statistically speaking, they are the most dangerous breed. there can be/is a degree of incorrect identification in some of the attacks, but they still take home the gold medal by a long shot. not sure what there is to argue.

Hey now, we don't all treat our pets as "fur babies" lol.

That being said, since cost is the biggest deciding factor for her in what kind of dog to get, rather than what will suit the household, she's probably a retard and op should say goodbye to his sons face.

please take the time to look past one pro-BSL website and realize that there are no concrete statistics to back that up.

If you're speaking dangerous in terms of physiology, I won't argue that, but then by that logic literally any dog larger than them is more dangerous. I'm not saying OP should let his ex get the pit bull...all the circumstances sound terrible.

I'm just saying, the website you posted is sht and not at all what you would call an unbiased source

There is no way to eliminate risk of attack in any dog, as they all have animal instinct and respond to stimuli. That being said, a bit will require firm handling and obedience training, more so than most breeds.

You need to ask more specific questions if you want answers.

^^ pls go with that fuking link, srs. that website is dedicated to banning, and potentially eliminating pit bulls as a breed
thank you...shouldve specified my son is 8 yrs old...not a baby anymore

the pupper will be with his mom at least 6 weeks...I will make sure its 8 instead...Im also weeding out the fear mongering an going with capable owners experiences

Think of it like this bro, all dogs bite, but the bigger, stronger, and more aggressive the breed, the bigger chance the dog will cause major damage/death.

All dog breeds have general temperaments, and pitts are naturally aggressive and strong as fuack. training doesnt do jack chit, its the luck of the draw when you get a dog how it will naturally act, and even then a "gentle" dog temperament can still rage and bite bad.

So in my opinion, a pitt is like one of the worst choices for a female with a baby.

Ive also almost been attacked by a pitt.
what is it with the misc and wifing dumb girls...there is no novetly...she wants a big dog to love for the duration of his life... I know someonw with a pregnant pitbull and thats why she's going with a pitbull

can you be more specific with the bolded part? Every well trained pitbull Ive been around have been angels

also my son is 8yrs old...not a baby (again shouldve specified)

This can be a huge deal if you have neighbors with dogs or just like to take your dog for a walk. I'm still not sure if this is something they're born with or learn but it's very difficult to train them and trust them. And if it happens, these dogs can kill a small dog in seconds and do major harm to a larger dog. I know this first hand and the consequences aren't fun. Especially with a dog who's name has already been run through the mud a hundred times.
thank you so much brah

agreed with the bolded as per my experience... My ex isnt a dumb sloot, she'll take care of the pupper both with love and tough love when needed

this is what Im afraid of....was there any signs showing early on that one was going to be more aggressive than the other?

The pit breeds are very friendly (4th highest passing rate in temperament testing), very social, and generally great dogs, but...

*They are very large, powerful animals and must be treated as such.
*Socialization and early obedience training is crucial
* Any pit bull breed that does not meet the breed standard for temperament needs to be put down ASAP. Think Cujo for St Bernards: A St Bernard is a big loving dog; a St Bernard with rabies is A Problem! Same with pit bull breeds: They're either very very good or horrid. Their temperament does not change substantially over time.
***pit bull breeds were bred to be people friendly and dog aggressive. Understand that active management of their environment is a requirement.

Didn't realize your kid is 8. is he a good kid?

honestly brah, but what i'm hearing, I would recommend against it, and say your ex should just go to the shelter and pick up an older, calmer, already trained dog that is good with kids, or pay the money for a puppy of a breed that isn't so powerful and hardheaded. I have a pitbull, and he's the sweetest dog I know, srs. Even when i'd take him to work with me (doggy daycare) and other dogs would get annoyed by him trying to play and snap, he would never retaliate. That being said, I still wouldn't trust him around an 8 year old, just because of how big and playful he is, and how reckless he can be sometimes. If your ex doesn't make it painfully obvious that sheownsit, it will be one stubborn animal, and less likely to listen to any training she gives him.

Especially the fact she has a young child to take care of too only distracts from the time she could use to train the dog, and the child himself (herself?) will add more distractions to the dog. Plus, factor in the stupidity of kids, and the unpredictability of an animal that can't communicate, and you have a recipe for disaster.

If you/your ex do decide to go through with it, the one thing I can recommend is to get the dog all its shots ASAP, and take it as many places as possible after the shots so it can be socialized and friendly with everyone/everything.

whats your opinion brahs!
The fact that you need to ask is very telling...

I wouldn't want one personally. It's not like they are divided into groups of peaceful pacifist pits and raging mad frothing at the mouth ready to attack pits.. 90% of pits who have attacked people, I'm sure their owners would have said all the the usual about how their dog is so nice, etc etc. Too much risk for my tastes.

Sorry to say, but women are stupid with dogs. That's just a fact, and since she hasn't trained a pitbull at all, and you aren't very confident in her to the point where you have to ask strangers if it's a good idea, I'd suggest you keep your hormones in check and stop white knighting the girl you accidentally came inside. thank you bro...Im on charge

no parent brag but my son is a sweet heart lol...I actually try to encourage him to have a more boys will be boys type attitude. My son has been around 80lb pitbulls before and loves them, never been/felt threatened by them.

I will take part in raising the pupper along with the puppers mother's owner (who has been raising them all his life).

Im not worried about him not being raised properly as he will be (even if he needs professional training). Im trying to weed out the fear mongering falsehood of pits from the actual facts and any true dangers....obviously with any big dog there are certain dangers but with the pits reputation I want to find out the truth

On spread but I agree. Not sure about a chihuahua though.

Op is only looking to hear from experienced people, but that experience matters is entirely the point, he admits himself his ex is inexperienced, when you've got a young kid is not the time to get your first pit just because it's free.

LOL at you needing a journal entry to prove what basic observation can do. How about you go outside and fuking view the average women with their dogs. Clearly I meant no experience training/owning a pit, not whether she grew up with dogs. I never said she was incapable of owning a dog.

I grew up with dogs, I'd still be a dumbass to get a pit for the first time and bring it round my kids just because it's free. The experienced people you are talking to are pretty much saying the same thing.

Socialize the dog early on with people and other dogs along with basic obedience training and he/she will turn out fine.

Pitbulls are by and large the highest % population of dogs, and I think that contributes to why they get such a bad rap. They are given out for free as puppies and they make up the highest % of dogs in animal shelters. I think a lot of chit owners are just attracted to the whole free part of having a pitbull. You know what they say about people who take advantage of free stuff.

Anyways, they are definitely more aggressive naturally, but that can be squashed with socialization and training along with spay/neutering. I've known a few pit owners in my life and they are super friendly dogs and good people own them. I've also owned 2 rottweilers and they were the kindest, sweetest dogs I've ever had. (They were trained therapy dogs though)

There's a girl on my FB who volunteers at the county shelter and they have ~400 dogs and they have to put down 40 of them every day. Every day she is posting FINAL ATTEMPT pictures and videos of pitbulls at the shelter to try to get them adopted before they are put down the next morning. They are always kissing her/playing nice with her in the photos and videos, and most of them are in a kennel with other dogs coexisting peacefully.

No, my argument is that it's a bad idea for a beginner to get a pitbull because they have the POTENTIAL to be MONSTERS when not TRAINED RIGHT. You seem to think that having a ****ing beagle or summat makes you well trained with dogs, but you're too stupid to understand that this breed, though lovable WHEN TRAINED RIGHT, has massive jaw muscles, one of the highest bite forces in the dog world, a massive chest to spin around quick with, the potential to drag HUNDREDS of pounds, and the tenacity of a fuking bulldog. These dogs WILL kill people if they aren't trained properly; This isn't up for debate, and dogs don't just 'know' their place without reinforcement and stern direction.

You're just focusing on the girl part, which isn't even a farfetched argument since it's a massive ****ing dog and you wouldn't even be asking this question if you were confident that she could control it.

You've got many people ITT telling you the same ****, but you're too stupid to understand it. Living around pitbulls =/= being experienced with them, and doens't mean you have a fuking leg up with pitbulls. Fist yourself.

They are always kissing her/playing nice with her in the photos and videos, and most of them are in a kennel with other dogs coexisting peacefully.
thank you bro...can you expand on the trained thearpy part? Ill take care of those costs myself if its effective

the bolded broke my heart....I feel like cht, Id like to think when Im ready for a doge Ill go save one from the shelter

Stupid owners are honestly my #1 pet peeve, because it's retards like the OP who underestimate a breed and over-estimate their own abilities that get entire breeds blacklisted.

Not to mention the whole 'it's free!' thing that cookie was talking about. Just LOL at this entire situation.

Many pit bulls are "therapy trained" through Delta Dogs and the like- they go around hospitals visiting patients to cheer them up and brighten somebody's day.http://www.akc.org/events/title-reco...organizations/

I will take part in raising the pupper along with the puppers mother's owner (who has been raising them all his life).

Im not worried about him not being raised properly as he will be (even if he needs professional training). Im trying to weed out the fear mongering falsehood of pits from the actual facts and any true dangers....obviously with any big dog there are certain dangers but with the pits reputation I want to find out the truth
good to hear, I only asked about son because if he was a little dik, i would say never get a pitbull around him. Of course, i doubt you'd tell me, but at least you'd be aware.

If it was up to me, I'd delegate one person to train the dog until he's got it mostly down, so that there's consistency. Otherwise, the 3 of you might have different methods, and then dog will get confused and no one's training will work.

As far as safety goes...just socialize, socialize, socialize. If you dog never has any reason to get protective/aggressive, and only has positive encounters with other people/dogs, there will be no reason for him to become violent.

Most importantly though, keep a close eye on the pup's temperament. try and gauge how innocent he is, or how mischievous, srs. And once he gets over 25lbs, keep a real close eye on him whenever he's around your kid, at least until you trust him and your kid enough to be around each other with no problems.

I'm not too sure tbh.. My stepmom was a therapist and she had some kind of certification for the dogs that allowed her to bring them to her work because they helped to sooth the clients with their friendliness

This will prolly be my last post in this topic on the subject.

A pitbull and a 8 year old kid is a bad mix. Any large, powerful, aggressive dog breed is a bad mix with kids. That goes for all dogs. A pit/rotty is THE WORST choice for a female with a child. Cuz if it does rages and start biting, will she be strong enough to stop the dog? And why even risk it?

Im just being real. Honestly all big/medium sized dogs are terrible for children and women , they run into them, knock the kids over, too heavy to walk, cant control around other people/dogs, kids get sick of big dogs after like a week and wont even want to play cuz the dog is just too big to control....ect, PLUS if the dog does attack...your out of luck cuz its so big and strong.

I have about 30 years of dog experience.

again thank you!

Ya I doubt any parent would admit their kid is a little sht lol, but he's very timid in general. I dont live with my ex obviously so itll be her raising him...Ill be there often to see my son ofc and even take him on the weekends when the time comes.

I think Im going to pay for the therapy/dog training sessions.

How fast do pits grow?

The pupper will grow around 2 cats and will be introduced to other dogs early on for sure. My ex's family are dog people so there are pitbulls and husky's galore for him to play with.

Im overly protective with my son and so is his mom but we will take extra consideration when we get the pupper
