the ONLY reason you think about this is because you're not preoccupied with other things.
again, i would bet my LIFE that you would not say this isn't "reality" if you were worried about a tiger in front of you eating you up
you would have to be absolutely brain dead for that not to register as the #1 human instinct is self-preservation
also, these theories have been around for thousands of years..they're the same chit..
let me show you. democritus came up with the idea of determinism somewhere between 460-370 b.c. :
Determinism is a modern name (coined in the nineteenth-century) for Democritus' ancient idea that causal deterministic laws control the motion of atoms, and that everything - including human minds - consists merely of atoms in a void.
As Democritus' mentor and fellow materialist Leucippus put it, an absolute necessity leaves no room in the cosmos for chance.
"Nothing occurs at random, but everything for a reason and by necessity."
it goes much deeper than this. "Every action we make can be connected through a causal chain that always comes from the external. In other words, when you act, that act is not caused by you but by everything external. When you "decide" to do something, you only do so because the state of the world is such that it led to that happening, without your control. You may believe you have control, but what you think is also caused by everything that has happened before and has led to that moment. From the moment you are born, your life is laid out in a set path and will follow that path without you being able to control it. Free will is an illusion. And this being such, there can be no morality (Unless you take a Strawsonian route), because actions do not stem from individuals themselves, but from the world itself. "
so, now we have computers.. this COMPLETELY vague concept compared to the universe..
and we want to call it a "simulation" because we have computers. it's not; it's one of the only things familiar to us

If some species created a simulation to observe humans, then why are humans so set upon leaving this reality. We do drugs, read books, watch movies; 99% of people don't give a fuk about this simulation. This experiment seems like a failure unless humans are just a random byproduct.

Only 3 possibilities:
1. We never reach a post human age
2. We reach a post human age where technology is integrated into human biology and we start running simulations, and those simulations are running simulations of themselves
3. We reached a post human age and got bored of running the simulations and have stopped
Therefore mathematically speaking, the greatest chance is number 2 and that we are currently in a simulation.

This one comes up a lot in my circle of friends and as much as I wish it didn't make sense, it really does.
I also believe that the speed of light (the speed of causality in reality) is a limit installed in the simulation to prevent distant cultures from interacting.
Interactions between all of the civilizations in the universe would be exponentially more difficult to simulate so to prevent that the speed of light is set very low.
In effect we are all in our own little petri dish sitting in the same galactic incubator.
None of this matters though. Whether we are a real species that will eventually create the first cosmic simulation or we are in one of those simulations we wont ever know the difference.

The only real argument that anyone could make against us living in a simulation is that it is impossible to create a simulation indistinguishable from reality no matter how much progress we make in computer processing power.
But..........there is a serious flaw with that as well.
How can you tell what technology exists outside of the simulation if you are within the simulation?

If we live in a simulation that's pretty mind blowing.
1. How have we become aware that we could be in a simulation?
2. How can Jeopardy-genius robot Watson become smarter than humans (Al****o as well)?
3. In the past, humans had no suspicion of being in a simulation. Say 100 years ago. But now we do. Does this mean we can change our own code? Or is our code constantly evolving? Can we change our own code purposely instead of living out a pre-determined simulation? Will we ever exceed the intelligence of the ones who created us?

This is very plausible. But what if we're infact a computer simulation inside a computer simulation, in side a computer simulation, could go on forever

it has no forbearance on "reality"
there are way too many random variables thrown at you throughout your life and to simply assimilate it as "detmined" is sheer laziness. the only possible explanation you could have to that would have to go down to the genetic level. in which epigenetic research has shown that genetics react differently according to the environment. that's FAR from determined and being the only choice that you have.

2. it is inevitable that computer technology will far surpass us, evolution never required us to be that smart, there are no limits on evolution within artificial intelligence
3. we are not changing our code, we are evolving within the simulation and the inevitable conclusions that we must make as we develop technology
Keep in mind that all of our science is predetermined. The science outside of the simulation may very well be vastly more complicated. We have only our own frame of reference to work with, and that could be complete fiction.

Which of these assumptions do you disagree with? If they both hold true then the number of simulated realities will be far greater than the number of true realities so the chances that this one is simulated are (# of simulated realities)/((# of simulated realities) + (# of true realities))
You seem to be arguing from a strange philosophical perspective. I'm just using deductive reasoning and math. Not really a simulation but an absolute absence of real choice or control.
Simulation, actors playing out a script.....it simply does not matter. We wont ever know and to us this life feels real and we feel like we are making choices so screw it.

all of these arguments about the universe being a simulation stem from determinism
where photons represent #'s and a photon (our reality) is dictated by a "potentially solvable" fixed, determined ratio - where we can accurately predict the photons next movement
that's where all the simulation arguments stem from and why the arguments FOR it are so wide. thats about the extent that we know of it; so it's easy to ponder as i suggested with the religion aspect

From Bockstrom:
1. "The fraction of human-level civilizations that reach a posthuman stage (that is, one capable of running high-fidelity ancestor simulations) is very close to zero", or
2. "The fraction of posthuman civilizations that are interested in running ancestor-simulations is very close to zero", or
3. "The fraction of all people with our kind of experiences that are living in a simulation is very close to one"
which of those do you believe is true?
