Im just being real. Honestly all big/medium sized dogs are terrible for children and women , they run into them, knock the kids over, too heavy to walk, cant control around other people/dogs, kids get sick of big dogs after like a week and wont even want to play cuz the dog is just too big to control....ect, PLUS if the dog does attack...your out of luck cuz its so big and strong.

I have about 30 years of dog experience.

(Owner of pitbull)

My gf introduced me to pits. Previously, like majority of misinformed, I though they were vicious fighting dogs. Wrong.
Pitbulls use to be the dog everyone had and were thought of as a "nanny dog". Great with kids. Then comes "gangstas" and beta species of "humans" who fight dogs for pleasure. Pitbulls are built like tanks and powerful creatures. If raised to kill, they will. Theyll do a damn good job. So if you read the news from a local ghetto were a poor child was mauled by their uncle's fighting pitbull, yea they are gonna get a terrible name. If you were raised in a ghetto and taught to kill, youd do it. You are a product of your environment. If you were raised in Iowa and taught nothing but farming, thats all youd know. Since seeing what awesome dogs they can be, Ive had multiple pits. Ive fostered some that got rescued from terrible abusive pasts. They are animals. They do what they are taught. But, the majority are lovers and sleep non stop. My current one is 60lbs and built like a rhino. He jumps on the couch and curls up on my chest. They are good dogs if you let them be.

Short for those who cant read good - Pitbulls are genetically powerful creatures. They are awesome dogs. They get a bad wrap by the subspecies of "human" that raise them to fight. It is not genetic. Get a pitbull and itll be your best friend.

I almost had a random pitt attack me, thats all i know in my personal experience. That was in a suburban area too, not the ghetto.

Any dog can attack at any time, thats all i know. Go on youtube and you can find police trained dogs attacking news reporters and chit lol, but most of those are german shepards.

My final word is dont get a pitt if you have kids. Dont get any big dog if you have kids.

I think Im going to pay for the therapy/dog training sessions.

How fast do pits grow?

The pupper will grow around 2 cats and will be introduced to other dogs early on for sure. My ex's family are dog people so there are pitbulls and husky's galore for him to play with.

Im overly protective with my son and so is his mom but we will take extra consideration when we get the pupper
idk if there's a regular rate, but mine was 15lbs when I got him at 8 weeks. within a few months, he was 40. By 1 year, he was 70, and he's now sitting at a solid 76.5 lbs at 1.75years old lol

funniest part is I thought he'd only be like 45-50 lbs, based on his parents and his size when i got him. Mine grew up with a cat in the house as well, it's probably good for him, especially if your cats won't take any chit and will put a beatdown on the dog if he gets too rough.

Sounds like he'll have plenty of socialization, but remember, he needs to meet unfamiliar as well as familiar dogs. If you just take him to the same 3-4 dogs every time, he'll have a little pack. and if anything, he may become more aggressive with them, vs w/o, increasing potential for him to act up.

just please stay safe brah, along with your kid

Haven't read all the posts but having many pits should be able to give some insight

If you are not raising a fighting dog there will be minimal issues.

You need to spend a lot of time with training the dog. I saw the greatest result of positive reinforcement (treat training) until basic obedience and then you can move into just verbal praise and petting.

Spend a lot of time with exercise, I did a 30 minute to 60 minute every morning and a couple hours as long as it wasn't too hot out at night. All family members should attend walks when possible with each person being a handler. This will help create the bond with all family members.

Make sure to work on possession, food, toys, bones. If you can get the dog to leave it on command and just sit and bertstare you.. you are well on track.

Socialize the dog in controlled environments on leash to start and move up to dog parks. Don't listen to all the negative chit you hear on the misc or foxnews on pits. Rescuing fighting dogs or beating the chit out of your dog is the only way to create an unstable dog. You provide them their necessities and they will be good.

My advice as the Author of a book about Pitbulls and Pitbull Training is to study and start training right now.

The vast majority of Pitbulls are not naturally Human Aggressive. In fact they were bred to be submissive to humans and make terrible guard dogs. True story some idiots broke into my buddies house while he and his Rednose were home, held them at gun point and stole a bunch of stuff. The Rednose Pitbull hid under the bed the whole time.

However Pitbulls are bred to have a extremely high game drive and will have a natural urge to kill other animals. Especially smaller animals.

The best solution to this is socialization. Expose your dog to as many other dogs and small animals as possible as often as possible.

Next learn about Training and spend a few hours a week on it. You want to focus on Positive Reinforcement, not punishment. If you hit your dog it will become aggressive toward other people out of fear. Very bad move.

Finally, if there is a baby in the house you should be extra careful of course, however if the child is a few years old it should be fine. The only time I really worry about kids around Pitbulls is when the Pitbulls are already adults and may have some unknown issues.

Also, the best way to know what kind of dog your dog will be is to spend time with it's parents. Genetics play a very big role in aggression and due to dumb people wanting big Pitbulls (they are supposed to be mid size dogs) people often breed them with bigger and more aggressive breeds.

Good Luck and if you're interested my book is The Pitbull Guide on Amazon. Pretty cheap and a quick read that will make a huge difference.

No chance I would have a pitt with a kid in the house under like 15-16 years old.

Women cant keep even their bathrooms clean, what the fuk makes them think they can take the responsibility of a 150LB killing machine.

The only people that should own one are experienced dog owners who have owned large breed dogs. Likely live on an acreage with controls in place, no kids etc...

In fairness I've seen shepards getting equally sneaky/aggressive but this is usually as they age.

It goes for any sort of dog. My boxer was beat prior to the rescue and she had a bunch of issues. She tried to fight my 2 labs the day I brought her home where it turned into solitary confinement for the first couple of weeks and couldn't be left alone with them and my friends couldn't bring there kids over without her locked up. After training and becoming familiar with me where she knew I wouldn't put her in harms way or harm her she's the most loyal dog and has no aggression anymore.

Respect the pack and they will respect back.

Highly recommend being part of pup's training from the start- including the son.

Pit bulls "grow" fast (10-> 65# by 18 months), but they never "grow up" and stay big puppies for many years.

I'm not concerned about son's age, but timidity is *not* good around big dogs, esp pit bulls. Bad juju if the humans aren't 100% in charge.

Why'd you ignore the part where he said the type of owner that gives this breed a bad name is like your ex?

I'm glad you are trying to research this somewhat, but you seem content to skim over anything potentially bad, even if it's coming from an experienced person.
It concerns me that your ex doesn't seem to put much thought into it as you though, and she's the one that's going to be there with the dog and your son most of the time.

I have experience with them, but you chose to ignore me because I insulted your princess.

It's clear you don't want to hear anything except people telling you that it's a fantastic idea that a woman with a small child gets a powerful dog because you'll be in its life 'sometimes'. Everyone ITT is suggesting against it, some more than others, but you're reading only what you want to read.

Edited to add: The reason you're a stupid person, OP, is because you expect peer reviewed studies out of myself and cookie for saying it's a bad idea, yet are accepting everyone else's anecdotal evidence ITT because they're seemingly encouraging you to get this puppy. You're a fuking buffoon with confirmation bias and a bad attitude.

You're reasons 2 and 4 of why someone should fist themselves. Start lubing up that fist.

Some other tips...

Think like a pack. Let the dog know he is not the leader. Which means submission, not punishment.

Always eat before you feed your dog. In packs the leader eats first.

Then have both your son and anyone else in the house take turns feeding the dog. ALWAYS make the dog Sit on command before feeding him. Submission.

Beyond that, be careful around the 1 year mark. Male dogs especially can exhibit new problems around puberty.

first off, they are HIGH DRIVE HIGH ENERGY dogs.

you need to set aside 3 hours a day training them, letting them run around, and tire them out.

please dont be like those dog owners, where the dog is constantly tugging on the leash, it never listens to the owner, does whatever the fuk it wants.

you have a lot of dog training research to do if you have to make a thread like this.

Can't fix stupid, love. No point in trying to tell this stubborn, dumb frog anything and just hope that his ex-bird doesn't totally fuk up the dog.
What experience do you have with pitbulls? Your only argument is that the owner won't have a penis... You have issues friend... Try living life thru ur own experience instead of what randoms on the net tell you

Beyond that, be careful around the 1 year mark. Male dogs especially can exhibit new problems around puberty.
Again thank you! Very informative from someone who has the experience and know how with pitbulls

@vocel notice how he stated his credentials then gave me the information

We paid $150 for a 6 week behavior class and $150 for a 6 week obedience class. He is super protective over our son (7 months old) its kind of scary lol but hes an awesome pupper (3 years old). They were born to be nanny dogs. Don't show any hostility towards your son with him around, srs it will end bad. Other than that enjoy the phuck out of him.

edit: useless without pics so here you go.

There's ALWAYS the risk of an attack... Here in the UK, Staffies are hated. It's purely because Chavs that own them will leave them alone with their kids then freak the fk out when it savages the kid.

Staffies are NANNY dogs. You couldn't find a nicer breed to look after a child. Since birth I've had dogs. Border Collies are my main as I compete Agility with them, do Sheep herding trials with them and compete Flyball. I've had Staffies, Huskies, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, German Shepherds, Terriers. They've all been amazing with people and other dogs. But I would NEVER leave them alone with a child. If I did and the child got bit, I'd blame the child.

Dogs will only lash out if they feel threatened. A Kid yanking on it's tail is going to fk it off. Imagine a kid yanking your hair... nah, I'd snap it's fking hand off too.

Pitbulls are awesome dogs. Just don't leave it alone with a kid is all I'm saying. My cousin in America has 3 and my brother and I go over each year to stay for a week with his niece and she will sit on the sofa with the 3 pits around her and they'll just all fall asleep together. But we'd never leave them alone. Both need a p!ss? ill wait, you go, ill go when you're back. It's not that we don't trust the dogs, we just don't trust the kid.

This is why if I ever had a kid I'd make sure it knew boundaries, especially around dogs. See a dog in public? ASK if you can go up to it, ASK if it's friendly etc... and NEVER go running up to a dog, they see that as very confrontational.

tl;dr. Pit's are fine, just make sure kids know their boundaries around them.

Generally smaller dogs are more aggressive/prone to biting, the reason Pits, Rotties etc. get a bad rep is that when they do it they cause way more damage than say a mean little Chihuahua.

As others have said, train it, exercise it, neuter it (should help with a calmer demeanor) and make sure its not left alone with the kid until hes older (kids tend to get munched when they do dumb stuff like tug on ears, or poke eyes).

Just feed it a newborn child every week and it'll be docile for the most part

Read first page - this is always highly debated. Pitbull and pitbull type of dogs are no more inherently vicious than any other dog breed. In fact their bull baiting heritage actually discouraged human aggression as it was an undesireable trait.

Which is why you don't see any bully breeds having typical guard dog type duties - bulldogs / bull terriers / staffies / APBT etc.

I grew up with APBT's. I own one now. he's the best dog ever.

EDIT: also lots of discussion here on fixing your dog - it has never been shown to lower aggression. You have a dominant/assertive dog and you neuter him. guess what - he's still dominant and assertive. My guy Kane, is still intact but I kept him that way b/c we're both active and I dont' worry about him getting out and getting female dogs knocked up. Nothing wrong with neutering your pet, in fact I encourage it most of the time, but take a look at some of the science behind it.

It also does NOT lower their incidence of cancer like most people say - unlike humans prostate enlargement in dogs is not tied to the sex hormones. Also if you fix a dog before they have fully developed (at least 1'ish) they will grow taller than they would nromally (this also happens in horses) and makes them more prone to hip displasia and related problems.

"Raised" isn't the right word. Some pits are just naturally aggressive towards other animals as stated again and again. IMO, pits shouldn't go on walks or be in large groups of other dogs even if on a leash because you can't control other people's dogs coming up to yours. We had a highly animal aggressive one for several years and tried really hard to socialize her. We eventually couldn't take her out anymore because it became too much work because of other irresponsible pet owners would have their dogs off a leash and they'd come over to play. I would literally have to pick her up off the ground and hold her while I kick the other dog just to keep her from tearing the other one apart. We eventually had to put her down because my wife decided to take her to the store one day in her car. They hit a stop sign and the window was down half way. She saw another little dog in the front yard of a neighbor's house, jumped out and killed the dog in about 30 seconds. It took about 6 months worth of lawyers, thousands of dollars and having to put her down to get it resolved. This is what I mean when they require "extra responsibilities".' If your g/f is the type that wants to take your dog to the park to run around this is a bad choice of breed. The best place for one is in your house or in a fenced yard. Even a fenced yard can be dangerous because of other dogs coming up to the fence. I've seen these dogs plow through vinyl fences to get out. Some aren't this way but there is no real way to know.

Questions:
I didn't think you could have bully breeds in Canada?
Do you have a fenced yard?
Are you going to get him/her fixed?
