What is "Bitcoin Mining"? Are you mining like you would for coal or silver? I don't get the reference, and why is it so expensive?
why can't people just create bitcoin?
why can't people just create bitcoin?

Is eth supposed to be a long hold?

Probably a decent buy when that trendline breaks. The lower it goes the higher that break will bounce it. Lots of people trying to short it still... could be a good squeeze.
edit: lol poloniex. of course it goes like that. probably won't go up now with a retrace like that.

What about ***** coin?
So in order to get ETH you have to first buy btc? Why? Why can't we just pay for it like we'd usually buy something online and then store them in the wallet?

this.
Even if they are slightly better, it cant compete with the uptake of eth. Btc never got dethroned by better tech because it was the first, just like eth is the first of this new technology.

Eth is going down long-term imo. Especially if it rolls back transactions. I'm going to buy back in when it hits $7-10.
If you grasp the basics of Ethereum, smart contracts and DAOs, the statement from the "hacker" is hilarious:http://pastebin.com/CcGUBgDG

To the DAO and the Ethereum community,
I have carefully examined the code of The DAO and decided to participate after finding the feature where splitting is rewarded with additional ether. I have made use of this feature and have rightfully claimed 3,641,694 ether, and would like to thank the DAO for this reward. It is my understanding that the DAO code contains this feature to promote decentralization and encourage the creation of "child DAOs".
I am disappointed by those who are characterizing the use of this intentional feature as "theft". I am making use of this explicitly coded feature as per the smart contract terms and my law firm has advised me that my action is fully compliant with United States criminal and tort law. For reference please review the terms of the DAO:
"The terms of The DAO Creation are set forth in the smart contract code existing on the Ethereum blockchain at 0xbb9bc244d798123fde783fcc1c72d3bb8c189413. Nothing in this explanation of terms or in any other document or communication may modify or add any additional obligations or guarantees beyond those set forth in The DAOs code. Any and all explanatory terms or descriptions are merely offered for educational purposes and do not supercede or modify the express terms of The DAOs code set forth on the blockchain; to the extent you believe there to be any conflict or discrepancy between the descriptions offered here and the functionality of The DAOs code at 0xbb9bc244d798123fde783fcc1c72d3bb8c189413, The DAOs code controls and sets forth all terms of The DAO Creation."
A soft or hard fork would amount to seizure of my legitimate and rightful ether, claimed legally through the terms of a smart contract. Such fork would permanently and irrevocably ruin all confidence in not only Ethereum but also the in the field of smart contracts and blockchain technology. Many large Ethereum holders will dump their ether, and developers, researchers, and companies will leave Ethereum. Make no mistake: any fork, soft or hard, will further damage Ethereum and destroy its reputation and appeal.
I reserve all rights to take any and all legal action against any accomplices of illegitimate theft, freezing, or seizure of my legitimate ether, and am actively working with my law firm. Those accomplices will be receiving Cease and Desist notices in the mail shortly.
I hope this event becomes an valuable learning experience for the Ethereum community and wish you all the best of luck.
Yours truly,
"The Attacker"

This changes things though... signed message from the attacker... things could be getting real ****ing bleak here.
I would not be buying ethereum at this point. The risk of a cascading washout dump is too great.
As far as I understand (and I could be wrong) there is a 7 day lockup on ethereum, and then all the coins that were locked up in the DAO can be traded as people split from it (as I imagine a ton are doing right now).
Will be a very tumultuous week.

It's bleak no matter what way things go, I feel. Either a hacker has the largest pool of Ethereum (who it's suggested was shorting thousands of BTC worth of Eth throughout the hack), or else all funds are returned to investors in The DAO as Eth (which represents of a large chunk of the market cap of Eth) all of a sudden, many of whom will want out quickly.
I'm confused as to why BTC didn't experience positive movement throughout all this though.

The DAO has been cancelled and seems to be being wound down. The contract is being replaced by one which just lets investors withdraw their funds. Nobody's saying it in the community, but this is suspicious if you ask me. All the build up and work, and suddenly Slock are cancelling the project, even though the error seems that it's going to be rectified? There are rumours now about insider trading, which will be even worse for Eth in the short term.

obviously this scared the chit out of the market and people sold
the eth owners are going to release an update which will prevent anyone from cashing out from the child dao address and perhaps send the eth back into the hands of the dao owners who will hopefully distribute back to the people. they are going to leave it up to the miners on whether they want to use this update, if 51% of them do, then people will most likely get their chit back.
its a really f*ked situation. it either sets precedent that the dao was too big to fail and is now being "bailed out" or there becomes a single person who owns 10% of eth, which who knows how will affect the market.

Guys, who can help me out with getting started on a solid app for running the command line?
I followed all the instructions from the ethereum site and downloaded what seemed like the most recent Windows Installer, and I got a cpp-ethereum folder with AlethZero and Mix.
Mix is an IDE as I understand it, which is great, but before I start playing around with development, I want to start mining.
AlethZero is, well confusing. It has no option to access the command line from what I can tell, it prompted me to make a blockchain username and pw, and from there there are no instructions or help anywhere I can find. I was able to hit go, or join, or whatevs and it looked like I joined the blockchain but I am not sure I even have an account to begin with.
Can anyone either walk me through AlethZero, or recommend a better/alternative, or just give me a hand getting started here in general?
I have gone though most of the Ethereum and DOA documentation but it's very high level and doesn't cover actually getting started, it assumes you already have access to the terminal/command line.

Ok, to follow up, I found two alternatives.

Can anyone speak on these? I chose these because they are JS/Java which I am more familiar with than the other offered langauges, but I wanted to know they were legit and working for other users before pulling the trigger.

ETH has been tanking. Had $75 in and it went down to $60. I bought about $50 more just now. Hoping it will go higher soon or possibly after the bitcoin split. Only $125 invested so far and its pretty fun to mess around with considering its like gambling.
