Source: Currently at a customer facility surrounded by tradies. Different group of guys than what I'm used to at the office, but they sure do bring the lulz. And it's easy to see how valuable they are to the company.

Since I was a kid I knew I was more suited for the traditional education route, hence me choosing a STEM field.

The smart tradies will also make the engineers job easy. We know what needs to be done and get it done.
If OP showed up on my site I'd sit back and let him come up with some stupid plan. Then when I know the plan wont work I'll tell my boss it most likely wont work but since he is the "smart" one I'll do it the way he says.

The most valuable people are the people that actually have field experience. My brother in law is an engineer with 10 years of field experience. While they were laying off thousands of people due to oil prices dropping he was getting bonus's and a pay increase because they saw him as a valuable asset to the company.
OP is also only in school and thinks he has it all figured out. By the time he finishes his schooling I will have made between $750k - a million and am considered an asset to the company. My current job should be done end of summer/early fall and one of the bosses from another job has already told me I've got a job waiting for me working with for him.
