Confirmed. Blew out my back trying to deadlift 655. At least I was never one of those *******s that slams the weight down and makes an obnoxious amount of noise when deadlifting.
If you're a new lifter any muscle is good muscle but if you're really advanced it's likely going to make your physique worse. It'll build the chit out of your traps, glutes, and thicken your back (especially lower back). However, smaller traps and a wide back are much more aesthetic. I do them about once a month now for reps just to keep my CNS in shape.

On what planet is training your hip extension a bad thing?
As humans we push, pull, twist, hip hinge and squat. These are the main movements in our lives whether its playing with your kids, picking up the groceries, playing sports, moving furniture etc. You cannot be a human interested in fitness and well being and not train your hip extension/picking things up off the floor
And let's look at bbing reasons. Traps, forearms, triceps, glutes, spinal erectors, lats, hamstrings are all hit hard. So much bang for your buck.
Only a fool would not deadlift

everyone's a fan of DLs until they slip up. no need to address people defending it in here, they'll make their "Broke my back deadlifting" thread eventually.

why anyone would train solely for bb is beyond me. bodybuilders have some of the most imbalanced bodies ever. comparable to a growing teenager in his early teens that just grew 1 foot in 5 months.
deadlifts will protect your back and prevent any future pains if done correctly. they're god's gift to man really. that's why they should get their own separate training day along with some front squats and ham work.
it's never good to overload on a lift and lift with your ego... deadlifts just punish you more for doing that.

call me a ******* if you want but I try to do them once a week but not much weight. I've had a neck fusion already and scared to death to hurt my back and after I do them my back is tight for about 20 mins or so. I don't do much weight 180 for three sets.
I try my best and try to jump in with some of the regulars when they do it so I can keep my form in check

deadlifts twice a week on pull day, first and most important exercise. doin em tomorrow 5x5 350 (160) all way up to 405 (180) poverty stats but I know most of you tech riders can't do em anymore cause you ego lift.
Deadlift - 220kg x 1
Squat - 170kg x 1
Bench - 135kg x 1
Total 525kg

Agreed with OP, why risk such a dangerous lift? It's better to look like you lift, rather than actually lifting. Much safer. Another good tip is to use photoshop for that nice youthful glow and tan, rather than actually going outside, did you know that the odds of becoming a lightning victim in the U.S. in any one year is 1 in 700,000. **** that ****.

I deadlift every single gym session. 1 day heavy and 3 low weight days, the movement of the lift is very beneficial , since i started doing them 4 days a week, i feel much better.

Had to make this post after seeing a 400lb dude rep 315s the most obnoxious way ive ever seen, i wish this trend dies. You need to stay away from dls if you want a proportionate physique

The problem is that: 1) Because of this cancerous fitness trend on social media, people think they should sign up for a gym member ship and start loading up and deadlifting 3, 4, 5, 6 plates, and 2) Deadlift is the one exercise that allows you to ego lift way, way more than you should with extremely compromised form. If they could without being crushed to death, people would ego lift on the bench press as well.
Go to the gym at any time of day and you will see people ego deadlifting by yanking up the weight as hard as they can without engaging the proper muscle groups, grunting out loud, the dropping the weight onto the floor, then walking away while pretending to be a boss.

I slipped a disc a few years ago which pretty much destroyed my back and kept me from lifting heavy until recently. Been doing deadlifts three times every two weeks and my back is stronger than it ever was, lower back pain is almost nil. Can't squat anymore due to f'd up knees, but I can still DL and that keeps me from being a ****ing ******* like OP.
You don't HAVE to DL if you don't want to, but unless you're an Oly athlete with a real trainer, DLs are the best way to gain strength. Clean and Jerk and Snatches are arguably better for strength and power, but as stated, I don't have a trainer to keep me from having **** form. DL form is easily correctable with a mirror.

Only people who deadlift massive weight should be short stocky people, the only guys in my gym and there are some massive guys {who I have never seen deadlifting ever} who deadlift are two short stocky dudes in their fifties who do powerlifting meets all over the world in their age and weight class ,terrifically strong but they don't have physiques you would think are impressive .Guys over six foot, massive weight, poor form and deadlifting is a lethal combo.
To achieve amazing physiques they are not needed, nor is in fact lifting massive amount of weight on any exercise. Form, diet and consistant training is far more important. As anyone can tell you who has been injured in the gym ,even a minor thing can seriously affect your performance in the gym sometimes for weeks and months . It's not the worth the risk for any small benefit.

From an overall muscle standpoint I would probably argue that RDL/SLDL is a better movement, but Deadlifts are pretty much the best lower back exercise you can do. 1rm attempts all the time is pretty stupid and will eventually lead to an injury, but staying around 6-10 reps and watching the ego shouldn't cause an injury.
Plus it makes me laugh people will still bench all the time despite the fact it can just straight up kill you if it goes south and you have the same mentality someone who blows their back deadlifting has.
