work, everyone wants handouts and think they deserve them because they're a special cookie. But of slack jawed lazy stoners.

Lived in quite a few states, and it's definitely everywhere, but definitely the worse in CA. I think it's because CA is a great place honestly and kids are spoiled, but think that they're someone better or more knowledgeable about the world because of how spoiled they are.

Economically speaking, it's a no brainer.... let's be generous and assume the 35,000 arm will work only 6 days a week for 8 hours. It's still paid for in 35000/(15*8*6) = ~48 weeks. I've ignored maintenance costs and electricity, but then I've also ignored tax & benefits for the 15/hr employee so it's likely in the right ballpark. Technology always causes job losses... that's the whole idea. The entire services & luxory sector only exists in the first place due to an excess of available labour. More job losses means more pointless jobs can be created! Diversity and equality coordinator anyone?

I've yet to see anyone give a good justification for not indexing the minimum wage to inflation, so that people don't make less for doing the same job just because of the passage of time.

If you did, minimum wage would be even more than $15 an hour. LOL at anyone against this.

Doesn't bother me at all, who it really hurts are the small business owners that are barely getting by or paying their employees and not paying themselves. The people pushing for $15 min wage are only focused on large corporations that are pulling in millions or billions of dollars annually, they don't realize that every business no matter how big or small is required to comply with this.

What will ultimately happen is all of the small business that barely have any skin in the game will all fold and those large "evil" corporations who've already invested in figuring out how to automate and eliminate many of their job classifications will end up being the only companies left standing.

If a job advertised that their starting pay was $13/hour and when you got paid it was equal to $7.25/hour then that to me would be unfair. If a job advertises that it pays $7.25/hour and pays you $7.25/hour then the only thing that's unfair to me is agreeing to accept that wage and then going on strike because they're not paying you $15/hour.

increase pay to 15$/ hour -> people will get less hours and be required to work with less staff there at a higher tempo.


Does money magically appear to cover the gap? no.

McDonalds increases prices to make up for it, burger king choses to punish workers with less hours and higher tempo = burger king wins.

IMO this will happen to some degree

Good. I hope we get to the point where robots just take care of humanity and we don't have to worry about doing **** tier work.

The whole construct of greed needs to be broken. The idea that something becomes less good because someone else has it too is just a retarded human postulate. Take the "I 'X', so I deserve more" out of the equation with robots and let everyone live with enough food/water/shelter/luxury to satisfy them.
