traveling is awesome. been to 7 cities in the past 9 months now. haven not gone international, but my passport is coming in friday. where should i go? i was thinking somewhere in central america, since i'll be flying via buddy pass, so it'll be cheap.
the world is a huge fking place... it's always been interesting to see the culture and view how people live their lives in different parts of the world.

I've met so many old people in my travels who's one biggest regret was slaving away in their youth and not adventuring more. Like you said... this is mostly from Americans.
The best part is all the "American Excuses" people come up with for not doing what they want. #1 excuse ... not enough money. Okay... so get rid of your car (take a bus ride a bike), no cable TV, no cell phone plan, no McDonalds every day, etc..
People have such pervasive and ridiculous beliefs regarding what they need. I know people that are millionaires at 50 that still don't think they have enough to retire and adventure... like wtf.

It's a developing country so it's not US standard anything. Sometimes the power goes out, crap like that. The diving is amazing, some of the best I've ever done, if not the best I've ever done. At one point during a dive I was surrounded by 16 or 17 reef sharks just going around me and staring at me. They're not violent types but there were so many that I was nervous as fck, especially since they were moving so fast. Also went on a night dive and my light went out. Got to turn back on and a lemon shark was about 2 feet from my face just staring at me right when the light when on lol.
Anyway, the country (island part) is quiet, it's minimum in terms of high tech anything but there are clubs, live music places, AMAZING food and the scenery is great. Definitely worth a stop over if you're going to the area.

A lot of places won't give you more than a couple weeks off at a time. You'd need just a week to get over the jet lag if you're traveling overseas. Ideally you'd want at least a few weeks off to get your money's worth in those situations and quitting is your only option if they won't give you leave of absence.

People can do whatever they want. If you see the value of travelling, want to do it, and are financially able without going into debt, do it. If you don't see the value and would like to work on other areas of your life, don't travel. Everyone takes a different path, but they all lead to Rome (metaphorically)

All you *******s are acting like you go on one or two trips and you have to spend the rest of your life as a toilet cleaner.
There are 10 years in your 20s, smart guys. It's not an all or nothing proposition, you have plenty of time to advance your career and wealth and still have some time off for travelling. I wonder how many of these people saying they are 'building an empire' actually are doing that. Most people are working average jobs and wasting their money away on rent, expensive cars, eating out etc.

I believe it would be better for your health, sanity and happiness to simply work and save only a little bit more than you need to live and a safety net. 6-12 months work, then 6 months travel/pursue you own interests and repeat. Basically mini retirements spread throughout your entire life instead of grinding out 30-40 years with 2-4 weeks holiday a year to eventually end up at retirement in old age where more than likely you just want to relax and unwind rather than doing anything particularly mindblowing.
January 2012 I travelled for 11 months
September 2014 I travelled for 7 months
At the moment I am stacking as much cash as I can for July 2017 where I am going to take another 6-9 months off again and then attempt the 6-12 month work/6 months travel thing.

Speaking as someone who had no idea what to do, I'd say traveling is a good idea.
If you know what you wanna do after school be it work or uni, then go for it. Get that under your belt. If you have a good job then stay there. If you're lost, living paycheck to paycheck or still at mum and dads then go see the world.

What a load of crap.
Waste your youth prepping in a career you probably won't even want when you're older. Brb, making life decisions about what I want to do for the next 50 years at age 18-22. Nah. Better yet, figure it out during your 20's by exposing yourself to different things. This idea that you have to start grinding away right away is a leftover ideal from the 1940's and 1950's when people came back from war and wanted to live a calm and quiet life and have a steady job where no one wanted to kill them.
Plenty of employers now like the idea of someone who is diverse and well traveled. As long as you're building skills along the way, there's no reason to spend the best years of your life grinding away for some imaginary retirement. It's such a garbage attitude to have.
Putting time and effort building a career and/or pursuing further education as a young individual is not a waste of time. Though I wouldn't expect you to understand: Uncle Sam pays for everything, doesn't he? So you really aren't in any position to comment on the sort of life path many of the individuals in this thread should take, seeing as the bulk of them are going to be working in the private sector.Waste your youth prepping in a career you probably won't even want when you're older. Plenty of employers now like the idea of someone who is diverse and well traveled. As long as you're building skills along the way, there's no reason to spend the best years of your life grinding away for some imaginary retirement. It's such a garbage attitude to have.
Furthermore, this purported 'imaginary retirement' is not imaginary at all. It is a matter of creating a tangible safety blanket for oneself, in a world where a myriad of essential expenditures come into play. What of building a home for oneself? And for one's family? Paying for the needs of your children and their own eventual foray into college? What do you intend to do when your children get sick when you don't have the money to pay for their treatment?
That idea you are mentioning by the way isn't a 'leftover concept' from WW2. It's called being a functioning and contributing member of society - which is a concept that has existed for as long as people have been living together in the smallest of communes thousands of years ago.
If everyone decided to go off and travel in their 20s, then who would be left to man essential institutions such as dare I say, hospitals? Who would be around to take a gander at you after you catch your third case of crabs from a hooker in Brazil? Being able to pay for your needs and the needs of those close to you isn't the reward you get for 'wasting' your 20s away, it is the reward you get forbeing a contributing member of society.
BTW, for the benefit of the people in this thread, employers want people withwork experience. How exactly do you think it will reflect on you if and when you tell the person interviewing you that you had just spent the last five or six years of your life lazing away in Ibiza?

I really struck a nerve with you. Sorry bud, didn't mean to hurt your feelings. As far as Uncle Sam paying for everything, nope. I got out of the military awhile ago and graduated college, worked in numerous career fields, etc. But thanks for making a grand load of assumptions about me and then trying to insult me. I didn't bother reading the rest of your post but I imagine that's what the rest of it was too, just a much more long winded version.
Also, no one said it's a waste of time to further your education or build a career. It's just a waste of time to grind your entire life away and never enjoy things until you hit retirement age. Expecting kids (yes kids) at 18-22 to decide on what they're going to do for the next 50 years is an absolute crock of ****. Very few people have that innate sense of "this is what I want" at that young age. Instead of forcing people to decide and take out massive debt while doing it, there should be something like a gap year (countries like Israel do it and it works out well for them) where people go travel, work in random countries, etc and figure out what they actually like.
But hey, I learned about that kind of thing while traveling and seeing how other countries do it so what do I know.

Is it not true that you receive a pension, hence you are in the possession of an additional source of income and are thereby in a position to live your life without having to worry about making a full-time income?
I know a guy who just collected his lump sum payment a few months back. So trust me, I am not insulting you, and in light of July 4, I would like to thank you for your service to this country.
I am simply stating that you can't use your life to justify this idea of 'travel in your 20s' as the bulk of those ITT are going to be working for the private sector - they won't be receiving a pension like you are.
