Bogus for individuals. It's not bogus for populations. Women haven't gotten significantly more thick.solid.tight. every decade for the past 50 years. They've just gotten fatter.

Well, the results are out...

It looks like the self-improvement and fitness trend has backfired for men; we've got fitter while women have got fatter.

Now there's even more fierce competition for the increasingly few slim women.

Where is this? Also, never feel self conscious for not being obese. That's full potato mode engaging in your head. You should feel like Chad if you're the one non-obese guy around.

I used to use this same argument, oh I have all this muscle mass, BMI is chit...no, no it's not for the vast majority of americans. Now that my BMI is in the "healthy" range....I see that , no I was just either overweight or obese and no I didn't have as much muscle mass as I thought.

I was borderline "obese" in this pic by BMI standards.

The article says 35% for men so I guess about 37% combined which is close enough IMO to say 40% of American are obese.

Agree with this. BMI for women isnt as bad as men due to their lower lbm and the much lower % that lift weights.

That said...BMI does suck ass as a measurement.
just saw the chart at the doc office two days ago. at 6'2.5" im supposed to be around 176lbs..............holy schts

Makes you wonder whether the civilizational bargain (technological progress for human health) was at all worth it.
I wonder if Coloradoans are less obese due to the higher elevations (less oxygen) and the colder temperatures (thermogenesis) requiring them to burn more calories just to keep their bodies warm and to breathe ?

Look at Michael Phelps, he eats 12,000 calories a a day when training, but his activity level only burns about 8,000 but since he's in the water his body has to burn more energy just to keep his BT around 98 degrees.

BMI is straight stupid I don't care what you or anyone else thinks, there are too many other factors that contribute to high or low weight.
It's a good guide for statistics. Every time these stats come up people get up in arms about BMI. Newsflash, even among men, people who are "Obese" BMI but are actually in shape due to amount of muscle is probably something like 0.01% population so that argument is almost not worth mentioning. When you get down to Overweight, you might have more of a point but even then it might be something like 5% and that's pushing it.

Actually I think more than 40% of women are obese in you look at it by BF%. Anything over 30% body fat for a woman is obese !

Whenever I go to Walmart like 90% of the women look over 30% body fat. Lol.

That isn't the point. It is bull-crap as an individual metric.

On a general population level, most people are not walking around jacked and tan, so BMI is quite valid.
When all that says 'it is good' has been debunked, what says 'I want' remains.

According to the calculator, you could have been up to 197 and been in the normal range. But yes, the 'normal' they use is a skinny non-lifting *******. That is what normal used to mean anyway. They are very active.

People bike and walk a lot.

Thermogenesis is not a huge factor, 66% of Alaskans are obese or overweight, and it was colder there.

Same goes for West LA, while it is an ultra-liberal/progressive place, a high premium is put on health and looking good, so most people are reasonably healthy.

No but it's also not normal for a female to be under 25% bodyfat unless she is an athlete. Even then 21 - 24% is a good bodyfat percentage for an in-shape / healthy female.

The average person, whether male or female doesn't lift and is actually very fat.

Oh I agree with you 100%. The thing is most people in the general population do not even exercise at all or remotely eat properly. So for most people, BMI is pretty good. For athletes, lifters, and such it's not but we are a minority of the population.

Go to the food court in your local mall or bus station or something highly populated on the weekends and people watch. Don't just stare at the decent looking people, but actually observe what the average person looks like. I've done this and noticed most people are fat and dress terribly (in both style and more importantly fit). Kind of eye opening if you really observe them objectively.

No surprise there. Girls don't have a need for self-improvement like guys do overall. Also, another problem for both guys and girls is all the bro science spread about dieting that prevents people from effectively losing weight and keeping it off. Also, the statistic is kind of skewed. Most young guys are in decent shape it's just that the majority of Americans get complacent as they get older, married, and involved with their careers.
