Always lol at young brehs who blow their money to go on 'big' trips in European capitals, Asian countries, African sea-side resorts and all that chit.
When you could enjoy a trip to the countryside, rent a cabin in the middle of fuking nowhere and just spend the day exploring, or driving/riding a bike around
IMO save the international travelling for when you're older

Tons of people get by using public transportation or by other means, even in areas where public transportation is scarce.

So you really aren't in any position to comment on the sort of life path many of the individuals in this thread should take, seeing as the bulk of them are going to be working in the private sector.
Furthermore, this purported 'imaginary retirement' is not imaginary at all. It is a matter of creating a tangible safety blanket for oneself, in a world where a myriad of essential expenditures come into play. What of building a home for oneself? And for one's family? Paying for the needs of your children and their own eventual foray into college? What do you intend to do when your children get sick when you don't have the money to pay for their treatment?
That idea you are mentioning by the way isn't a 'leftover concept' from WW2. It's called being a functioning and contributing member of society - which is a concept that has existed for as long as people have been living together in the smallest of communes thousands of years ago.
If everyone decided to go off and travel in their 20s, then who would be left to man essential institutions such as dare I say, hospitals? Who would be around to take a gander at you after you catch your third case of crabs from a hooker in Brazil? Being able to pay for your needs and the needs of those close to you isn't the reward you get for 'wasting' your 20s away, it is the reward you get forbeing a contributing member of society.
BTW, for the benefit of the people in this thread, employers want people withwork experience. How exactly do you think it will reflect on you if and when you tell the person interviewing you that you had just spent the last five or six years of your life lazing away in Ibiza?

First of all is this illusion of safety net. Have you ever witnessed someone who has worked their entire life towards retirement lose it all because the stock market crashed or some other event outside their control happened? I have.
You make it seem like someone that works for 6 months and travels for 6 months contributes less to society than the person who works in a cubicle 50 hours a week and spends the majority of his wealth on entertainment and materialism?
I've never met a traveler that just sat around and "lazed" away their life for 6 years in a random country. All the people I've met have never had an issue finding work. More surprising is the fact that they generally don't deem any work beneath them... unlike the myriad of college kids I've known that wont except any job that pays less than 100K/year.

Traveling around Europe with like Ryanair is cheap as ****.
But if you are making money you cant travel for more than like a month per year because of your working contract . In Europe usually you have only 20 "free" working days per year.
I remember recently being a reddit thread where a guy traveled around the world for 1.5 year. Before he started his trip he broke up with his gf, sold his condo and moved in with his parents. The dude is like 33 years old. Like seriously then you finish your trip and realize your a 33 year old living with your parents and no job. So that means if he goes to a club and takes a girl home he needs to hide her from his parents that they dont see her... at 33 years old?? Ummm no thanks...

I read an article from a blogger that talked about living and working at a bar in Cambodia. Dude said he was traveling through and got some work at a bar on the beach. The owners offered him a house and more money if he would stay for another season and oversee the whole thing. It was a backpackers bar and they essentially wanted a westerner to oversee it.
My point being, it doesn't take much money... just resourcefulness... and dropping the idea of luxury. OMFG... no warm water... the end of the world!

I love to watch peoples reaction when they say, "I could never hike the Appalachian Trail." Then I tell them about the guy dying of cancer that was hiking it, the 80 year old that was hiking it, the 15 year old girl that was hiking it, the parents and their 9 year old hiking it, the broke guy hiking it, etc.
They usually change the subject after that because the truth clashes too much with their preconceived notions of themselves and the world. I find most people simply want validation for their BS reasons ... not truthful rebuttal.

Compare that with enjoying myself where I live? Not even close.

People own vehicles not because they are a luxury but because they are a necessity: it allows them to get to work or school, especially in areas where commuting (the bus/subway) isn't an option, it is a godsend when it comes to emergencies of all types, from picking your child up from school or bringing them to the doctor or going to the emergency room FFS.
This is precisely what I mean by choosing your priorities wisely.

Furthermore, a car in itself is not a must. The majority of the people living in this world do not own a car. You're spewing western comforts BS. Most Americans would be better off financially if they DID NOT own a car. BAM! 5-10,000 dollars worth of expenses a year freed up instantly.

Assuming your child has to be picked up from school, then what? What if your place of work or school isn't on a bus or train route (as was the case with me while I was going to medical school?).
Of course a car isn't a must - neither is a home or health insurance, and I could very well have walked the 50 km distance to and from my home and school three times a week in order to save money for 'travel', but as I keep stating time and time again: anyone who would choose that hassle and spend that money on travel instead of a vehicle shows a clear lack of good judgement.

Yet another preconceived notion that has very little basis in reality: pencil-pushers who work 9-5 jobs don't do it for the sake of having money to blow on as you say 'needless materialism and luxury' - these are people who have families to support and children to raise. Some of them might also have elderly parents who rely on them, as was the case with one of the posters here. Just who are you in a position to support exactly, when you go around taking half the year off in order to do whatever?
And how exactly do you think that will reflect on future employers once they see this general trend in your resume? Do you honestly think you have a rat's arse chance of getting hired at anywhere other than a McDonald's if they know that you are simply going to bail once you make enough money to travel?
You've never met a traveler who has just sat and lazed around a country for six years? Lucky you! I happen to know quite a few. Try 15 years! One of the perks of living in a third world country.

Each of those locations he stated would have to include daily transport, food, tours, which would add up to hundreds of dollars at each location. Unless he sat around the hostel or family place everyday sponging off them (majority of travellers don't have that leveredge). Like I said, travelling is great, but the budget travellers always under quote their true spendings. I'd rather travel and splurge then live off a cockroach budget to squeeze in 3 more places, just my opinion.

Come to think of it, I'm curious: just what sort of company will willingly hire a guy that they know will just bail after six months?
Man I can imagine the interview already.
HR: So I see that there are six month long gaps in between your various places of employment, can you please account for that?
OP: Oh, well when I earn enough money after working for a certain period of time, I quit and go around the world and travel.
I mean seriously? Please in all honesty, do you really think an employer is going to hire you knowing this to be the case?
Yep. Real Fortune 500 material right there.

Dude, as someone who works as a medical professional, let me tell you now: there ain't no way in hell you are going to be able to get a 'vacation' working as a nurse. They are worse-off than doctors in every possible way when it comes to workload. The pay is crap (at least where I come from) and the hours are terrible.

The nurses I work with would stick a knife in your throat if they heard you say that out loud. The concept of being able to travel while on a Filipino nurse's salary is incredibly laughable. Funny how I have never seen a white nurse in any of the institutions I have worked in where I come from no?
Funny how most of the nurses working here are doing everything in their power in order to find employment in the US/Canada/UK. Do you know why? Because the pay in countries like mine is crud and the hours are even worse - ain't no way you'll be able to be able to go to Boracay or Palawan working as a Pinoy nurse bud.

Very few schools in this country offer english as a language of instruction, and those that do are prohibitively expensive.
Most of us do get by though! Seeing as everyone in this country is an NBA fanatic.
Which is why IMO, the Philippines is a fantastic place to travel. A hotel room for two or three will cost you less than 50 dollars a night, and meals will often start at a dollar or two.
I recommend Boracay and Palawan. Although those places are oversaturated.

When you could enjoy a trip to the countryside, rent a cabin in the middle of fuking nowhere and just spend the day exploring, or driving/riding a bike around
IMO save the international travelling for when you're older

Be frugal sure, but dont save everything for later. life is short. and "lol" at the kids who spent their savings on euro trips? They are the ones with the last laugh, hate to break it to you. The enjoyment and learning experiences and just plain cool stories from traveling abroad trump any little monetary gain from staying home

the fortunate ones are traveling.....but statistically that aint most of them. go work at a large fortune 500 company. Talk to everyone 35+. They rarely get a chance to vacation let alone abroad without kids. And I'm talking six figure earners...still too worried to tied down to make it happen

Well, then again, all of the old people on my feed aren't exactly middle-class individuals when you think about it. They're business owners, doctors and company executives - which goes back to the point that working on your career pays off at the end.

And you are failing to take into account that not everyone on this planet has access to a reliable public transportation system or is within reach of a centralized 911 system: when confronted with an emergency then what? Do you plan on hauling your child or your loved one to the emergency room on your back?
Assuming your child has to be picked up from school, then what? What if your place of work or school isn't on a bus or train route (as was the case with me while I was going to medical school?).
Of course a car isn't a must - neither is a home or health insurance, and I could very well have walked the 50 km distance to and from my home and school three times a week in order to save money for 'travel', but as I keep stating time and time again: anyone who would choose that hassle and spend that money on travel instead of a vehicle shows a clear lack of good judgement.

50km is nothing on a bicycle or cheap scooter. Or even better... relocate.
I mean what if your child is deathly sick and there is a wall of traffic between you and where you need to be. Yup... we all need helicopters now.
This idea in your head of a safety net is rotting you and you don't even realize it. WHAT IF ... WHAT IF... WHAT IF.

These aren't 'what-if's' at all, all of the scenarios I've just mentioned are things that have happened to every single parent at least once throughout the course of raising their child.
Sure, there is a possibility that your child or yourself might never find themselves in a position that they will need a vehicle to get them to a hospital or some such other place throughout the course of their lives, but the question is: are you willing to take that risk?
Sure, I might never find myself with cancer or some such other debilitating disease (even though it runs in my family, particularly colon cancer), hence the lack of any need to keep a fund in place in case of such a scenario, but being able to travel wherever and whenever is definitely better than having some semblance of peace of mind right?
So I should've gone through the hassle of biking through traffic, in one of the most polluted and dangerous roads on this planet, (not kidding, look up Commonwealth avenue) instead of driving a car, just so I can travel? Wow. Really shows I have my priorities straight.
